Fireplace firewood is provided for 2 fireplaces (one in kitchen and other in great room). Fire ring firewood (pine) is located next to garage. Availability varies due to restrictions, dryness, and precipitation. Firewood may be collected in nearby Tonto National Forest for 'small camp fires for free'. Text or email to check for update on wood pile. We do try to keep it stocked. Fire ring seating: Adirondack chairs and 2: 2 seater benches w/ 2 small tables. We have 4 ceramic heaters. One in each bedroom & kitchen. Feel free to place them where you want. (They use much less electricity than baseboard heat which we have also.) When you arrive at cabin, if 3 ceramic heaters are not enough, please turn on baseboard heaters until you have time to light fireplaces. Heaters take about 5 minutes to heat up. There is one located in bathroom and Bear room downstairs and a thermostat at top of stairs on the left side of wall for the living room. There is one in the Elk room and trout room too. Also, the fireplace dampers/flutes are closed. Before starting fires please look up and pull the black bar forward to you to open so fire smoke goes up chimney. If one fireplace is not in use keep that damper closed so smoke from the other fireplace doesn't reenter home because the chimney stacks are next to each other. From our and other guests it is best to place firewood as far back from front as possible to encourage smoke up flute and when first lighting it to heat up the chimney stack with a firestarter stick. (Please bring). These are just tricks you may already know. When the fire is out its best to close flute as soon as possible, because when the chimney stack cools down it can drive cold smoky air in. If that happens, just open the windows and run the ceiling fans. Every bedroom has ceiling fans. The great room has 2. AC in living room, bear room, trout room, elk room.
Fishing licenses can be purchased at the camping, hunting, outdoor sports counter of Walmart in Payson. Even in the winter, there is hold over trout at the 1st and 2nd wet bridges. They are the smarter ones that lasted thru the angler season so they are spooky, but if you catch one you are the master! A honey hole document for fishing hot spots will be sent with directions and cabin keyless entry code after payment is made in full a day prior to stay.

At 6.9 miles, the first East Verde River access (parking area on right) is just beyond the bridge overpass has some great shallow swimming holes friendly to kids, dogs. It is a fish and game trout stocking spot. At 7.5 miles the next parking area on right is called Waterwheel which is VERY scenic with hiking trails and waterfalls. Upstream from cabin (take a right on Houston Mesa Rd from cabin, bear left at the road split). It is called Washington Park and is another river access with a well known great hiking trail called Highline Trail (5 miles from cabin). My family really enjoyed our stay here! Property had everything you would need for a nice weekend away with the kiddos and the location is beautiful and quiet.

My mother's house is across the river on Apple lane.
Love the hunting theme throughout cabin..
My brother worked on this cabin and my nephew built the gazebo for you thru Home Depot.
Your cabin feels like home. I hope to rent again soon.

Me and my husband love the drive up there so very quiet and peaceful. We love the river saw elk deer.

The property was clean and a beautiful location! Have told my friends and families about property/experience are having discussions of coming back!

Better than a hotel. Great stay for the family, hopefully we will return soon.

Stayed with my two kids under age of 12 and our two medium sized dogs. The entire property is fenced which is great! Only issue was my dogs wanted to bark at the sweet lab pups to property next of this rental. Additionally, part of the back fence is bent down a bit but my dogs are not jumpers so it was not a worry that they would jump over that part of fence. The home was beautiful and very close to wagon wheel.

This is a nice little cabin off the beaten path but close enough to town for a nice restaurant dinner. The kitchen has every kind of cooking utensil you could ever need (accept a cheese slicer :) There is a computer nook and the entertainment center with big screen TV made us feel like we were actually in the video games. LOL We had a crackling fire and the Christmas decorations were a nice touch. Overall it was a great stay and the host has a large binder with all the information you could possible need. Since there was no snow we did an area hike near the creek. A few suggestions to make it better would be a sitting chair in the downstairs bedroom. Me and my old dog don't do stairs well and preferred to stay downstairs for morning coffee. It would have been nice to have a comfortable chair to relax in. If it was summer we would have went out on the deck but this was a winter stay. There were many space heaters and we managed to keep warm but the doors were not insulated and were drafty. Overall I would recommend again.

My family and I really enjoyed the family time with each other. It felt like a 2nd home with a touch of getaway 😊 Everything at your disposal you would need. And the house was decorated very Beautifully for Christmas 🎄
Great Job!

The property was everything the listed said it would be and you couldn’t ask for a better setting in beautiful Tonto National Forest. I will definitely be back. The hosts were great!

