About this house rental
"Pathway of the Gods" is the meaning of the name given by ancient Hawaiians to Kealakekua Bay. Five hundred feet from the bay, nestled among the palm trees and fragrant plumeria blossoms is the site of your next vacation. Let us "Big Isle" you!
Hale Hanai is a family-friendly two-story vacation rental home which will give you a taste of old Hawaii, away from the crowds, with a large private yard abounding in fragrant flowers, bananas, and coconuts. 'Hanai' is a word Hawaiians use to designate adopted family. While staying in our home, you are our adopted family.
Upstairs, Mom and Dad can relax and enjoy their own private living room with views of the bay. The Alii (royalty) room is furnished with a California King bamboo canopy bed, a seating area, and a lanai from which to view some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. There is a fully-equipped kitchen and a dining room with a table that seats eight, as well as a china hutch with dishes for that special meal.
Downstairs, there is a separate living room, and room to enjoy a snack. The Sandcastle Sanctuary has a queen-size bed and a built-in daybed, perfect to accommodate Grandma and Grandpa or a married child and spouse. The built-in daybed is wonderful for a younger child, and it also makes a great place to sit and enjoy a book while the ocean breezes rustle the curtains and wash your cares away. There is even a portable crib ready for a napping baby, if needed. The Volcano Room sports a double bed and the decor has been heavily influenced by Madame Pele, the goddess of fire. The Captain Cook Quarters has a twin-size daybed, with aquatic decor for kids who might enjoy "sleeping with the fishes." Two queen-size sleeper sofas (one upstairs, one down) round out the sleeping arrangements.
Across the bay is the historic Captain Cook monument that marks the place where the famous explorer met his untimely end. Spinner Dolphins visit the bay almost daily, and there is unparalleled snorkeling in this marine sanctuary. After a day of sightseeing or kayaking in the bay, the outdoor shower will wash away the sand along with your cares. The barbeque awaits, as you dine outdoors on the two picnic table as the sun sets on another perfect day in paradise.
Please note that we have a two-week minimum policy for bookings during the Christmas holidays, from December 15 to January 1.

We live on the Big Island but on the East side so, when looking for a place to stay we needed it in the Kealakekua Bay area. This was perfect for us, it was large enough for all and special treat for us, it was almost next door to our granddaughter and her family. The wedding venue was at a Equestrian Center very close. There is a park and of course the bay within walking distance. All in all it was a great place.

We loved this VRBO! The surroundings are beautiful. Short walk to Captain Cook Cove for fantastic snorkeling and other great activities. Our kids loved exploring for geckos and other wildlife. The house had everything we needed and was very spacious, which was important for our big family. It was a great place to come home to for rest and relaxation after a day of Hawaii adventures. We had several online interactions with the host and in all of which she was extremely prompt in responding, very helpful, and kind. Thank you for helping make our first Hawaii experience a great one!

Property was very clean. It's up in the hills on a windy road about 15-20 minutes out of town. We liked that it was a bit out of the way but in a nice way. We walked 10-15 minutes a came to a little well known snorkeling spot. It's a private property that allows access. I has a nice outside patio next to beautiful plants. Overall, a very nice place.đź‘Ť

Our family’s stay at Hale Hanai consisted of three generations - grandparents, adult children, and two grandchildren. There was plenty of room for everyone in the two-level home set in a tropical setting very close to Kealakekula Bay.
Everyone enjoyed the stay there. Our host, Susan, was very accommodating and easy to communicate with.

The property was amazing! Both the house and yard were so inviting. Loved the gorgeous landscape and how close we were to the water. The host was wonderful. She knew this was a surprise Christmas gift for our kids and set up a darling Christmas tree inside the home.

Great location, great host, house big enough to give each of us some room.

