About this house rental
*Please Read negative reviews first, this is a unique OLD house and location, and it's not suitable for everyone. If you have a tendency to need perfection, not read entry instructions, or want a quiet location, this is not the property for you.
The SeaWitch is 61 years old this year, and there is a chance, despite monthly treatment by Professional One Pest Control, bait and sprays, that a roach might find it's way in again - we had one incident last year I do NOT want to repeat. I don't want to ruin anyone's vacation, so please do not book if you or a family member has an issue with this possibility.
Dee takes a great deal of pride in keeping the house clean, but if food is left out, ants are also a possibility.
All future guest contact is being handled by Delores Woodard (Dee) my housekeeper. Her number will be at the top of the entry information which you will receive after the rental agreement is returned.
Short Description: 1960s cottage restored and improved in 2015 with new HVAC, new TVs, new Stainless Steel Appliances including induction range, quiet dishwasher; new beds & flooring, very dog friendly (we do accept multiple dogs) with 4' high welded wire COMPLETELY fenced yard, right on beach road, close to everything, 75 yards to beach access, NOT a quiet location due to beach road traffic! Sun-Sun changeover during summer season, check in any day with 2 or 3 day minimum during the offseason.
Full Description (please read before asking questions!):
*THERE WILL BE NO OCCUPANT ON GROUND FLOOR, JUST STORAGE*
The SeaWitch is meant for those looking for a classic, slightly worn cottage with modern conveniences - central A/C, stainless appliances, Dish Network DVR system with 65" TV, and reliable DSL WiFi. There are 3 bedrooms, the "Yellow" room with a soft foam king bed, the "Blue" room queen firm foam "Tempur-pedic" bed, and the "Green" room has 2 foam mattress twins. The bathroom has a tiled shower / tub, cabinet style vanity, and lots of hooks to make sharing easy. There is also a nice large outside shower, completely rebuilt and repainted with new controls and showerhead.
The house is very dog friendly - large yard completely contained with 4' wire fence (generally dog proof so far, but I'm sure a determined dog could dig out) with attached to wood fencing; we have fencing around the kitchen stairs so dogs can be let into the yard without having to go outside.
The beach access is located on the Kill Devil Hills / Nags Head town line, which means the rules are different if you go left or right at access - Nags Head allows dogs on leashes year round but KDH restricts dogs on beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day between 9am and 6pm. So, you basically have to turn right at the access to go into Nags Head during the summer.
Kitchen features an "Induction" range, and is fully equipped for fairly involved cooking with quality cookware, dutch ovens, pots, pans, sharp knives, roast pan, etc.
50 year old milled wood T&G walls in the great room would have some great stories to tell, some you can see just by looking at the scars. LVT floor throughout the entire house. A 3 ton central A/C.
We will only rent to adults over 25 and families, with families much preferred... sorry kids, no beach weeks.
Cleaning fee includes sheets and bath towels for each bedroom (enough for 6 people), dogs add a single $50 fee (paid to Dee for the extra sand and fur) for as many dogs as you want. You will need to bring your own beach towels.
When you exit the cottage driveway turn right to head towards 8th street that is an easy 1 minute walk to direct public access on the left (ocean side) and a boardwalk to the beach.
Under the porch there is plenty of space to store your fishing rods and beach accessories. There is a large outside shower as well.
Washer and dryer in utility room on ground level.
Beach Items: There are at least two chairs, coolers, a heavy duty beach umbrella like you get from the rental places, a fat tire beach cart, and some other odds and ends in the utility room.

We had a great weekend with our family at The Seawitch. Just know that this house is pet friendly so there are aspects that you can’t coverup as a result. We are dog lovers (though we didn’t bring any with us) so we weren’t bothered by those things. Great location central to everything and excellent communication with property manager. She even gave us a letter check out upon request!

I can’t say enough good things! I don’t often get to vacation with my kids, but OBX has been on my bucket list for a few years. This house exceeded expectations. So clean and organized and well-stocked! Dee was immediately available and texted back with answers to any questions we had. At the end of our trip, no one wanted to leave…especially the dog who was overjoyed with her fenced-in yard and deck.
We walked to the beach daily, took an excursion to southern points on OBX, saw the Wright Bros monument, ate out, ate in, picnicked, and it was all incredible from gorgeous sunrise to even more gorgeous sunset. The location is perfectly situated for any and all activities you could want to do. The only thing we needed was MORE TIME to do more things! We’ll be back for sure.

We initially booked this house for its willingness to allow dogs. Unfortunately, about a month from our visit, our dog passed away. I explained the situation and the host was understanding and refunded our pet deposit. The location is prime for most visitors. It is a very central location with easy beach access and is close to a variety of places around town. The house was clean, we had no issues with any type of bugs or pests, the host was responsive and accommodating and it provided a lovely visit. My fiancé and I actually got married during this visit and the house brought with it a certain type of beach charm that only others of its era could. Lawn care showed up mid-week and mowed/trimmed the lawn. Pest care also showed up mid-week. The only bit of constructive feedback I could provide is this: I had left one morning to pick up Duck Donuts for breakfast. While I was away, Pest Control showed up shortly after I had left. The worker opened the door to the house and said "hello" which startled my wife as she knew it was not me and she was still in bed. I would suggest that if Pest Control is on a known schedule, it be made known to those renting the house so they are aware of the day/timeframe someone might be showing up. Even if someone were not home, it would be nice to have that knowledge so we could secure any items of value, etc. The price point on this rental for a week is spot on at ~$2,000. I hope the owners decide to keep the home right in that range. Will return!

