Shocking that we booked, and paid, for 5 people and you only provide bedding for 4!! How is that even possible? And then to be told we need to pay $100 a night for an extra bed. If I’d know this beforehand I would have booked elsewhere. The facility is so run down - we used to love staying here annually. We were shocked at having to walk over sticky ripped up carpet floors and found the staff showed no signs of wanting to help or find ways to make our stay easier.
We highly recommend changing your breakfast costs! It’s cheaper to eat buffet breakfast at a 5star hotel in Auckland.

Really friendly and polite staff both checking in and check out. Pointed us in the right direction for onsite spas and pools too. Super comfortable bed even in the low cost room.
Everything was exceptional

Location ideal. For what we needed.
Comfortable room and bed.

Clean and tidy. The hot pool which was open!
Pretty basic considering the price. I paid 5* price for one night and found the hotel amenities & facilities to be 2*. Rooms are dated - old, frayed furnishings and carpets are worn. Bathroom amenity kits are really limited eg 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner and no robes or slippers for wearing to the pool (which are not terrible things but the cost was as much as a good hotel in Singapore & I was travelling super light!!!) The restaurant is a bar which hasn't been refurbed or updated for many years. Food was good as was the service. The hotel advertised 2 hot pools, only 1 was accessible. Raining the night I stayed and not even an umbrella in the room to walk to / from the restaurant/bar or pool.

The receptionist was very accommodating and found us another room, even though it was almost fully booked. Dinner was excellent at the Geyser, lovely wine on the menu, and we enjoyed the spa and sauna.
My sister had changed our booking over the phone the day before and quoted an additional amount for a larger room but when we got there the change hadn't been made, so we had to book and pay for another whole room.
The refrigerator in our room (906) had been turned off and as there wasn't a label on the switch we didn't realise nor know how to turn it back on, so nothing stayed cold.

Spa pool was a bit disapointing, the sauna was nice
The shower head in room 606 was faulty

The rooms were clean and quiet. The pool was lovely - the steam rising during a cold night was magical. The buffet dinner was top notch.
The free standard WiFi dropped off frequently, and then a pop up to stay I needed to wait 8 hours to reconnect on the standard pack - There was another option but required me to join with my email address etc.

Wairakei is resort accommodation located around 8klm from Lake Taupo. It is an extremely quiet location and well appointed with geothermal swimming pools and a number of smaller spas. We arrived later than expected (thanks to good old Jetstar) and went straight to the restaurant which has a pretty good menu and reasonable pricing given you somewhat out of town. I had booked multiple rooms for family members and there was a bit of confusion on check-in but this was sorted out with an upgrade for my wife and I from a Studio King to a large King apartment with an adjoining kitchen and lounge area. In hindsight, the Studio King was the wrong choice anyway and you are better off with one of the twin style rooms. The large thermal swimming pool was the star of the day and we spent a lot of time in it as it is the warmest outdoor swimming pool we have ever swum in. There is a well appointed gym and a tennis court with adjacent 9 hole golf course but we did not utilise these.
The hotel was nice but severely run down in some areas with the thread backing of the carpet showing through the pile. This gives a bad first impression for what is a grand old hotel. As said, the pool is the star but there are a number of spas. These are more like the home spas of the 80's being a fibreglass shell that will struggle to take 4 people. Stick to the pool.

Wairakei is resort style accommodation and revolves around its geothermal location with heated pools and spas.
My daughter had this room and it was fine for a couple with a young bub as a travel cot was provided at no charge.
The room was neat and clean but the common areas like hallways and stairs are showing significant aging. Needs a severe refresh,

I was in heaven at this stay! While I didn't use the pool, the room as exceptionally clean, and I had the perfect view of the lake. The hot tub was so refreshing after all of the walking I did that day!
Nothing!

I'm a repeat customer. I like that everything is there on the property like the well equipped gym, restaurants and pools. The housekeeping is done promptly.

It’s a shame the property is so neglected . Worn @ damaged carpets everywhere , old fittings etc . Lovely setting & good staff but badley needs upgrading
2.5 / 5.0
Location, bar/restaurant on site, car parking, hot swim pool, clean.
Lack of amenities in room. Main fridge switch next to plug for kettle - so fridge off for a whole day without knowing. basically not identified. No housekeeping (ie no cleaning/change of bins/ basically DIY ! - for three nights and notified after booking yet price remained same. Bed was overly firm. one pillow supplied no spares. very over priced and not how I would describe as a resort.