We took the grandkids up to the Payson area for Fall break. We appreciated the amount of family-friendly games, movies, and outdoor fire pit for that camping out feeling. Lots of toys and games provided. The pets are welcome here too. The location was perfect for family hikes, fishing, etc. There were elk wandering around the neighborhood every day. The kids enjoyed playing in the nearby river they could walk to & swing/slide in yard. Beautiful night skies for star gazing too. To clarify the number the beds accommodate to 6 (or 7 ) would be helpful (2 adults, 4 kids, 1 infant). Two rooms have bunk beds (one set down stairs, one set upstairs with a crib) and one room has a queen size bed (upstairs). The seating for meals at the dining room table was tight. The cleanliness was not up to my standards, but not a health hazard (i.e., toys and trash under the upstairs bunk bed, wall beside top bunk was dirty, caulking around tubs needed bleaching and windows & baseboards need to be cleaned).

We had a fabulous time staying at this cabin! The kids had a great time hanging out upstairs in the living room, while us parents relaxed out on the porch and by the fire pit. It was great to have a fenced in area so our dog could run around and play. We saw Elk roaming behind the house and right in front of the house walking on the road - very cool! The place is clean and the kitchen is well equipped with whatever you might need. The owners were quick to answer any questions we had. We spent time hiking along and in the nearby creek by the wet bridge. The neighborhood is quiet and the neighbors are friendly. Since the house sits at almost the end of the road with an empty field next to it, it really feels like you have lots of space all to yourself! Thank you Wendy and Charlie for sharing your home with us!

We have stayed here a few times with in the past years. My husband, kids and I, absolutely love this place. I highly recommend. The place is beautiful and peaceful. The deer and elk come right into the property and it’s a great sight to see. They have the whole place set up so comfortably like your home away from home.
4.7
The house was everything that was listed and more. It was the perfect place for my family to come together after a very hard year. After a funeral the cabin was the place for quiet and reflection. It had everything you could ever want for a family stay. The elk were great and tame. Will definitely book again and recommend to other families. Thank you.

We liked the area
House was kind of musty

We spent a long weekend which included 3 generations of family members. It is a secluded neighborhood just a few minutes drive to access to the Verde River. The cabin is comfortable with all the necessities. We enjoyed the themed rooms and the enclosed yard was a great size for the kids to throw the football around. There is a great deck to gather and have conversation or watch the stars.
The only negatives were the lack of adequate lighting in the kitchen to prepare meals and in the Bear Cave. I like to read before bed and the little lamp was insufficient. A table on the deck would be a great addition for meals. We made do with a card table for the littles and the adults seated at the kitchen table.
We enjoyed our family getaway and hope to return in the future!

My husband and I stayed here last weekend with our two dogs and we had an incredible time! First off, I love that the owners not only give a very accurate description of this place but they provide so much detailed information and awesome little tips about the the property and surrounding areas. Such a cute home in an incredibly scenic area!!! We want to come back in a couple of weeks and stay for longer so we have more time to venture out to all the beautiful little hiking trails within minutes of the property! The elk showed up within hours of our arrival, cool seeing them so up close and completely unbothered by us. We spent hours on the porch every night enjoying the cooler temps and stars while the dogs ran around the completely fenced in yard. We spent one day at willow springs lake and spent the other days hiking around the 2nd and 3rd crossing near the property (3rd crossing was my personal favorite). This place offers everything it states in the description and so much more! We can’t wait to come back!!!

First the queen bed mattress was bigger than the box spring. Kept sliding off the bed and there were king sheets on the bed. The yard needs work, we had to keep taking burrs off our dog. It would be nice to have an access to the river. Also a picnic table so we could all eat together outside. We had to move the couch and it looked like no one had ever cleaned behind it. The tv area was nice and there were plenty of cooking utensils.
4.7
My family really enjoyed the location and the amenities this property has to offer. My kids are 3yo and 1.5yo and with the new playset in they spent several hours a day swinging, climbing and running around it. Neighborhood is generally really quiet besides the animals that roam around. In the surrounding area it runs along a stream, so access to exploring the water is really convenient. We would stay here again!
4.7
Wendy was so helpful and the cabin was great! It’s secluded but can still get to town with a short drive for supplies. The river crossings were great in the summer heat, and the elk in the evenings were great to watch! The cabin is unique and cozy while still providing room to spread out and have individual time. We would definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.