This house was in a perfect location for a family looking for adventures on the southwestern side of the island. House was 10 minutes from Two Step Beach and the Place of Refuge, and 2 minutes from the main kayak departure point for Captain Cook. We had a mix of generations and families, so having two stories, two family rooms, and a lower kitchenette in addition to the main kitchen was extremely comfortable for everyone. Everyone found their happy place here, including teens, tweens, grandparents, and parents looking for a quiet lanai for a coffee. The toddler was especially happy, with lots of toys, kid books, a crib, booster seat, and a beautiful yard. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

We came as a group of 8 people and it was very enjoyable visit. The house is big and has enough space for everybody. Susan is an excellent host, takes good care of her guests and communication is very easy. I would recommend for anyone who wants to come as a group. Thank you Susan for making our visit so enjoyable!

We had a great time staying here. The house was very nice and clean. It is well stocked with everything you need. Susan was a great host-greeted us with a basket full of yummy treats as well as a basket with toiletries in case we had forgotten anything. We would definitely stay here again.

5 minute walk to the ocean. 10 minute drive to 2-step. 10 minute drive to Capt Cook trailhead. A nice base for vacation. Definitely recommend!

Loved the location, short walk to the bay which was lovely to take our morning coffee to.The kitchen is mostly stocked with what you need to make dinners an a great bbq outside. However lots of spiders an webs an mosquitos, was glad i brought my own coils as the tiki torches were all almost out. Theres alot of space in the house but there's also alot of personal stuff an oversized furniture which makes it very difficult to bring suitcases in an open them up. All of the rooms while decorated nicely have just a few too many things in them. Overall we had a great trip with great memories an can't wait to return.

Susan was an incredible and hospitable! Her home was lovely and well cared for and we very much enjoyed our stay. It was a great spot for my 4 year old daughter as well she enjoyed the toys Susan had pulled out and books as well! We really appreciate being able to stay here and my mom is already looking to go back to the Big Island again and stay!

The house is a 2min walk from the bay, manini beach, and the kayak launch. Perfect place to be!! The home is beautiful and accomodating for family groups. Highly recommend!

Loved this property - the location, just above Manini Beach, was perfect for morning walks. Loved the little fruit stands along the wayl
Susan was very helpful and generous. Our 3-year old grandson loved all the toys. Lots of games and beach equipment. There were 11 of us and we all fit!! Thanks for a wonderful stay, Susan.

Far enough from traffic and bustle to allow relaxation, but close enough to experience all that Hawaii has to offer. Short walk takes you and your coffee to the ocean to watch dolphins.

We loved this rental for our family of four, though we could have doubled our numbers and been comfortable. We like being away from the hustle and bustle of condos and all that, so this was perfect for us. You are a quick walk to a gorgeous bay. Minutes drive to the best snorkeling on the island. An hour-ish drive to other fantastic beaches up and down the coast. The top floor feels like you are in the tree-tops.

Susan was a wonderful host. The house was a great location with a large yard and patio but the road noise can be loud upstairs early in the morning when windows are open. Great place to stay and close to snorkeling.

Loved the location of this house, removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The yard was very natural and we enjoyed experiencing island life (and some of the critters that came along with it). Susan was very welcoming, the house equipped with everything we needed and then some! Appreciated that she put out special toys for the children in our group. Also appreciated that she would accommodate our large group without lots of extra hidden fees like some of the other listings we encountered, greatly appreciated how up front and honest she was! Would definitely rent again!!

The roomy house is located near beautiful Kealakua Bay. The house is cooled by fans, and is delightfuly decorated with a Hawaiian flair. Captain Cook is a wonderful location to stay. Very scenic, but not touristy, and it has just enough access to markets and cafes. The owner was very responsive to our groups' needs. The price was very reasonable.

This was our first of hopefully many family reunions with our children, their spouses and our grandkids! We will always cherish our memories of our stay in this beautiful and comfortable home! WE had everything we needed and more to be comfortable! Susan made sure there were comfy beds for us, plenty of towels, ceiling fans, kitchen necessities to make our stay perfect! Her book of ideas was also very helpful to us!

