About this cottage rental
This original 4-bedroom 1940s bach (one of the first in Whangamata!) with all the charm of real old Kiwi summer baches, and with plenty of living indoors and out. Low key, warm and friendly, it's been a magnet for families for over 35 years.
The Whangamata bach features a generous deck in front that catches glimpses of the sea and is shaded by the ancient pohutukawa tree for outdoor meals or lounging, while a smaller porch with sofa is the perfect napping spot. A deck off the kitchen is the sunset cocktail centre, easy to supervise the barbecue chef. Under the pohutukawa tree there's room for all the deck chairs, a chair hammock and regular one, so there is no arguing over lounging pozzies.
The stainless steel and rimu kitchen has enough room for two cooks to work happily together, with a modern stove and fridge freezer, plenty of good pots and pans, and a microwave. No dishwasher, that's the family-bonding time for the kids. In summer there is a herb garden going for family and guests.
Living room and four indoor bedrooms have charming vintage style. Master double bedroom has en-suite bathroom with a tub for bathing small folks plus laundry. Second bathroom includes shower and separate toilet. Guest accommodation includes a second double bedroom, a bedroom with 3 singles and 2 rollaways, and a cosy single room.
The shelves are stacked with games, books (including vintage sets of Agatha Christie and Dick Francis), toys for the kids and a radio. The garage has boogie boards, sand and fishing toys, boules and croquet, and the most novel beer fridge in town. Outdoor shower, solar powered (that's a hose, in the sun) for rinsing off, and plenty of room on the double section to fit both cars and the essential cricket games. Park the car and jump on the two old-fashioned bicycles to pedal around town (plus one kid's bike).
Cross the road to the beach, wander 100 m to the Surf Club or Blackie's coffee. Head over to the estuary for quiet paddle. It's the perfect set up for two families with small kids, but equally cosy for winter weekends for two.
The slice of history is waiting for future memories.....
As there is a section of the deck without a barrier with a small drop on to grass, all guests should take care when using this area due to the risk of falls. There are no more than 8 adults at all times with remainder to be children 17 yrs and under. The ramp leading in to the property is not suitable for wheelchairs and the front ranch slider door entrance has a lip also not suitable for wheelchairs. Please note a bond may be charged at certain times of the year. One of our team members will contact you if this is required for your booking.

What a perfect little slice of Kiwiana heaven!
What a perfect little slice of Kiwiana heaven! This bach is also like the Tardis in that it's amazing just how much space is in there! The kitchen is incredibly well stocked with every implement you're likely to need, and there are so many great books I have to go back again soon just to read more. The second bathroom was really just the icing on the cake. Only seconds from the beach - it's really hard to fault this wonderful spot.

We absolutely loved our stay.
We absolutely loved our stay. The bach is quintessentially kiwi and full of charm - things may be a little old and tired but we found everything that we needed and enjoyed being in a home that is obviously so well loved. The location is brilliant, just a hop skip and a jump to the beach. We hope we can book this bach again in the future.
