Estrella is a beautiful oasis near the hustle and bustle of Quito. Great garden , nice digs, safe place (inside the gates), stylish. The owners are totally responsive and helpful.Would like to give it 5 stars, but there was a parking lot directly out our bedroom window with car alarms that go off until about 2 am every night. Its DIRECTLY out the window of the unit we stayed in. It isnt the owners fault , and Quito is a loud-ish city where it is hard to get silence, but car alarms dont lend to good sleep . There was no ventilation in the bedroom, and since you cant open the window (it would be even louder), it got stuffy. Im sure if we would have mentioned this to the owners , they would have gotten us a fan, but we didnt get around to it.The other thing we werent thrilled with was that we were told the neighborhood isnt safe to walk around in at night. So you can feel a little trapped come dark. It actually seemed fine, with kids and families around, and we did walk back from La Ronda at night, so its up to the travelers comfort level. Again, this isnt the owners fault, and its always a good idea to caution people, but just be aware, it is not a bustling main street in the heart of Quito. (FYI on those bustling streets, which are awesome, there is still crime. I did have someone try to get into my backpack right in the heart of the city as I walked, but I had it so you could not get into it). I would not book away from Estrella, again, the garden is really a haven (birds!), and it is peaceful, but you should also know the whole of it. Luxury hotels in the heart of the city are expensive now, and this is more affordable, so it does fill a nice niche. Quito is a great city, enjoy it!

3 1/2-stars- great place, really liked it, but noisy and couldn't stroll at night

Absolutely stunning, in every way!
This sweet property was an incredible find ... and the hosts are just lovely. We've used VRBO to rent apartments across the globe, and this was one of our absolute favorites. Could not have been any better. Highly recommend this property!

Lovely Estrella in Colonial Quito
Comfortable and well equipped one bedroom suite. Separate dining room overlooking the beautiful garden was a real treat to sit in. Great view up the hill to the Virgin of Quito statue. Wolfgang and Andi were very accommodating, easygoing, and friendly. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back in the future.

We loved to live in the historic part of Quito. Wonderful garden for retreat. Excellent equipment of the house and lovely architecture in and out. Very friendly staff and most helpful owners with suggestions and recommendations. We can recommend the driver Marcelo who lives next door.

Perfect Place to Stay in Historic Quito
My husband and I stayed in the beautiful Wantara Suites for 10 days during September. The apartment is comfortable, beautifully decorated, and roomy. It had everything we needed to make our stay wonderful. The decor of the apartment is tasteful and the kitchen is well-stocked for everything you need to prepare a meal. There is even an outdoor barbecue area. The bathroom is roomy with a large shower and plenty of hot water. We especially enjoyed the little wood-burning stove complete with kindling and firewood. We used it several nights when the temperatures dipped into the mid 40s. The apartment is easy walking distance to the Plaza Grande and many other historical sites and restaurants in the area. If you prefer to take a taxi, the taxis come by frequently on a main street a half block away. There are also little food stores in the area that sell many items to prepare meals and a great bakery only a half block away. The apartment felt safe because of the locking gated doors around the complex. The apartment was spotlessly clean when we arrived and the cleaning staff kept it that way with twice a week cleaning. The gardens are spectacular -- many flowers and flowering shrubs and trees and plenty of birds to watch as you sit on the beautiful balcony. Wolfgang recommended several tour agencies and also recommended hiring Marcelo as a guide. We booked four all day tours with Marcelo and were very happy with his services. He also picked us up at the airport and took us back on our day of departure. He is a safe driver and always on time (early on most days) and he gave us plenty of time to explore locations on our own while he waited in the car. If we ever get the opportunity to visit Quito again, we will only stay at Wantara Suites.

