Fantastic little house, with a properly equipped kitchen for cooking at home. Its a calm space, on a quiet street - I loved that it was tucked up along a short path. The hosts have nailed the "little things" that make the difference - there are a few books, blankets, cosy lighting, but also sensible storage for clothes, food and the like. Easy to live in for a work week. Style and substance :-)
Only downside - the soft beds. I like a firm mattress and neither of the beds was that. That is the only reason I didnt give 10 stars across the board.

Charming, Victorian cottage in a quirky village. Equiped with everything we needed and extra touches such as Cava and treats. Enjoyed walking around the village looking at all the different architectural styles. Very convenient to be able to walk along the river path into Colchester and catch bus/train back. Loved the Castle Museum. Train to the coast was great too. Sitting on the patio with a glass of wine at the end of the day.
Nothing to dislike. Oven needed cleaning a bit more but we ate out mostly so not important.

Pretty cottage with nice little touches.
Two of the windows wouldn’t shut. Very steep stairs.

very calm as well.

it was appalling & we moved out after 1 night stay even though we had paid for 3 nights
we’ve sent a list of items to the owners with accompanying photos & we’ve not had a response. This property should not be advertised on booking.com & we’ll be giving consideration to future bookings that we’ve made also….this property is not maintained & I will be putting in a formal complaint

Very quaint well equipped cottage
Stairs very steep.my partner has mobility issues and nowhere in the write up does it mention very steep stairs and that also was a problem for our dog who could not get up them and nothing to grip on so had to carry our beagle up and downstairs very dangerous

We had a wonderful few days at the Secret Cottage. It has a very homely feel and had all the accessories and facilities we needed. Beds were very comfortable and we all slept so well.
The location was great too just a short walk to the pub and quay. It was all as described but better in real life once we found the secret entrance as shown in the photo. Plus the little extras made all the difference.

The cosyness of the cottage, the little touches, the surroundings, the quietness and the general relaxing nature of all of it.

What a delightful little cottage.
A perfect cottage in a perfect location.
There was so much to do locally, plenty of long walks in woodlands and by the river. The train station is two minutes walk away for trips the Colchester for more entertainment etc. You could even head to London.
There are a number of pubs and a few little café and tea rooms. These appear to be independent and were so tiny that I didn't manage to get a place in the days that I was there.
There are take aways, chip shop and a co op all within a few minutes walk.
The weather was amazing and I was able to make the most of the patio which was flooded with sunshine and perfect for reading a book and having a drink.
The house is compact, but thoughtfully decorated and clean and tidy.
The age and character of the property lead to some limitations as you would expect, but I thought it was lovely for my short stay of a couple of nights.
Despite being a terrace house it was quiet and peaceful.
There are two double bedrooms which are light and spacious with lovely crisp bedding and such comfortable mattresses.
The bathroom is quirky and colourful with lashings of hot water and lovely ethical cleaning products.
The kitchen had all you could need, though limited space to put your food.
There were nice touches of milk, tea, coffee and a bottle of fizz, should you wish it.
I was very impressed and would certainly book to stay there again.
The house was wonderful but a couple of associated niggles.. Parking was not easy and I ended up quite a distance from the house. Fortunately you don't need the car as everything is in walking distance but it did make packing and unpacking more tricky owing to a disability I have.
Owing to the age of the building the staircase is narrow and steep. It is painted which makes it slippy in socks! My own fault.

A lot of thought had gone into providing extra touches from the welcome bottle in the fridge to toiletries in the bathroom. All the essentials were there and the cottage felt really homely.
The only thing missing was a hairdryer - but we were only there for 2 nights so it wasn't essential.

This lovely cottage has such character with a modern twist, its in a quiet location with only a few minutes walk to facilities, really nice place to stay.
The secret cottage was a lovely, clean and cosy place to stay in a great location near to facilities

Excellent location, we were pleased to find a good childrens park very close to the cottage and the village was beautiful.
The hosts left some thoughtful gifts including easter eggs and bubbly! Much appreciated.
Unfortunately the front door was broken so we didnt have direct accesses to the sun terrace. Internet was also disconnected which was inconvenient however we were appropriately compensated for this.
