The most incredible and welcoming hosts you could meet, they greeted us and showed us around the beautiful ryokan. You get lots of privacy and can use the onsen easily, it is very spacious and comfortable. The meals were incredible and a great chance to try new things for tourists! We just loved the hosts and couldn't reccomend enough
Nothing, it was perfect!

It was absolutely like a dream! It is the closest you can get to staying with a local family. The hosts were incredible and lovely and took care of us and it honestly felt like coming home to visit family. It was in a beautiful location and every room of the property was spectacular, clean and incredible to be in. Massive thank you to our hosts for the incredible stay, we loved it.

Very nice accommodation. Clean and comfortable. Nice japanese breakfast
We arrived before 6 pm and didn't get dinner. I asked for it twice and the answer was just "No dinner... Sorry" with no explanation...

An authentic ryokan that is worth the experience!
Staff - They truly made our stay and went above and beyond! Although they spoke very little English, they were able to communicate effectively and made us feel at home. Upon arrival, they offered us tea in our room and dressed us in traditional yakuta. We went for dinner and when we came back, they had moved the furniture to set out our futon beds. When they saw that we had hung our laundry up to dry in the room, they asked if they could hang it up outside for us. By the time we got home that evening, they had folded all our clothes! We absoultely loved talking to them and they were so sweet and funny.
Room - We opted for the room with a ensuite bathroom and view of the river. The river is beautiful and you could hear the peaceful water even with the windows closed. The room was large so we had plenty of room for our things. The futon beds were VERY comfortable! Also, they offer heat and AC that worked well.
Onsen - Wow! This was one of a few onsens we experienced in Japan and definitely a unique experience. They allow tattoos, which was why we selected Sumiyoshi in the first place as my husband is covered in tattoos. You can lock the door behind you so my husband and I used it together. The water was so relaxing!
Meals - We tried the Japanese and Continental breakfasts and both were delightful. Both meals were plenty of food and they offered us fresh coffee, tea, juice, and water. We had to leave very early on our last morning so they even fixed us breakfast earlier than the usual time and had everything ready when we woke up.
Location - The location on the river is what makes the location spectacular. It was about a 10-15 minute walk from Takayama Station but even when it rained, the main sidewalk is covered so we stayed dry. It is a short walk over to the historical area.
The bathrooms are certainly dated but we mostly used the onsen to bathe anyways, so this wasn't an issue.
They initially told me they had a washing machine but they did not, so we washed our clothes in the bathtub and hung dry.

The amazing Japanese Breakfast, hospitality of the staff, the ryokan structure itself (onsen included, small but perfectly fine for a relaxing end of the day)
it was a bit cold the first night, but after I’ve reported it, they provided an electric blanket that made the second night perfect!

We stayed for one night only in Dec 2022, but managed to enjoy both breakfast and dinner. Both were a great experience, do leave enough room for a big meal!
We arrived just ahead of dinner, staff showed us to the parking space across the road (on the same side of the river). As the road to the hotel is very narrow, we couldn't park there but there was enough space to stop, get down, and ask staff for directions to the overnight carpark. Had the bathroom and hot tub to ourselves to shower (the bathroom can be locked from the inside once you are in). Beds were made for us. Our room was on the second floor, up a flight of stairs, so it was good to pack a small bag fo the night as there was no elevator.
Staff were very friendly, location was great, just a stone's throw away from miyagawa morning market and the sanmachi area.

Very kind host. Very good position near the historical street of Takayama and near the morning market. An amazing experience in a typical Japanese Ryokan. Fantastic onsen.

Great experience, very well taken care of, lovely hotel.

Great, old-fashioned ryokan with very welcoming owners, who are extremely friendly and willing to help. Oba-chan was a scream! We had a really good room, with a sitting area overlooking the river, and private bathroom. Breakfast was fantastic, and enough that we barely neded to eat again before dinner. There is a common bath, but we didn't have time to use it.
We would highly recommend Sumiyoshi Ryokan.
