About this house rental
Twenty nine miles from Kilauea with a view of Mauna Kea on clear mornings and the Pacific Ocean visible across the street. You will hear the ocean, birds and frogs. We are located in a residential area with street noise in the daytime from people visiting the popular neighborhood beach parks.
We share our clean and comfortable home for you to enjoy your trip to Hilo and the Big Island. We offer the vacation home experience you are seeking. The house was originally built in 1936, over 20 years before Hawaii became a member of the United States.
We have installed AC in the living room in May 2022. One of the bedrooms still has a window AC for those who need a little bit more. Opening the many windows and enjoying the fresh ocean breeze satisfies most guests. Our home was originally built a long time ago but it is modern while maintaining the character of a traditional Hawaii beach home. You will see geckos on the property and see the ocean horizon and birds from our picture windows. We almost always see sea turtles at the nearby beaches. It's best to drive to the beach first to ensure you are comfortable with the walk, especially if you have children with you.
We offer 2 bedrooms and 2 baths with an office/library in our ocean view home with great snorkeling beach access. The beaches usually have calm waters, excellent snorkeling conditions, shade, tide pools and green sea turtles and are all just across the street with a short walk. We are a short drive to water falls, botanical gardens, Volcano Park, restaurants and shopping.

This was a great house to stay at as a base camp for exploring Hilo! Our family of 4 was very comfortable and the proximity to nice beaches (with excellent turtle watching) was wonderful. Having a covered parking spot was nice as it was raining when we were leaving- but everything stayed dry. Thanks for a great stay!

We had a great time basing our Hilo adventures out of this Hawaii Beach House. It is located along a strip of beaches that are among the very best beaches to visit in Hilo area. There was a decent view of the ocean looking out the front windows that added to the atmosphere. The view was out over the beautiful volcanic rock wall, the ~25 mph road, and across-the-street neighbor's property. The kitchen was probably one of the best stocked VRBO properties so we were never left struggling to cook with minimal utensils, dishes, pans, and appliances like we have in the past. I had read some complaints about the noise that the frogs made but it was a non-issue for us since we are used to a lot of wildlife noises from many years camping. I would say that the noise of the frogs was low and what we could hear was enjoyable and helped put us to sleep. Not to mention all the fresh air and activities throughout the day also put us right to sleep. The master bedroom bed was very comfortable and the entire atmosphere was relaxing and restful. Highly recommended!

We wanted to see the east side of the island and have time to explore easily. And we were looking for a homelike setting to relax in after exploring during the day. This house delivered! Nice house, great view out the front window and easy to reach, quiet location. Even the air conditioning worked well! A very pleasant stay!!

Beautiful location. House was bigger than expected, and exceeded expectations overall. Beautiful views of ocean from living room and kitchen. Well equipped with cooking supplies, towels, etc. Only thing missing was a grill. My mattress could have benefitted from a topper, but master BR bed and bathroom were really nice. We really enjoyed our stay here and would stay again!

This is a beautiful, traditional Hawaiian beach home located on a large private lot, with easy sheltered parking. It is wood panelled throughout, painted in warm tones. It's very airy, with lots of large windows, ceilingings over 9 feet high, and an overhead fan in each room. The aesthetic is uncluttered and peaceful. There are architectural details everywhere, on the walls, ceilings, and tiled bathrooms, making it a very pleasant space just to be in. The kitchen is large, and a pleasure to cook in.

The house is charming and so comfortable. Just wish we had longer to stay. We used it as our hub for Volcanoe Park. Carlsbad Beach just a short walk away is amazing. Thanks

Marin and Scott have a charming and lovely home, which was very well supplied. The location was wonderful, and their guest book had great information and suggestions for our stay on the Big Island. Communication with hosts was easy, and we would love to return!

This is a very comfortable house, well-equipped kitchen, roomy living room and bedrooms, and very private yard. It’s close to 3 waterfront parks so every day we would choose a different one to visit. Not a lot of sandy beaches, but beautiful parks nonetheless, with lots of sea turtles close to shore. House is very convenient to downtown Hilo (a couple miles) and close to the airport. We loved it here! (And don’t miss the malasadas at Munchi Box—best we’ve ever had!)

This is an old, very charming, very comfortable house near the beaches in Hilo. We loved our stay there. It was great for two people but would be equally great for a family or a group of friends. I gave it four stars for accuracy of listing because there was no coffee grinder and we had brought beans. So we bought a grinder and left it at the house.

We had such a wonderful time at Merin's property! It is a fantastic location close to great beaches and snorkeling, and the property was quaint and well cared for. My family & I were comfortable, beds were cozy, and we loved the vibe of the place. Highly recommend this property to get more of a locals perspective of Hilo.

