About this cabin rental
Maple Spring Farm is located in the gorgeous foothills of Amherst County, VA very near Nelson County and Piney River. Secluded, quiet, private and pup friendly! Very close to Piney River, Wintergreen Ski Resort, Tye River, James River, wineries, breweries, distilleries, hiking, and fishing, in a lovely private setting. Ideal setting for artists, families, couples, and small events.
This Dogtrot Cabin was built in the 1860's and restored to its original glory and then some. Updated for modern day living, this log home features two queen bedrooms upstairs, and a large full bath on the main floor, as well as two fireplaces(one working) and a full kitchen with seating for four. The living room is very cozy with fireplace and rockers. Granny's feather stuffed sofa will make you feel like you have gone back in time. There are sitting areas and period furniture throughout the cabin for quiet reading and conversation nooks or just relaxing. Out back there is a beautiful stone patio with a grill, picnic table and furniture. In the front is a shady porch for viewing the sunset or enjoying morning coffee or an afternoon beverage in the shade.
We welcome up to four guests per night. Dogtrot log houses are rare; This home was built by an African American man from New York after the Civil War. Originally it had two chimneys, one of which collapsed years ago and now there sits an addition in its place with a full bathroom. The other chimney is fully restored and lined for use today. The landscaping is in keeping with traditional plantings of the era with a few extras. We even have a few artifacts to show from the excavation of the patio and old fireplace foundation.
There are plenty of trails to explore on our farm on foot or mountain bike. The main house is 400 feet up the hill where we welcome visitors and enjoy meeting our guests! You can pick up the keys there.
There is a campsite which can accommodate up to 10 people in 2 tents or 2 RV's. Power, water and a porta-potty included for extra fee if available. Contact owner for more information.
Our family includes four friendly dogs and three cats that might come down for a visit if you're outside and love to go on walks around the property.
This property is quite unique and cozy, and we are sure it will satisfy your outdoor getaway needs! At the end of the road, traffic is well, there is none other than us.
There are plenty of activities available in the area. Ski slopes and tubing slopes 25 minutes away at Wintergreen. The George Washington National Forest has several access points nearby. The Lockn’ Festival is 15 minutes away. The surrounding beauty of the area is an excellent location for plein-air artists. There are several breweries, wineries, a couple distilleries, food establishments within 15-30 minute drive. There are swimming and fishing lakes in the county that are free for public use. Three golf courses in the area including Poplar Grove in Amherst and Wintergreen just up 151 north in Nelson County. Trout fishing and hunting are close by in the National Forest lands. Piney River Rail Trail is 4 miles away and is 14 mile roundtrip. Bicycles, horses, dogs and humans welcome.. There are three small convenience stores and a dollar General with in 5 miles. Food Lion Grocery in Amherst or Lovingston which are 15 miles either direction.

We stayed four nights. The log home is even nicer than the pictures. Very comfortable and clean. Suzy the host was so hospitable, she had coffee stuff and and snacks available in the home for guests. Very peaceful setting, so easy to relax in. The front porch and rear patio were awesome to have our coffee on. We would definetely go back. We love history and antiques so this was a perfect place for us to stay.

WE loved this little place in this historic house. The house was nicely refurbished, with added modern conveniences, There wasn’t TV to watch, but that is exactly what we wanted for our getaway. We liked the fact that we could have wi-if to look up local attractions. The house has split unit heating and air in the rooms, so we could adjust temperatures as needed. New modern bathroom was very nice. There isn’t much privacy as we could hear what our friends were saying and talking about, so if you are traveling with friends, be aware that the house doesn’t have much sound insulation. This only added to the charm for us. Decor was vey true to the style of the house and the beds and large comfy couch were nice perks. Outside is a nice fire pit for enjoying being outside at night. Quiet and calm. There are friendly rescue dogs on the property that come to visit and hang out. Our friend had brought her dog along and he had a blast exploring the property and interacting with the owner’s dogs. There was a slight mixup about when we were to arrive, but that was addressed right away and fixed. The owner was very friendly and helpful, we enjoyed visiting with her and she even brought us a delicious home made dessert one night that was perfect. As far as the area goes, there isn’t much to do unless you are willing to take a little drive, but that didn’t bother us as we were just there to escape and relax. There is a nice hiking trail on the property.

Southern hospitality at its Best with a wonderful welcoming committee! Suzy's attention to detail is like no other! Cozy and comfy cabin with all the amenities that you need to relax into nature. Acres and acres of trails to delight 2 and 4 legged explorers with fantastic guides; Dez, Remy & Ellie. We enjoyed our first visit so much that we returned for 10 nights this time around - will definitely return again. Our deepest loving appreciation Suzy for all that you share!

This is our third time visiting, and we always love the time to disconnect a bit and just be with our family. The cabin is just great with it's historic presence combined with some modernizations. We enjoy hiking around the property with our dog and with Suzy's dogs leading the way for us
We love coming here.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Cabin was clean and had all the basic necessities. Could use a microwave and a full size refrigerator, but otherwise well-appointed. The cabin and its history were very interesting. Host was helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay again.