My husband and I stayed with our three grandchildren for four nights at the Sea Witch. We loved the location and it suited us well. Had everything we needed and the yard was great for our dog. Beds were comfortable, plenty of space for everyone. Host was very nice and accommodating.

We stayed August 2023. It was perfect for us and our 3 dogs. The yard was great for our dogs; easy to let them out to run around. There was enough room for us inside to eat dinner as a family when we didnt want to go out and sit around and watch TV for when we were there. We spent the majority of our time at the beach which was only about a 5 minute walk if that. We did use the provided wagon and umbrella. It is a 2 wheel wagon with beach wheels (more like a wheel barrow) but it got through the sand very easily. It is not super fancy if that is what you are looking for, but it is not run down by any means. The owner was very easy to communicate with. The only thing I will say is that all of the reviews saying the beds were comfy must have different mattress tastes than us because we thought they were too hard.

Myself, 3 friends, and 5 dogs had the pleasure of staying in this charming cabin within a few minutes walk from the beach. Our stay was short but enjoyable. There are plenty of restaurants and shops near by. Also a Publix, Harris Teeter and Target within a 10 minute drive. The house is fully stocked with cooking utensils and cleaning supplies. Dogs loved the spacious yard. We will 100% be booking this place again in the future.

Loved the rustic retro style just a short walk from the beach. The beds were VERY comfortable and the house VERY clean. The fenced in backyard for our Golden made his stay cozy. It was like a home away from home. The covered porch with large table was perfect for our morning coffee and the sundeck was nice when not at the beach. Loved this property. It made for a great relaxing stay in one of our favorite beach towns.

This property was perfect for us. Pet friendly, super close to the beach and restaurants, comfortable temperature. Beach items were provided, and that helped tremendously when packing the car. Would definitely stay again!

Perfect little spot in a great location for myself and my three sons. Right in the middle of everything, walking distance to ice cream, restaurants, and most importantly, the beach.
Will absolutely book again next year.

We had a wonderful stay @ the "Sea Witch". It was great to finally be able to take our rottweillers to OBX! Upon entry the property was neat, clean and clearly catered to dogs. Extra water bowls under the sink cabinet and large fenced yard! The deck also has a gate, so the girls were able to hang out in the evenings with us unleashed. Management was informative and friendly. We visit OBX annually and hope The Sea Witch is available for our next trip so our puppers can continue to be part of our Outer Banks adventures!

The house was exactly as the listing described. And it was great. Could not ask for much better distance to the beach access. Central OBX for restaurants, shops, etc. Several of which were walking distance. The backyard was perfect for the dogs. Kitchen equipment and supplies were good. Dee was super responsive. We will be back.

Ideal location, central to all that there is to do in the OBX! We lived in the area for a decade but recently moved a couple hours southwest. Family was getting married so we needed a place to stay for a few days- this was perfect. Property just as described and perfect for my small family and our dog! Check in and out simple as can be! Has everything you need and then some!
When we return, we will rent this house again!

We loved staying here. We have never taken our beagle on vacation with us until now! The cottage is exactly as described and even better once you arrive. Our home doesn't have a yard so we enjoyed watching her run around like crazy enjoying more space than she ever had. We found out our dog absolutely loves the beach! We will be back again someday.

It's wonderful that John has opened his vacation home to families with dogs. As noted in the description, it's not the Ritz but a rustic haven for our four-footed family members and there humans.
Do patrol the spacious fenced in yard on the lookout for sandspurs (didn't find one) and prickly pear (one little cluster about ¾ the way down the north fence). Actually, I found it on our last call before heading out, so I could only dispose of what I could pull up with my fingers. Take a knife, wear gloves, and have a box of bag!
I'm pretty sure we'll be back. Oh, there's an ocean a 5-iron shot across the street via the beach access! Noice!!

This cottage is absolutely perfect if you're traveling with you dog. The large fenced in yard was awesome! The cottage had everything we needed! The property manager, Dee, even text us after our arrival to make sure we had everything we would need and told us to contact her if we had any needs at all. We will be staying here again! Short walk to the beach and centrally located to all kinds of great places to eat and have a drink!

Great location for families with dogs. We loved the easy and quick access to the beach. Located close by the Wright Brothers museum, restaurants and the aquarium. Despite it being located near a road and motel, it was very quiet inside the house.

