Reviewer Comments:
The house was appropriately stocked, hurricane came than week but we were able to utilize the kayaks - hot tub - pool. The kids played pool and we loved the multi level decks for all weather occasions. We didn’t have to worry about the horse tours driving past our place (Game changer they are obnoxious). 5/5 stars had no issues with the place or the week! Thank you for letting us stay at your place! Only suggestion: 4-6 pm possible check in time is ridiculous (I get it) but there has to be a better way around that when people are traveling already 8 hours for a beach vacation.

The property pictures on line are very outdated. The house is run down. Needs renovations. One bathroom smelled like sewer. Commodes were stained and dirty. Floors were not swept. Water has a terrible smell. Basement Bathroom was not finished around shower. One of the 3rd floor bathrooms smelled like mildew. The 3rd floor kids room floor felt like it was falling in. Sliding doors did not lock. Had to put a wood stop in them. 3rd floor deck is falling apart. Afraid to walk on it. Yard was unkept. Briars and weeds around deck and growing up pool enclosure. Too many things to list.
On a good note; we loved the horses and the beach.

We were directed to stop at the office in Duck to get beach passes, they were not there called & were told they were at the house. Got a call on the way to the house about some work bing done to the lower floor bathroom & that contractors would need to come back to get some construction materials, but not to worry they wouldn't be in the house. Arrived to find multiple men in the house replacing the lower level bathroom, this was not a bathroom repair but a remodel. The old toilet & sink were left on the property because the workers did not have room in their vehicle to remove it all. We paid the $250 fee to have the pool heated, the heater wasnt on. Reached out Sunday evening and the pool man came on Monday (without the text to let us know they were on the way we were told we would get). The breaker had been turned off (I assume by the workers) realized later that most of the lower level lights did not work, also because of a breaker issue. Sent a text sunday and Monday as well as a phone call regarding the washer not draining, was told a repairman would be out, he came and said that they dont repair this issue they would need a new unit. I emphasized that a new unit was needed because we had packed as if we had a working washer and dryer. Texted asking rental co about a replacement, response was that they had to get ahold of owner and would get back to me. I never heard back. Son's foot went through deck boards on boat dock. Floors werent swept & pool area had debris

This was our first visit to OBX. We all had a blast. We made so many memories! Sandy Cheeks was a cute getaway. However, I think the realty company, and owners, need to be made aware of the shotty job housekeeping does. The house was filthy. From the caked on windows, to the toothpaste splashed bathrooms...The water smelled like burnt eggs which I chalk up to the septic and tons of rain. There were cig butts and glass bottles on the perimeter of the house. The grill had summer of '69 grease on it. We had propane delivered during our stay. That guy was so friendly! BUT! After a day of cleaning and exploring this beautiful beach and surroundings, we had a lovely time! We even had a horse on the property!!! He made his way right into the canal and across. If you stay here, bring your own linens, towels and cleaning supplies. You'll need them. But you'll leave with a ton of memories! We had a great time!!

If you want to be away from the touristy portions of beach area, This place is for you. Four-wheel-drive and JetSki accessible. Love it. My only recommendation would be that the house needs a really good power wash on the outside.

We had a very nice vacation overall. We needed a dog friendly home with 8 bedrooms and this fit the bill but we weren't blown away. The house could use some updates, living room needs more seating, the drive on the beach is long but beautiful, the house water smelled like rotten eggs at times, the pool table has zero usable cues, and the pool is small but we made it work. I think because we are on the 4x4 are we got ignored by rental company. Lower bathroom didn't have a shower curtain all week despite asking several times.

Poor maintenance planning
We stayed at sandy cheeks from July 2-9. We had 22 people in the house. When we arrived our security code to get into the house didn’t work. Our welcome packet in the email stated to call or text a certain number with any concerns. We did, several times with no response. Thankfully the code worked later on in the evening and we were able to get into the house. The house could use some updates. The pictures are deceiving. On our 4th day there our hot water tank blew up. What a mess. We called the realty company asap on Wednesday morning when it happened. We were informed that the home owner knew the maintenance man was out of town for the week and didn’t organize another maintenance company to be on call. We went without hot water from Wednesday morning til Friday evening. We were informed that the home owner would be contacting us. We have been in contact with the realty company several times since then and still haven’t heard back from anyone. No response, no apology, no partial refund or any type of compensation. When you pay that much money to go on vacation you’d expect decent service. We will find another house to stay in next summer.

Sandy Cheeks in the Storm
While we were rained out (in) most of the week due to a week long storm that hit the OBX and rest of the eastern shore-we were dry and snug as a bug in Sandy Cheeks. The 8 bedroom were well appointed and was charming and cozy. We enjoyed each others company playing games and eating and was able to truly relax and chill thanks to the weather and the hot tub. Highlights: The 4x4 drive in the storm was an adventure, a line horse appeared in front of the house and the Maile, the puppy enjoyed chasing the waves.

Dirty when we arrived, sheets were stained and dirty looking. Not enough sheets for all the beds. Hair in bath tubs. Oven filthy. Dishwasher didn't get dishes clean. Not enough seating. Commode flushing could be heard through house. Basement commode would bubble up into other basement commode. Basement frig and freezer dirty.

We had a fantastic stay in Carova Beach at Sandy Cheeks. With the canal for crabbing, fishing and kayaking, the hot tub to relax in, and a 12 minute walk to the beach, the house was the perfect location. We had plenty of room with enough beds and baths for our extended family. We used the pool table every day. The most memorable thing was the stallion, mare and foal grazing right by our house, even stepping up on the house landing. I would love to rent this house again when we return to Carova Beach.

Awesome
Lots of adventures, quiet. Viewing horses spectacular. House just like it was pictured. Could do a better job of cleaning under furniture and beds.
