Efficiently run establishment with a great staff and good meals. We had the meal plan which included breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was typical Japanese and nothing fancy but very tasty. The use of local vegetables in the meals was a real plus and we enjoyed the variety. There were different main dishes to select for dinner and we were never disappointed with the four dinners we had there. The house specialty chicken was exceptional.
This establishment is homey, welcoming and comfortable to stay in. We walked to the train station, 16 minutes tops, and the town is easily explored on foot.
Great little place to use as a base for day trips.
The property was perfect for our needs-meals included, onsen, walkable to the train station for day trips and helpful staff.

We hiked the Nakasendo trail. Good location with regard to that, plus close to city centre and Kozenji Temple. Comfy futon, big room. Yukattas and onsen.
Room was not soundproofed.
4.2
The location is nice, we had a room that overlooked the river and it was really nice. The town of Kiso is beautiful as well.
4.2
The food was really good and yummy. The room was very spacious for its price
It was quite a long walk from the station.

Kiso Mikawaya is a beautiful hotel, though slightly dated, looks about built in the 80-90s. It is well maintained and the staff are incredibly helpful.
I checked in at around 5pm and ordered set dinner for 6pm. The dinner set was amazing. The breakfast was a buffet and it had a good selection.
There was a 24 hour drinks bar in the hall and it was convenient to use.
The staff was super helpful. I asked a lot of things, regarding bus times, planning the next day itinerary to tsumago/magome/narai, with suggestions on what is better, and with enquiry about luggage transport service (which they provide). There was a female staff who really went out of her way to answer my many questions. Thanks again to her, i managed to plan the next day safely.
The onsen supplies were in the main hall and i found that very convenient. there were spare pillows of different designs available in the main hall too which i thought was incredibly nice.
On top of those facilities, there was a few massage chairs on the 3/f, coin-operated washing machines, and a all-you-can read manga reading room.
The rooms were so spacious, and looked out directly onto the river. the bathroom and toilet on-suite was very clean and comfortable.
Overall I had a lovely evening inside the hotel, and I would like to come again for the comfort of the facilities, but would probably come by car, and with companions, and not alone.
Kiso Mikawaya is situated in a small run-down town called Kiso Fukushima - the town itself is not as well kept as the other nearby nakasendo towns, and on my evening tour of the town after check-in (around 6-8pm), I unfortunately ran into a male predator/molester by the footbath, after which i joined some hotel guests on their way back to the hotel, and hurried back to the hotel and managed not to be followed. It was a scary experience so i would recommend either staying inside the hotel or not travelling alone.
Also, at around 2am, i woke up to find a cockroach (4cm in length) next to my futon. thankfully there was bug spray and a plastic container in the room, and i managed to trap it inside the container and go back to sleep. I don't think it's a cleanliness issue, i guess this is inevitable in a dated hotel.
The hotel itself is quite far (20 minutes walk with luggage) from the train station. If coming by train, I recommend taking the bus both ways - 200 yen each way. the bus station is 2 minutes walk from the hotel, really convenient and safer too.

I particularly liked the river-side views and the onsen in the basement. While the staff didn’t speak much English, they did their best to provide a nice experience. Dinner and breakfast were also satisfying.
4.2
The room was nice with a balcony opening to the river. One could sleep with the river as white noise. The onsen, laundry and ironing facilities, 24hr free drink station, free breakfast, and choice of pillows made me want to stay longer. It is a calming place.
The hotel is a bit outdated but no big deal.

View of river, comfortable Japanese futon and tatami mats, onsen, breakfast
Room smell, bathroom sink area not cleaned

The room had a nice outlook over the river. It was a good sized room with ensuite. The table and beds were japanese style. The desk was good for me to do my book work. The Japanese bath was great at the end of a hard day of walking. Clothes drying racks and hangers were provided.
The dinner and breakfast provided were very tasty with plenty of choices.
The entrance to the room is a little tired looking.
We found the entrance a little hard to find because we couldn't see the name of the hotel.

Lovely spacious room with views of river. Nice onsen.

We were given an extra room as the ryokan is not full.
Dinner and breakfast were very good, for the price we paid.

Dinner and breakfast was great, excellent for the price point.
The location is a bit further away from the station, it takes about 20 mins if you walk slowly or 15 mins if you walk briskly to get to the station. Note that station is at higher elevation, so you will need to walk up slope in the final approach to the station.

Great location. Big spacious room overlooking river. Helpful staff. Onsen.
Set dinner included with price was pretty average compared to many of the set meals we've had at other hotels. We chose to eat out on the second night.
4.2
Clean, great onsen, meals were really delicious and staff very helpful
No complaints

Beautiful traditional room. The beds were comfortable. Lots of space with lounge chairs to relax and doors to shut out the light. Really great breakfast included in the price, plus amenities and the onsen. It was a good location not far from the station to visit the other post towns.
It was on the pricier side, but worth experiencing if you can.
4.2
The room and view were great. The onsen bath very nice. Food was basic but good.
The location was a taxi ride from the station. A shuttle bus would have given an extra star. It was walking distance, with luggage, 30 years ago but not anymore.

evrything was so old
evrything was so old n dated

Everything. Room, cleanliness, dinner, breakfast, drink bar and so on
Nothing in particular
4.2
the rooms are lovely - really nice setting alongside the river which you can hear flowing downstream. spacious rooms
as others have mentioned, there were hairs in the room bath tub and I wondered if it had been cleaned prior to my stay
4.2
the guy front desk was unpleasant
The room was a smoking room by mistake, I don’t smoke so I never requested a smoking room but the guy front desk was insisting that I requested and I ended up changing the room every night which was very uncomfortable

It was a little bit away from Kiso-Fukushima station but can be reaching by taxi and public bus also 15 mins walk from the station.
Breakfast is so nice and tasty and many kinds of dishes there! Staff is very friendly, room was very clean! I really liked the big public bath on the ground floor. Thank you for the nice stay!!
4.2
Nice simple ryokan with an onsen. Large rooms and affordable
4.2
The breakfast and dinner were amazing! Delicious and quite large, actually. Futons were very comfortable, and the room was quite warm. I enjoyed the view of the river from our room.
I chose a room with a private bathroom because of the current coronavirus situation. While the in-room bathroom is quite clean, I felt that the shower temperature was difficult to control and was either too hot or too cold, no real in-between.
4.2
The view was amazing with the sound of a rushing river right outside.
No food service in Room.

Large room with view of river was very comfortable.
Admittedly we were there during a regional shut down due to covid 19, and they closed the entire hotel the next day. Nevertheless, there was no reason to make us feel less than welcome and swab off surfaces as we passed. We’d been in Japan for months and presented no more risk than anyone but had the strong feeling they’d rather we were not there.

The ryokan was larger than I had expected but all public facilities were clean and comfortable. Our rooms were spacious and overlooked the river running through the town. A walk from the station would take about 15-20 minutes, but it's an easy stroll. We had a private bathroom but chose to use the shared bathing facilities and the onsen. They have a water dispenser and laundry facilities, as well as massage chairs. A range of beverages was also available at the level 1 dining area all day and night, and it was nice to have a hot chocolate for supper! The staff were also helpful in expediting luggage forwarding for us as we were rushing to catch the train, and also assisted in contacting Yamato/Ta-Q-Bin to change the destination of the luggages due to delays caused by the typhoon. We're very grateful for their help!
4.2
We enjoyed our spacious 12 tatami mat room with futons. Both the evening dinner and morning breakfast were excellent traditional Japanese meals. The view from our room of the rising river, with overnignt rain was very relaxing. This onsen hotel is good value for money, we wished we had stayed longer.
We liked everything