Secret Garden
The Wantara Garden Suites is truly a secret garden hidden in the midst of busy streets of historic Quito. Its owners Annemarie and Wolfgang created a place where comfortable apartments are complemented by the beauty and tranquility of the outdoor space full of native flowers, herbs, climbing shrubs, and hummingbirds.
The Estrella Suite we stayed in is charming and cozy with its adobe walls, tasteful decor, well equipped kitchen and a second floor bedroom overlooking the statue of the Winged Madonna. Its proximity to the historic center of Quito makes it easy to explore it on foot and take nightly strolls on and around LaRonda. Just step outside of Wantara gates and you find a corner store and a bakery for all your eat-in needs. Additionally apartments are supplied with current tourist brochures, important phone numbers, books and movies for your convenience and entertainment.
Annemarie and Wolfgang are the most gracious and hospitable people whose warmest welcome makes you quickly feel like at home. Wolfgang is very responsive to your questions and concerns and corresponds with you prior to your arrival via email on timely basis. He generously shares his knowledge of Ecuador and his advice is invaluable.
At our request, Wolfgang provided us with the names of local guides to arrange for transportation in and around Quito. We chose to hire Marcelo, the property manager at Wantara, and never regretted our decision. Marcelo turned out to be a safe and dependable driver, well-informed guide and a lovely travel companion. From city sites to Cotopaxi National Park to Quilotoa Lake, from Otavalo to Mindo Cloud Forest, Marcello gave us a taste of Ecuador and treated us with stories about history and life in his native country. You can find Marcelo through Wantara owners Annemarie or Wolfgang or you can contact him directly at [email protected]
When visiting Quito again, we would always stay at Wantara Suites. We wish you all happy travels!

Tranquil haven in the bustling old city
The place is stunning. Andi and Wolfgang have converted hundred-year-old adobe buildings into comfortable, convenient apartments while preserving as much as possible of the original character. In the centre, the beautiful garden offers a shared green space where you are even invited to make use of the herbs.
The apartments (we were in two) are comfortable, fully equipped, and decorated beautifully. The maid service is excellent, and so is the laundry service: Lucrecia and Maria are very careful to respect your wishes.
Wolfgang made sure to be there to greet us and show us the ropes even though flight times meant we arrived very early, and also seems to take a genuine pleasure in sharing his knowledge of the city so as to ensure you have the best time possible.
In a word, six excellent weeks.

Peaceful and beautiful setting
Andi and Wolfgang are wonderful hosts. We felt very welcome. Our renovated Adobe brick suite was very comfortable and well appointed with separate bathroom bedroom and kitchen/ dining area. The suites situated within a walled garden in the old heritage listed section of Quito, very close to La Ronda Ave, so within walking distance to excellent restaurants and the old city centre. Outdoor furniture allows guests to make best use of the beautiful established garden. Humming birds are regular visitors. A barbecue is ready for use. The units are furnished with very tasteful decor in keeping with the history of the site.
We loved our stay and would highly recommend this little piece of paradise in Quito to anyone wanting to stay in a self-catering unit.

Wonderful place to stay
We really enjoyed our stay here. It is very nice and the property is beautiful. We stayed for a few days at the end of our Ecuador trip and this was a great way to end it. The property felt very safe as there is good security. The location is good if visiting Old Town Quito. The owners were very friendly and informative and helped us booked rides to and from the airport and a day excursion. We would highly recommend this place if visiting Quito.

A Little Paradise
What can I say? All the favourable reviews before ours are accurate. This place is a little oasis within the busy historic district of Quito. My children loved their garden and all the space for them to explore. The rooms were lovely suites with all the comforts of home. We especially enjoyed making our rooms cozy in the evening with their little wood burning fireplaces. The owners are welcoming, helpful and yet unobtrusive. We stayed here at the beginning of our three week trip in Ecuador and at the end. It was by far the best place we stayed in the country.

