Mickey and Mary were amazing hosts! Incredibly friendly and gave great advice on local attractions and logistics of getting around. They went above and beyond to make our time in Hakuba as enjoyable as possible. Breakfast was great and different each day.
Property is situated in an idyllic enclave independent from the busier towns but still close to snow resorts with Tsugaike snow resort just a 3 minute drive away.
Nothing.

Absolutely lovely family running this older hotel. They were very easy-going and friendly, offering advice when we wanted it, leaving us in peace at other times. They bought the hotel fairly recently and are clearly committed to making life in the Hakuba area work for their family. We are more than happy to support them. More than anything, we are very grateful and appreciative of how nice they were to our dog.
The hotel itself is a bit outside of town next to expanses of rice fields. We have a vehicle which is ideal, but the hotel owner was also picking up other guests and driving them about to various activities throughout the day.
The breakfast and coffee was great. Use of the kitchen materials in the evening was appreciated.
If you are looking to see Hakuba on a budget or to ski on a budget, this place is highly recommended.
No complaints.

Everything was perfect. Mickey and his wife were so hospitable and helpful. My kids and dog had a great time at Summer Leaves. My son already asked to stay there again when we go to Hakuba next time :)

very kind

Great hospitality. The breakfast was very good and different everyday. The location is ideal to access the different ski resorts... but you need a car to go around and have dinner.

Mickey and Mary are just about the perfect hosts - warm, always smiling, very friendly and ready to help with any and all of our needs. They were always willing to stop and have a conversation, and had great suggestions for ski resorts, onsens and nearby attractions. They were also very understanding about our pets' needs. The place has a dry room to store your boards/skis, boots and bindings after a day on the slopes. The location was ideal to explore all the top resorts in Hakuba - Goryu/47, Happo One and Iwatake to the south, and Tsugaike and Cortina/Norikura to the north - but if that's your plan, then having a car is a must. We loved the place and the hosts, and would definitely consider visiting again.

Mickey and Mary went above and beyond to show my partner and I the best of Hakuba. Not only did they introduce us to outstanding local restaurants and onsens—they offered transport to and from the places we were interested in exploring!
If it weren't for Mickey's recommended timing for our Tsugaike Nature Park outing, we would have missed our window into the most phenomenal views I have seen during my three years in Japan.
Summer Leaves didn't just make our Hakuba experience possible—Mickey and Mary made the trip our most memorable yet.
Bonus: The building itself is a treat, and Mickey's breakfasts are just what you need before a day's outings! Nature hikes, onsens, good food or snow sports—Summer Leaves has got you covered. 🤗

Very good place to stay and bigger than expected. There was also a Nintendo Switch free to use and as there was almost no other customers at that time, it was possible to use easily. The owner was also really kind and gave use some recommendations about where we could go for some sightseeing! I recommend this place!

Exceptional property. The hosts were amazing. They went out of their way to make our stay comfortable. It was great to talk to them about their experience living in Hakuba since they moved there a few years ago. Although it’s better to have your own car to navigate in Hakuba and to go to this property, Mickey(the host) is always ready to pick and drop you to a place if needed. Ample parking space at the property. The rooms on second floor are bare basics but the living room and dining room on the ground floor makes up for anything missing. I think if you are anyway spending most of the time in skii resorts nearby, then you will just need a comfy room to sleep in. The room was well insulated, no problems with aircon; property had clean toilets and bathroom. Mickey’s daughter shared her toys with our son. Mickey loaned us the snow brush for the car and some snow play toys when we went to skii resorts. The library in living room offers quite a few books and you can spend some time by yourself in evening or morning. Would love to go back again.
Everyone has different expectations. If your expectation is to have room service and have 5 star hotel kind of services, this may not be an option for you. But If you okay to stay in a place slightly away from downtown, and want to spend good time with your family in a quite place, this is the place for you. Again, the hosts made all the difference- made us feel super comfortable during our stay.
nothing to dislike. just that you need to have your own car. it’s better that way.

Mickey and his family were really lovely. There weren't many other people there, so they were extra helpful in telling us all about Hakuba, helping us with our ski gear and tickets (they were able to get discounts for us!), and there were nice bonuses like sichuan hot pot for purchase for dinner, movie nights, yakiimo for a snack, and a yummy breakfast. The whole family was so kind and friendly. We were both very highly stressed from life before this trip, but Mickey and the family took care of things for us which made the trip almost stress-free. Highly recommended.

Nothing.

The staff (owner and family) were super friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. They were flexible in accommodating our needs as our plans changed.
The atmosphere at Summer Leaves was like a small community. It was bright, warm, and friendly.
The bath was not available during our stay. The pillows were hard.

The house was really cozy and the owner is super nice. Helped us a lot with our car and gave us a lot of local restaurant recommendations

Excellent place to stay for families with kids. We stayed for 3 nights in the first week of January with our 2-year-old daughter and it was her first snow, she had the best time of her young life. The couples' 4-year-old daughter was a great playmate and both kids had a great time.
The hotel is far away from main roads so the children can safely play in front of the hotel in the snow. The hotel is not a 5-star establishment - so don't expect golden faucets and Persian carpets but the service was out of this world. Both owners will go out of their way to make you feel at home. The hotel is massive in size and probably built to mimic french renaissance architecture with a touch of the Meiji era.
When we entered our room there was a teddy bear on the bed for our daughter. And the breakfasts were very thoughtful and they served sliced fruits for her. Both owners are very hardworking and we felt they really enjoy what they are doing. The hotel is run by an international couple so communication was excellent. Also, they both are ex-pats with lots of experience and stories to tell so there is so much to talk about and learn.
The rooms are very well insulated and very warm and cozy. They have very large baths on the ground floor and multiple bathrooms on every floor. The common area was a great playground and cozy. If you want to escape the city life and just stay at a place where your kids have endless time to explore the surroundings and hopefully play with other guests kids who are staying - this is the place you are looking for.
The breakfast could have been an open buffet but we assumed they stopped it because of COVID which is fine.