We had a wonderful stay in this cozy cabin. Suzy was an EXCELLENT host and went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful. Her communication prior to arrival was wonderful and a great help as we were traveling up during Tropical Storm Ian for a wedding. The cabin was great and we loved sleeping with the rain on the tin roof. My kids enjoyed all the treats Suzy left for us in the cabin. Beds were very comfortable! We will have to return when the weather is better and we can really enjoy the area!

Perfect getaway location with beautifully restored historic cabin
This is an exceptional property. The location is out of the way enough to give you the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, yet close enough to enjoy the many wineries, breweries, cideries and tons of activities and events in the local communities. My husband and I enjoyed a quiet getaway, but this property would also be ideal for two couples or a family. The cabin is beautifully restored - the charm and history remain with just enough modern amenities to make things easy and convenient. The owner is charming and responsive; directions and instructions were detailed and accurate. Would recommend arriving first time in daylight - country road might be a little daunting in the dark. Once you have seen it once, though, it is easy and the road is well maintained. We had a terrific time. Highly recommend!

19th Century Cabin
We had a great anniversary weekend spent at Susanna's cabin. Susanna was easy to communicate with, and did a great job preserving the cabin. We did several things in the area, including trails and visiting the Oakland House in Nelson County.

Perfect getaway
My family of 4 (and 2 dogs) needed a relaxing, get away from everything and our busy lives. The cabin is beautiful and clearly is the fruition of the labor of love Suzy and her family/friends put into it. Suzy was an amazing hostess with sweet gifts of items for s'mores, pancake mix, and coffee. Our dogs were welcomed by her 4 dogs and got their exercise running around. Could not have asked for a better cabin nor hostess. Highly recommend for a quiet, somewhat unplugged (still has Wifi), getaway.

The Ritz Carlton of Log Cabins
I loved this cabin! My partner and our Dobie Oakley had the best time! We literally stayed inside the cabin the entire weekend. We did venture out to the town to check out the antique shops and grab some groceries but the majority of the time was spent inside! And outside the cabin. We used the grill for dinner both nights and it was just lovely. So relaxing and great to have zero distractions and the time to be away from all the busyness at home. Suzy really did think of everything. Everything I needed I could find! The quality of furniture and decor is top notch. Super clean! And I’m rather OCD about that so it’s hard to meet my standards! That’s why I referred to it as The Ritz Carlton of log cabins. It was a perfect place and the perfect weekend away celebrating my partners 50th bday! We will be back for sure.

10 STARS!!
This cabin is AMAZING especially if you love history. We just so enjoyed it and the creaky floors. Suzy has thought of EVERYTHING and not too much at the same time.
That couch!!! I could spend my whole day IN it. Such comfy beds, soft towels and SHARP knives!!!! Never get sharp knives at a rental.
She left us a bottle of wine, fresh local apples, chocolate, the makings for smores and the fridge had condiments. My only comment to other renters would be that there is no microwave or toaster, but we made to. Also, we brought our own TV and the wi-fi was superb.
If I could give it more than 5 stars I would and Suzy too!

Just wonderful Thanksgiving!
Exactly as everyone else has said, this is a absolutely lovely place. Many thoughtful touches, and everything you’ll need. Our pups were thrilled. We walked the property and basked in the sun on the front porch on Thanksgiving Day. Had a great hike at Crabtree Falls. And Suzy and her son were just so kind (brought us wood for the fire the night we arrived). Highly recommended, 5 stars down the line. We will be back!

Great family getaway
This is our second time staying here, and we love the getaway combined with the historic nature of the cabin. The cabin has all the essentials - kitchen and accessories, heat, high speed Internet, etc. Suzy is a great host, very easy going and attentive. My kids love her dogs too and tromping around the land. Hope to be back again next year.

Cozy and quiet weekend away
This cabin had so much character! We loved the history and how well the old cabin had been preserved while still providing everything we needed for a nice getaway weekend! Nice outdoor space although it was a little too chilly for us to enjoy much time outside in mid-November. It was very warm and comfortable inside! Bathroom and kitchen were great and the bed was quite comfy. It was about 20 min to Crabtree Falls and 25 min to Downtown Lynchburg. We really enjoyed our stay!

Best playground
We loved it! The cabin was just what we needed after a long COVID lockdown in the city. We hiked, played with RC cars, grilled every night, sat around our outdoor fires, went on visits to the river, made new friends and best of all, we got to share most of it with Suzy’s lovely pups!

Clean, accurately described, and a gem of a spot… this was exactly what we were looking for to enjoy our anniversary. Great communication with the host and she even welcomed us with a delicious, homemade peach cobbler. So happy that someone preserved this cabin, which is a piece of history. We visited tons of nearby spots and had a blast. Tons of distilleries and wineries around and we even went to the nearby hometown of Earl Hamner, Jr., who wrote Walton’s Mountain - based on the hometown that we visited. On the way home we hit Paulie’s Pigout and we did. Beat BBQ we’ve had in years. We will be back to visit this cabin. Do yourself a favor and visit as well. So pleased.
