About this cottage rental
The private Beggs-Bishop Cottage is located on a residential street in one of Mendocino's historic neighborhoods. It's an easy walk to restaurants, live theater, shops, the Art Center, markets and the headlands. You can simply park your car and enjoy village life on foot or bike as we do.
The Beggs House, our home, and the Beggs-Bishop Cottage are hidden behind a 6 foot hedge which insures privacy in the garden or on your porch. The front of the Cottage faces West and the view outside the Cottage gate is Heider Field, a square block of open space land, part of the Headlands State Park. Bordering the north of the Field on Little Lake Street are the four "mansions" as the locals call them, the Packard House, Maxwell Jarvis House, Albert Brown House, and The Blair House which some of you may recognize as Jessica Fletcher's house on "Murder She Wrote." The Beggs House, like the mansions, is classified in the National Historic Register as a Category 1 Structure which means there have only been minor alterations to the original 1881 structure. As historic structures, there are some features of the grounds and buildings that are not ADA compliant: such as narrow sidewalks, steps, etc. We have an interesting history of the house and some of its residents in the Cottage for your reading enjoyment.
THE BEDROOM - Morning sunlight flows into the bedroom through the easterly facing windows. The beautiful antique wardrobe provides ample space for storing your belongings. The window that can be seen in the short hallway outside your bedroom looks out onto your porch and garden. The bed itself is queen size and pleasantly firm with down comforter and Irish wool blanket to keep you cozy and warm. Each side of the bed has a nightstand and reading light.
THE KITCHEN - The Cottage includes a complete kitchen: full size stove and oven, apartment size refrigerator, coffee maker, ample cooking utensils, pots and pans, tableware and all the usual things you need in a kitchen. If we've overlooked something you need, let us know and we'll do our best to rustle it up for you.
THE SITTING AREA - The sitting area can be considered an extension of the kitchen. Heat is provided by a gas powered heater in the style of a wood stove. Cuddle up in the easy chairs and prop your feet up on a foot stool. You'll be comfortable reading a book, visiting with the cook, or taking a cat nap. Or simply daydream while viewing the garden from the multi-pane window. A radio and CD player are provided if you'd like a little mood music. There is no TV service on the property. There is a DVD player and a selection of DVDs. Also high-speed internet service. If you forgot your vacation reading -- not to worry. The Cottage has a great collection of books including the history of Mendocino and surrounding areas. The Cottage is decorated with art by local folks in various media. Local and European photographs by John Uhlar, drawing by Chuck Hathaway, copper work by Mike Moreland, watercolor by Erin Deither, a Patty Walker print, weaving by Betty Lette, ... For the weather buff, there's a barometer and wind speed instrument.
THE BATHROOM - The tile shower, glass door and flowered ceramic sink by local artist Steve Larkin make this a pleasant room to perform your daily toiletries. An electric wall heater helps to dissipate the moisture and the window which opens lets you listen to the local birds: robins, geese, ducks, osprey, gulls, ravens, and . . .
STARTER KIT - Upon your arrival the refrigerator and kitchen table are stocked with a "starter kit." It varies, but can include: yogurt, juice, soft drinks, fruit, fresh breads, and chocolate treat. We always have fresh ground french roast coffee in the cupboard, sugar, milk, black and herbal teas, fresh cut flowers in the kitchen and bedroom.
Ah! The Porch. When the sun is out, it's the best weather in town. The porch faces west and the hedge blocks any wind and insures privacy. Pick a wicker chair, settee, double rocker or adirondack chair, get a glass of wine or iced tea, relax and enjoy the garden.

This property is darling. The loving attention to detail and the care put into its cohesive blue and yellow (and chickens!) design throughout, gives it a homey touch.
The owners were warm and welcoming, offering many suggestions of where to eat and where to go.
The fresh flowers on the table and the beautiful garden, made me want to stay right there and not wander off. I'd definitely stay again.

Cozy, convenient, and clean, plus a lovely garden and lot of personal touches that set it apart from rentals managed by third parties. We're looking forard to becoming regualrs!

I’ve been coming to Mendocino for 25 years — sometimes with kids, sometimes with my spouse, and sometimes on my own. This is the nicest place I’ve stayed at. I initially booked it for myself, but then my husband decided to join me. I was worried from the pictures that it might be too cramped for 2 people, but that was not at all the case. There is a nice comfortable indoor sitting space for 2, in addition to the kitchen table/chairs. And of course the garden space is amazing. But even on a rainy day, we were very comfortable and happy indoors. The kitchen gear was well-stocked. Mike and Kathleen are lovely kind hosts. We hope to come again!

We were very pleased with Mike and Kathleen's cottage. The cottage is located in a lovely enclosed garden, and has a southern or southwest exposure. Thus, the cottage has lots of sunlight and a very charming outlook to the garden. Everything necessary for a satisfactory stay is provided: a comfortable bed with beautiful linens; a good shower; a functional kitchen and two comfortable armchairs with good reading lights. Everything was immaculate and in good condition.
We loved the location of the cottage in the heart of the village. We never used our car during our entire three night stay. That was wonderful. Mendocino Village has many good restaurants. It was a joy to be able to walk to and fro to an excellent meal in the evening.
On top of all this, we found Mike and Kathleen to be warm and friendly hosts. Their long residence in their historic Mendocino home has provided them with a deep knowledge of the area which we found very interesting. Highly recommend a stay in this charming cottage!

First off Mike was great at giving us a heads up about what to expect weatherwise and with details about the cottage. When we arrived Mike and Kathleen greeted us and introduced us to the cottage. They have all the little details covered so you can move right in and be comfortable. we had a great relaxing time. Right in the heart of Mendocino so easy to walk to everything. We really enjoyed the cottage and chatting with the hosts, though they didn't hover around. They were gracious in giving us our space. Definitely want to come back.

Kathleen and Mike are warm, gracious, attentive and charming hosts that maintain a beautiful cottage that was perfect for our memorable stay in Mendocino. A short walk from the restaurants, the community theatre and the music festival, it made for a memorable stay. This was a delightful midweek stay (three nights) for our 50th anniversary. The owners’ attention to detail means this historic property was charmingly old-fashioned, bright and clean, and heartwarmingly romantic for us. It was very quiet, with a private little garden area, and set in the middle of Mendocino. Thank you Michael and Kathleen!

My partner and I were doing a coastal work remote road trip for a few weeks. We heard wifi in Mendocino was iffy but the wifi was great in the cottage even when we were both on video calls at the same time. And of course as everyone has said, the hosts are truly lovely and provide a wonderful bespoke experience. The space is also supremely central so you can just walk everywhere.

If you want to get to know the town of Mendocino, walk the headlands west of town, and inhabit a snug, attractive cottage with the best landlords in America, this is the place. Mike and Kathleen know the village and its history intimately, are attentive to requests, and possess limitless good humor. The place is tiny, suitable for one or two, but the location could not be better, and I spent three happy weeks there without a car.

I have stayed in this sweet cottage twice now, and will stay again the next time I am in Mendocino. It is quiet and comfortable and spic-and-span clean. The kitchen is stocked with everything you might want and hosts Mike and Kathleen are warm and welcoming. Though it is located right in the heart of the village, it is tucked away in its beautiful garden, where you feel cozy and private. Several friends who visited me while I was staying there said, "I could live here!"