As the title suggests, this is our second time in this home. They’ve added more air conditioning and remodeled a bathroom since the last time. The A/C is fantastic and we were comfortable the whole time. Also plenty of windows to open and enjoy a nice breeze through the house. The home is a classic Hilo home. Lots of built in cabinets, and gorgeous woodwork. Everything was clean and we didn’t see a single ant or bug. That’s impressive because both are quite common in Hilo. Highly recommend staying here when in Hilo.

We'd choose this place again.

Lovely home! Very comfortable and very clean. Quiet neighborhood. Great location close to the beaches and 10 minutes from downtown or airport. Easy to get around Hilo and all the areas on the windward side, including Volcano NP. Be sure to find the black notebook right away that has good information to help get started getting accustomed to the house.

The house is well equipped and very comfortable.
It might have been helpful in the communication to mention that the large front gate is unlocked and slides sideways to open.

This was a lovely house for visiting Hilo for a few days. It's a lovely well maintained home from the 1930s with nice woodwork and tile work. It also has a basic, but updated kitchen and baths, ceiling fans, as well as AC. We didn't need the AC at all, as a there is a lovely sea breeze. There is a peek-a-boo view of the water across the street from the kitchen and living room, and a lush garden surrounding the home.
The location was excellent for short walks (or drives) to beaches, exploring Hilo or other sights on the east side, like the botanical garden.
Our group of adults enjoyed walking to the water front parks, and we saw turtles every visit in Feb. We swam and saw people snorkeling. Most of the parks were lava rock and had protected shallow areas for swimming, even on windy days. Many had picnic shelters and bathrooms too.
Driving back to Hilo for groceries, shopping or restaurants was a short easy drive or about 10 mins.
As the description says, there is a little bit of road noise during the day because people are driving to the various parks on the road, however, the rock wall and gate do a great job minimizing it, so we were pleased how quiet and peaceful it was.
The Hilo side is so lush. Yes, it rains, but you can't have a green tropical wonderland without the rain. We found that the rain doesn't last long and it's warm...and it's still Hawaii!
We would totally rent here again when exploring the green side of the Big Island.

Property is well taken care of and in a great location. Easy access to lots of local culture and sites. Nice, quiet location within walking distance to beaches. House had plenty of room and great layout to accommodate everyone comfortably. Kitchen is big and has plenty of cooking appliances and utensils. We enjoyed relaxing at house and had easy access to downtown HIlo, short drive to Botanical Gardens and waterfalls. Able to do a day trip to Hawaii Volcano National Park and Southeast part of island. Kilauea was erupting so we had dinner at park and went back after dark. Spectacular!
We opted for an overnight trip to Kona area but could easily have driven back to Hilo on Daniel Inouye Highway if we wanted to just do a day trip.
Merin and Scott communicated promptly about any questions we had. Check in and out was seamless. Easy to get to and from house using ride share from Airport. Wonderful experience at house and in Hilo and other parts of island.

We had the most wonderful time staying here. Within easy walk of stunning ocean pools where turtles and fish hung out with us. Close to downtown Hilo but has a relaxed seaside vibe. With family meeting half way between Sydney and New York for a long anticipated reunion this was the perfect place for our Christmas holiday.

Stunning view of ocean from the front window. Love the nighttime symphony of frogs.

The house is beautifully decorated, comfortable and clean. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and the hosts leave available any condiments others have left behind. I mean, you want ketchup and mustard but who wants to buy that for a 3 day stay. Five minute walk to the water. The hosts were super responsive to every question.

House was wonderful across the street from the ocean. Good view of ocean. Quiet neighborhood. Two public beaches were very close. We saw turtles almost every day.

My fiancé and I had the most incredible time staying at this property. The house itself was beautiful and very well stocked with all of the essentials and then some! Having access to snorkeling gear, surf boards, and a cooler greatly enhanced our trip and added to our many fond memories of Hilo. We were also very pleasantly surprised at how close the house was to a few stunningly beautiful beaches. The free bus that runs into town and to the airport has part of its route past the house, making it incredibly easy for us to get to the house our first night before we got our rental car. We would absolutely stay here again, given the opportunity.

This is a very nice, roomy, well-furnished house in what appears to be a nice area of Hilo. Appliances are top of the line and the property has a lot of character. Due to the nature of the individual cooling units in only two rooms of the house, there isn't a consistent temperature throughout the house, but this appears to be the norm in Hawaii. We had an issue at check in, as none of the codes provided worked in accessing the house key, but we received a prompt response after texting the property owners.

While this house may be old, it’s hard to tell since it has been remodeled with impeccable taste and amazing quality. It’s so refreshing to see something restored so well. The location is also perfect. I can’t wait to return.

Really feels like home!
Wonderful kitchen which is so important for us as we love to cook. The pack-n-play was great for our infant (had a changing table part too!). Loved that we could shut the main gate and our four year-old could romp about with his visiting cousins and we didn’t have to worry!! Great location close to Onekahakaha for the keiki and our favorite beach of Richardson’s. We would love to come back again some day!!
