Ship Bottom History: The area was quiet and deserted until the establishment of U.S. Life Saving Station # 20 in 1872. The station was named the Ship Bottom Station, and the surrounding community that grew around the station shared the name. When the Manahawkin and Long Beach Railroad was established in 1886, the trestle ended here in Ship Bottom. Several small developments grew around the Life Saving Station and the railroad stop. One of these developments was called Beach Arlington, and when the train station was named, the developers saw to it that their name was the one given to the stop. Thus, from 1892 until 1925, the community s name was Ship Bottom - Beach Arlington.
It was in 1925 that the borough separated from Long Beach Township.