We had a peaceful comfortable stay in the home in Whispering Pines near East Verde River. Easy access to water, hiking and exploring.
The home is comfortable and clean, with good AC. Enjoying the porch early morning and evening was very nice. Our dogs were all very happy to have the fenced yard to explore.
When I needed to reach Wendy, I had immediate response and communication.
If your looking for a easy get away, I’d recommend this home

Upon arrival, the house smelled of smoke from burnt wood being left in the fireplace . The toilet clogged up with the first flush so we plunged that. Our dog ran up into the deck crying and chewing at her legs . She was infested with burrs and we had to cut all the hair off her legs and chest. The weeds in the yard went halfway up the calf of my legs The sink in the upstairs bath was faulty. The TV in the one upstairs room didn’t work. The icing on the cake was when the fire alarm started chirping. We had my 90 year old parents along and ended up packing everything up and leaving. The host voice mail was full. We texted and sent urgent messages through the VRBO site asking the host to call. We waited 30 minutes and sent another message telling the host we were leaving. 20 minutes after we left they emailed us, clearly not wanting to speak about the problems we had . I asked them again to call me the next day. They still haven’t called. The host claimed to have called me twice. I sent her a screenshot of my recent calls so she could see that her number isn’t there. It’s our first bad experience with VRBO. We are asking for our money back.

When I booked this, there was no mention of a swing for kids. My 1 1/2 year old grand daughter had a BLAST swinging and climbing and sliding on the newly installed play area. AMAZING!!!!
With all of the toys and books that were available to her, the STAYED busy the whole time.
I normally do not review ANYTHING. But, I could not be happier about this rental.
My family(all 4 generations) had an WONDERFULL getaway here.
Thank You Host

We had so much fun staying here! Beautiful location. The property is private and relaxing! Kitchen is well stocked and beds were super comfy! This is a cozy cabin in the woods. Checkin was easy and hassle free. My kids had so much playing...lots of toys to entertain the little ones. Stairs have a baby gate and the downstairs door opens at the half to keep kids and dogs in or critters out. We were visited by an friendly elk who hopped the back fence and grazed right next to us at the fire pit in the front yard. The field next to the house was filled with 25 or more elk. It was so cool to see so many soooo close. The river and creeks were flowing fast and we had a great time hiking through the woods. Absolutely beautiful location! We really enjoyed our stay.

We would def stay here again
Thanks Wendy🌼

We had a winter vacation with extended family. It was wonderful. House is beautiful, clean, and great location. Management kept in contact before visit extremely nice people. We were fortunate to wake up to snow 2 mornings in a row. The kids and adults loved it. Big change from Maricopa, AZ. We will be returning.... wonderful relaxing experience.

There was plenty to do a lot of areas to explore. My family and I enjoy exploring the wilderness and there are many areas to hike and explore the scenery.

Been a few times and really recommended it

Cabin was nice and clean with plenty of room but had a few DVD players and TVs not working also room TVs need updated they are old tvs then listing said wood is provided for fireplaces as the house has no heating system and it's cold there but all the wood was to big to use I had to buy an axe to split wood for the family myself so ok house and stay but could use work and updates

The location was PERFECT! Very quiet area, Elk and wildlife to feed and enjoy. Great firepit and porch. Easy to access and the home had everything we needed - Wendy addressed all our questions quickly. We had a GREAT time! THANK YOU again!

Everything was great. Owners were very informative. Nice relaxing and quiet area.

Cabin was everything thing said it was. The beds wear very uncomfortable. All in all we had a great time, thank you for letting us enjoy your cabin, look forward to doing it again.

Nice cabin in a great location. Lots of hiking, walking, communing with nature , etc. spots very close by. The neighborhood is very quiet, located in a little community about 10 miles from Prescott. The cabin was clean and well stocked, including a nice washer & dryer. The beds were very soft and squishy, basically foam mattresses on top of 2 memory foam mattress toppers. We ended up moving one on to the floor and sleeping there so it wouldn't be so saggy. Internet worked well for streaming movies and Zoom meetings. The dogs loved the yard, which was fully fenced and secure. The grass & weeds in the yard were very tall, presumably due to the monsoon rains. Our big dogs didn't mind at all, but it might be a problem for smaller dogs or children. Overall, the location makes up for any inconveniences in the cabin. Incredible quiet and beauty. We spent hours every day sitting on the front porch under the sun umbrella, just reading and watching the trees and wildlife. Really a nice place to get out of the August Phoenix heat.
4.7
The outside was not very inviting. Patio Furniture was dirty and lots of cob webs. The lawn was not manicured so there were a lot of bugs. Inside was clean and nice.
4.7
When we arrived we found that the outside/inside was not maintained well.
Inside: Carpet, beddings, etc. did not look or feel clean. Showers and faucets were also old and did not work well.
Outside: Pine trees were very over grown, yard was not maintained well, many spider webs, ant hills, etc. around the house near entry ways and in the yard.