The Sea Witch is a cozy little slice of heaven.
Loved this place! The backyard was a large part of why I chose this place and I’m so glad I did. The location cannot be beat- the close proximity to the beach access, Harris Teeter and Ben Franklin is fantastic. The house is, as I mentioned, very cozy and the kitchen is extremely well stocked with cookware. The bedrooms are well appointed and the mattresses all seemed to be very comfy (no complaints from the other guests.) My pups Nova and Luna HIGHLY enjoyed the backyard and watching all the people walking to and from the beach access.
I also didn’t have any internet issues while working remotely from this place. My work VPN had no issues holding a connection and I was able to have online meetings with absolutely no issues. Casting YouTube from my phone was also flawless (after the usual initial buffering).
Everything was very clean and it appeared that a new shower curtain and liner were added recently which was a nice touch. It was very nice to stay in a home that had character and I could hear the waves breaking on the shore from.
Host communication was also fantastic. Dee and John were extremely responsive and communicating with them was a joy.
I rate this place a 10/10 and I hope to stay again soon!

Of all the years we have been coming to the Outer Banks, this is one of our very favorite places to stay and bring the pups. I've mentioned this before in a review and even though it's not the fanciest, most luxurious property, it's clean, inviting, and in a perfect location. There is a great deck to sit on and enjoy the weather, listen to the waves, and watch what's happening along the beach road.
Considering it's across the street from the ocean, it's in pretty good condition overall. Communication with Dee and John is very easy and they are always available if we have any questions. This is the first place we check for availability when we come for our quarterly visits. Can't wait to be back!

We loved the home and fenced in yard for our pups!
2.0 / 10.0
Place smells like dirty wet dogs. There are roaches in and around the kitchen. Expired food in the pantry. Linens were dirty.
Dog feces all over the yard.
The “storage” area on the lower level of the house, makes the house feel odd and shady… Needless to say, we will never stay in this property nor will we recommend it.

Fabulous location, great for dogs and Dee was a dream to work with!
10.0 / 10.0
This is our second time staying here and we loved it more this time. House is perfect size for our little family great location. The fenced in yard is a dream for traveling with our 5 fur babies. Dee is an amazing person and super with communication if she is needed. But you wont need her because EVERYTHING is there for you! Yes its older and if your looking for a fancy modern place this isnt your place. But its our place and we have made memories to last a lifetime.
10.0 / 10.0
John and Dee were very communicative and answered our questions in a timely manner. This location is close to everything and minutes walk to the beach. Our pup loved the fenced in yard and being able to roam freely. We went during off season so it was a little chilly to stay at the beach too long, but there was so much else to do in the neighborhood!
10.0 / 10.0
My wife and I visit the OBX 3-4 times per year and have stayed in a lot of different rentals. This was one of our favorite places we've ever stayed. It's not necessarily the fanciest or most updated but the location is perfect, the place is clean and well stocked and the communication with the owner was excellent. We can't wait to go back and will be looking this property up first when we do go. Thank you!!

We loved our time at this classic OBX beach house. Walking distance to the beach and all kinds of great restaurants. I have been coming to the Outer Banks since the mid 90s and this was one of my best trips yet. Thanks to John and Dee for a great stay. We will be back!

We had a wonderful time. The house was just as it was described, Great locations . We were close to the beach and piers. My husband is a fisherman, so that was our goal. The house was clean and having the washer and dryer made our travel home so much nicer, knowing we did not have to go home and start on laundry. We even left a gift for the house, we bought a little stand sitter, with Mermaid's tears written on it. LOL

We had an anniversary trip for 2 couples. The kitchen was so well stocked, it made cooking a pleasure.
The dogs very much appreciated the large and well maintained yard.
It was perfect, we would stay here again for sure.

Had a great stay! Been coming to the OBX for 20 years and stayed in a variety of places. This was one of my favorites. Location is prime, scenes from all sides of the patio outside. Lots of character and well thought out layout. Was my sons first beach trip and we could not have been more pleased with the ease of access to the beach. House maid was able to get us in 2 hours early and texted letting me know it was ready to go! Very responsive for questions as well. WILL Stay here again.
Side note for owner. Hose outside on side was clipped by whoever mows the lawn. I had 5 gallon buckets and had access to water to clean sand off but just an FYI.
Thanks again!

House was lovely and the owner was super helpful. They even checked on my dog when her tracker glitched while we were in Corolla
6.0 / 10.0
The property manager is very nice and takes pride in the house. Location is great (walk to restaurants) and they had everything you could think of in the house. I enjoyed sitting on the lounger chairs at night and people/car watching. Beach cart was very handy! I only saw one small bug, I see more at my own house.
Now the not so good. I live in a house built in 1927, I know old. But this house felt a bit neglected. Parts of the ceiling are cracking/peeling off, there’s exposed drywall in the hall. The dog blankets for couches smelled like, well, dog, and we’re thrown in a pile in the closet floor. I also think the house needs a deep clean every month or so. There’s a lot of deep dust, floors need a good mopping, dirty window sills and the patio is full of hair pet clumps and lots of sand under the covered area. The railings on the patio are quite loose and wobble. If I had really young kids I wouldn’t have let them out there.
I wish the backyard was in better shape. The stairs to the back had a lot of small trash and debris in the path. I didn’t feel safe having my kids go down there, and barely my dogs, had to pick up a lot of small trash (like metal shavings??) from the path. This wasn’t trash from litter. More like home things that were just strewn into the yard.
Not sure we’d go back, but kids had fun!