Stylish and Accommodating in the Old City, Quito, Ecuador
My wife and I enjoyed four days in one of the stylish and attractive, simple studios at Wantara Suites this January. Our panoramic windows provided a view of the Old City and mountains behind it. We regularly took breakfast at the inviting table on our comfortable and private patio, elevated above the attractive gardens of Wantara Suites. The modern and equipped kitchenette served us well for dining both indoors and out. Our queen-sized bed was most comfortable and warm, beneath the elevated and slanted ceiling of stylish beams and whitewashed walls. Splashes of bright color punctuate the walls, enlivening the room even more.
The owner Wolfgang and his wife provide informative and beneficial orientations to living in the Suites and touring Quito and all of Ecuador. They are personable and kind, lived in Ecuador many years, and speak fluent Spanish, English, and German, some French, and who knows what other languages. The rates charged by Wantara Suites are exceptionally reasonable, given their location in the Old City, the size, design, and comfort of the studios, and what one would pay in more commercial facilities.
Wantara Suites are secure and safe in the community. There are small grocery stores very near, and one can easily walk to prominent destinations and transportation hubs in the Old City. Although we stayed only a few days at Wantara, some of our neighbors there resided a month or more in comfort and convenience.

My husband and I spent 7 luxurious nights at Wantara. We arrived late at night to find our refrigerator stocked with delicious breakfast items and the next morning the owners greeted us like family, and spent hours helping us navigate places to visit. We ended up staying in two separate suites because we traveled a bit between stays and both were gorgeous apartments with fully equipped kitchens, tastefully decorated and comfortable with every anmentity we could ever ask for. We stored our bags there at no charge while we traveled and felt safe and secure in and cared for the entire time.
The suites, hidden behind a gated wall, are surrounded by beautiful patios and gardens. Honestly, it was like entering a secret garden paradise, just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of the old city. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay in Quito. Thank you Wolfgang and Andi!!!

You can't do better in Quito
Our family has been back from Quito nearly a month, and still every day one of us finds something about the Estrella Suite or Wantara's gardens to reminisce about aloud---the thoughtful and gourmet inventory of kitchenwares, the little wood stool that doubled as a child's step-up, the spa-like shower, the resident hummingbirds. Wolfgang and Andi have looked after every detail, creating an ideal home away from home. To families traveling with young children, we recommend the indoor and outdoor play spaces at Cumanda, a 5-minute walk; an afternoon at Parque El Ejido, where the high-thrill rides on the playground include an actual zip-line; and pizza from the walk-away window on the Ronda.

Contemporary retreat in historic Quito
Our family of four (2 adults and 2 teen daughters) stayed a week in the Estrella suite. It is well located, within a few minutes walking distance from historic Quito (our favourite area to visit), and inexpensive and efficient taxis and buses will get you anywhere you want to go. The most welcoming hosts are informative, friendly, positive. Wolfgang arranged special transportation for us and made excellent recommendations of restaurants and sightseeing. The apartment was very clean, with a well-stocked fridge for our morning breakfast. The design is modern and clever and the surrounding gardens are most enchanting, especially when one considers it is smack in the middle of a bustling city. We enjoyed aperitifs outside after touring all day and picked fresh herbs from the garden for our evening meals! I highly recommend a stay at Wantara.

exceeded expectations
Our stay at Wantara Suites was a delight. Although, located a bit outside the centro historico it was an easy walk to the major points of interest and, as importantly, offered a quiet respite from the chaos of the centro. Having come from Banos where car alarms and crowing roosters awakened us at odd hours, Wantara was peaceful and largely noise free. Wolfgang was an engaging host at looked after our needs with sincere attention and concern. The suite itself was fully equipped, had plenty of hot water and good internet connectivity. There was even a beer and coffee in the suite at our arrival, something we appeciated after a four hour bus ride from Banos. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

Do Not Miss Staying At Wantara Garden Suites - Quito's Undiscovered Gem
Our family spent three wonderful nights at Wantara Suites. Our suite was perfect for a family of four and had a well-appointed kitchen and beautiful finishes. Wolfgang and Andi were fantastic hosts! Since we arrived late at night, they had thoughtfully provided breakfast for us to make the following morning, recommended their favorite restaurants in La Ronda and arranged transportation to Otavalo for us with their driver. The Wifi is great and our kids really enjoyed relaxing and reading their books in the hammocks on the open air patio. We can't recommend Wantara Suites highly enough.