The house was close to the ocean and very convenient for our large group. The host was very accommodating to our needs. Thank you for a great stay.

Space was great, yard beautiful and location pretty good for daily excursions. Boys fished daily just down the road and they loved that. House was good, definitely enough space for our large group. Glad we had a heads up to be prepared for geckos as roommates and a few other critters, house is in the tropics, so this is to be expected. One disappointment was the broken grill, we were really looking forward to being able to grill outside in the evenings. Appreciated having the washer and dryer for clean towels and washing beach/hiking clothes. Most fans worked and with windows open we were able to manage without AC. House could use a little TLC, but overall very comfortable. I would stay here again.

We rented the whole house for 2 weeks at Christmas for a family Christmas - 8 adults and 2 children. It was great! Susan added so many nice touches - decorated for Christmas, all the towels and linens we could possibly want, cleaning supplies, toys and dvds for the kids, snorkeling gear, etc. It was our home away from home. We loved walking to the bay each morning to swim with the dolphins. Place of Refuge was only 5 miles away - a great place to visit with a beach right there where we snorkeled with big sea turtles and tide pools for the kids to play in. We were within 15 minutes of some great restaurants - Patz Pies, Coffee Shack, Rebel Kitchen, Sun Dried - to name a few. Also, we were within 40 minutes or less of other beaches, the marina to charter fishing trips and more. If you want fancy with air conditioning and pools - this is not for you. But if you want a nice comfy home from which you can plan your daily adventures and come back to relax at, then this home is a great value! I will be recommending Hale Hanai to my friends and family.

This is the perfect, cheerful house for a couple (upper house only) or family or group (entire house) just steps away from beautiful Kealakekua Bay. I've stayed here with friends several times and it has been great each time - I look forward to the next visit! Susan is a warm, helpful and responsive owner. Her house is comfy and well equipped for a sweet, relaxing vacation or retreat. If you want a fancy place with air conditioning, this is not the house for you ... but if you want a home-y place with lovely breezes each morning and evening in one of the most beautiful and convenient locations in south Kona, this place is not only perfect, but an excellent value. Cheers!

We stayed at hale Hanai with our friends for two weeks. We all had the best stay, in this beautiful, spacious, well equipped family home beach house. Everything we needed was there, like our own home away from home! And it's just a minute walk to the awesome bay, which you can access to from three beaches, all beautiful, and just THERE ! No driving, just a nice little stroll WOW! And up the road, a shaved ice and hamburger stand! Susan proved to be a wonderful hostess, greeting us upon our arrival.
Such a lovely stay,we can't wait ito go back, and if you go check out Gios gelato, gotta try it,soo good! Thanks Thom and Susan for a relaxing unforgettable stay for our vacation, you guys, simply the best! Big Big Mana Big big Mahalo Tim and Michele Coxm

Our group of 4 rented the downstairs unit for 1week. We enjoyed the proximity to the Bay for kayaking and snorkeling. Local area hill running was great. Mrs. Curtis was very helpful in getting us set up with the kitchenware requested. The place was clean with plenty of beach and bathing towels. Would stay here again.

My husband and I recently honeymooned here, and we absolutely loved it! The house is roomy, well-ventilated and clean. We loved all the personal touches, including the towel origami and the colorful coconuts. It was also nice to have a big kitchen and patio to cook in. It looks just as good as it does in the pictures. The house is really close to the bay, which is so peaceful. Stay here when you come to the Big Island. It's beautiful and secluded. We highly recommend it!

In a life of roaming the world, my wife and I have stayed in a hundred guest houses. This is one of the best. Big and comfortable, yet open to the Hawaiian breezes, it is just steps from a little village around an historic bay. We kayaked across the bay with visits from dolphins, whales and a manta ray. There was lots of room for family and friends too. You are going to love this place.
