Location
As soon as I entered the room, a cockroach was there.

Très bien placé dans le centre historique.
Nous avons entendu des souris toute la nuit qui marchaient au dessus du plafond. Le petit déjeuner laisse à désirer.

Very beautiful building in the heart of the historic centre of Sao Luis, house well maintained. Great location and very walkable area.
The check-in could have been much better. I booked the place just before boarding a flight. Because I did not have roaming access in Brazil I was not able to notify the host of my exact arrival time. I understand that this might frustrate the host, but I could detect a very strong sense of annoyance on her part. Understandable to a point, but I really was not able to do much about it and I arrived at a very reasonable time (18:00). Nevertheless, I had the strong feeling that she was quite impatient and wanted to get off work as soon as possible. Again, understandable, but I also don't want to feel like I am a huge burden. Also, breakfast is poor by Brazilian standards.

Casa Lavinia is the most beautiful guesthouse I have seen in Brazil. A rather inconspicuous facade reveals a spacious, elegant colonial house with heigh ceilings and floors and furniture made from precious tropical wood. There is a large, comfortable living room with a fine library of selected classics and a gallery with views into the green patio. Our room Padronal was designed in oriental style with a giant bathroom tiled with mosaics and Moroccan furniture. Everything looked very tasteful and exquisite.
For explorations of Sao Luis, Casa Lavinia enjoys a perfect location right in the historical city centre, 5 minutes walk from the market hall around which you will find some good restaurants.
The Wi-Fi signal was not very good in all parts of the room, probably due to the architecture of the house. The tv in the living room comes with Netflix but I did not get it working.

Huge rooms and bathroom in beautiful old colonial building. Comfy bed nice linen.
Property was advertised to have Wi-Fi but we could only get it in the bathroom or downstairs. We informed the staff but they were unable to do anything. The tv in the common area didn’t work - the staff attempted to fix it but all they did was bring the roku box up and connected it - because there was no Wi-Fi it still didn’t work. On the first day the breakfast was good however by our 4th day all the food was stale and very little selection was left. The ham had turned white and slimy. We asked staff if they were going to replenish the food but they said it was raining and couldn’t. The good thing was that they would cook you an omelette or tapioca if you asked. These were yummy but after the incident with the rancid ham we didn’t trust any of the food there…

Awesome location, very friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful restored home with lovely artwork and themed rooms. There is a very cool art scene in the area with many artist creating in their studios as you walk along the streets with beautiful architecture in the streets. So much potential for this city to be a cool destination with Lençios close by (even though Lençios was more touristy than advertised) if investment and more thoughtfulness is applied.
The bed was not very comfortable and is in need of replacement as it was not very firm at all and left us with back pain throughout our stay. It was also listed as having an Airport Shuttle but we were told there is no shuttle once we arrived. Important note for travelers: while I would recommend staying here for sure when in Sao Luis there is not really that much to do in the area, especially during the week and the beaches aren’t great either so for one or two nights it’s worth stay here for sure but keep expectations low as far as activities and things to do.

Location historical center - walking distance
Breakfast home made nice, good tasting, plenty
Excellent advice from owner for trips, even in Barreirinhas. Owner booked two sensational trips for us!! One by car and one by fast boat. Safe, professional, Customer focused.
All good, what can be expected from an historical building.

- Ideally located next to the historical area, ideal to plan a visit
- The house is very beautiful and there is a courtyard where you can chill
- great breakfast
- I was in a room on the 1st floor and I could literally hear the person in the room next door snoring... I could not sleep for the whole night...
- Bed mattress was a bit old, you could feel a whole in the middle
- Cleaning was OK but not amazing particularly in the bathroom

The people running the place were outstanding, very accommodating of late arrival and early departure, worked with Google translate to guide us, very friendly. The room was spacious and the shower good. Breakfast a continental one but good. Location superb for walking in the cultural historic centre.
Access to a kettle for making a hot drink in the eve would be appreciated.

Set in a historic building dating back to 1856. Stylish & spacious themed rooms (e.g. Marrakesh, Zanzibar). Run by a super friendly couple.
4.5 / 5.0
Excellent, convenient old town location, super beautiful (interior) old building with large, specially decorated, travel-themed rooms (ours was “Zanzibar”) with a large, shared living room, good typical breakfast with everything available, plus very kind and helpful staff. Good aircon and decent mattress on 4 post bed. Special place, would stay again! Found free, safe, easy parking on the street right outside.
Very weak and intermittent wifi in the room - should be easy to improve.

We loved this small guest house in the old city. It's beautifully renovated inside and the owners are attentive and helpful. Crepes at breakfast every day and we had a large, comfortable bed. Also, our room was extremely quiet, so we slept very well. Easily one of my favorite places that I've stayed. Incredible value for the price.
Shower didn't drain well, but it was not a big deal. In historic houses, something always needs attention.

Location in the center and old style rooms and building.
Noisy, no wifi (although they gave us some drinks for free as compensation since it was a technical malfunction). Airco was not strong enough to get the room cool. Very limited breakfast. Somewhat dangerous street (homeless people, junkies).

This is a true gem. A gorgeously restored colonial house with stunning rooms and a great breakfast in the historical center of São Luís.
São Luís itself is meh and worth only the briefest stop on your way to lençóis Maranhenses. Your accommodation has to be Casa Lavinia, which was by far our best stay on a three week trip.

The house itself is very interesting and very well updated. For being in a tropical climate I was impressed that there were no mosquitos. Everything was exceedingly clean.
This is not directly about the property but the location is a bit rough. It is nice for visiting the historic center but there are few options aside from bars in the evening. Especially closer to the pousada it is a bit uncomfortable walking at night. However, I felt very comfortable at the pousada.

Location is great - an easy walk into the historic centre and quiet safe streets around. The house is beautiful and there’s a nice covered communal balcony area, lounge and courtyard (great if you are putting children to bed earlier. Franck’s tips on where to eat (and ice cream to try) were great. He also organised our trip to the Lencois Maranhenses which he did at short notice, with great care and consideration and lots of good humour. It was wonderful and communication with him was always fast and helpful.
It’s an old building so you have to expect a few things - I would have liked a more powerful shower to wash my long hair.

Everything went super great at Casa Lavinia, the facilities are very spacious and very clean, the breakfast is also delicious. Franck our French host is very helpful and has great tips for visiting São Luis. Additionally he organized for us a 3 days trip in the Lençois National Park that was incredible, I would recommend without any hesitation!
