About this house rental
Maggie's Getaway, one of the quintessential San Juan Islands vacation rentals, on Orcas Island is a sunny, gracious two bedroom waterfront family vacation home surrounded by spectacular views of Deer Harbor. Large 400 square ft. kitchen very well stocked. Large hot tub right off the front porch, with a magnificent water view! There is even a piano for you to use in the spacious living room.
Maggie's Getaway can accommodate up to 4 guests including children; however, there are two additional bedrooms in this house and a second bathroom upstairs which can be rented if a group needs more space. Otherwise, there is no one else in upper floor bedrooms. Maggie's Getaway has a two night minimum other than during the Peak Seasons, when there is a 3 night minimum stay. When larger groups rent the whole house, there is always a 3 night minimum stay
Step out onto the welcoming front porch or into the command view outdoor Spa, where you can relax and look at your own picture postcard vistas of the smaller San Juan Islands and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the distance or at night gaze at myriad of stars in the sky and the twinkling anchor lights of the boats at rest in Deer Harbor.
Maggie's Getaway sits high above our private 300' wide deep water Deer Harbor shoreline on 3 ½ acres with ample manicured lawns. Soak in the sun, clean air, and sweeping views from the bird-filled gardens. Keep toasty around the outdoor campfire while watching for Northern Lights under the star-filled sky at night. Hike through our private 110 acre wildlife preserve and wild natural organic farm at the heart of Deer Harbor and look for Great Blue Heron, Bald and Golden Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, Osprey, River Otters, Raccoons, Black Tailed Deer, and a host of other San Juan Islands wildlife. A birders’ delight!
With this Orcas Island accommodation you may actually want to prepare your own meals. Whether you like to cook your own crab, barbeque your own salmon, steaks or like to cook hot dogs over the open fire you will like the west side of Maggie's outdoor cooking area and campfire pit. Perhaps you are preparing an anniversary dinner or hosting a small party or wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. There is enough room in our kitchen for many cooks and helpers. With four sinks spread over three separate areas there is plenty room to prepare a festive gourmet meal. Serve on the east deck, the west yard picnic area, or the dining room all with spectacular water views.
The Deer Harbor area of Orcas Island enjoys some of the nicest weather these 'banana belt' San Juan Islands offer---lots of sun and little rainfall! Sunny Deer Harbor is a hub of San Juan Islands marine activity, with fishing, whale-watching for Orca and Minke whales, sea kayaking, boat rentals and sailing charters available, as well as moorage facilities for your own boat.

Kindly hostess is eager to help. Lovely harbor overlook from hill; no easy water access. Old House with lovely lines needs some care and repair. Prevalent cobwebs and mold. Multiple tripping hazards.Kitchen was well stocked

We had an amazing time staying in Deer Harbor. The location was wonderful. The house could definitely use some maintenance and some kitchen items. With that said, if you can look past the minor inconveniences this place is a great place to stay.

Wonderful stay at what felt like home away from home. The views were great, the location perfect and the home felt like Grandma's where you just feel right at home. Thanks for sharing this amazing space with us. We can't wait to come back.

We had such a wonderful time at Maggie’s Getaway. The house is beautifully set on the harbor and exudes a loving home. Meg and Bob Connor were terrific hosts! Unfortunately we had to leave a day earlier than expected but hope to come again soon for even longer! Our kids are already asking to return. Thanks again for a great stay on Orcas!

We really enjoyed the beautiful view from the front porch, were made to feel very welcome and had a very relaxing stay. Thank you!

This sweet, 1930s home is easy to settle into, and sets the stage for a comfortable and relaxing vacation. The view of Deer Harbor from the living room and bedroom is spectacular. The hosts are thoughtful and generous in welcoming guests to explore their 100+ acre property. You’ll never want to leave!

Although the property is dated, it has everything we need. The view is unbelievable and we love the location.

The house, deck, and hot tub are in very bad shape. The paint is peeling inside and out, and it reeks of dog urine. There were holes in the walls and visible damage throughout. There was one smoke detector in the back of the house and evidence where others existed but had been removed. The doors had no real locks just slide latches at the top of the exterior doors. We had some trouble getting a couple of these open, which would be a serious problem in an emergency. There were no curtains in the main part of the house, so there was no privacy. The house was very grimey, covered in cobwebs, and had visible mouse droppings in the bathroom, kitchen, and everywhere in the basement. There were stains all over the bathroom walls, mold growing in the tub and in many corners of the house. The kitchen shelves were covered in grease from cooking and not being cleaned. Hair and dirt in the silverware drawers. The hot tub had a lot of debris in it, including sand, paint chips and pieces of the cover that flaked off. There was a bottle of bleach next to the hot tub and the house instructions indicated that you should pour bleach in if you want to use it. Based on how the tub looked it seems the only cleaning it gets is when bleach is dumped in.
We left a day early because we felt too uncomfortable. The house instructions upon check out were to remove the bed sheets and we found the mattress covered in disgusting stains. I would not recommend staying here it is filthy and unsafe.

No smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, you can see where there supposed to be but were not installed. The electricity failed a couple times, had to flip the breaker for no reason. Mold present. The ceiling shows evidence of water and structural issues from rain. They nailed a canvass over it to hide damage. DIRTY. The walls in bathroom had toothpaste splatters on the walls. The kitchen cupboards were filthy with foot splatter on them. Cobwebs everywhere. Live spiders in bathroom - HUGE one. Bedroom hole in wall covered by tape and piece of paper, ugh. No privacy, there are no curtains on any of the windows so you are on display to everyone. They live right above the house so its like living in a fish bowl. The hot tub was dirty and just had a bucket of bleach sitting next to it. They tell you everything has been cleaned and sanatized prior to arrival but it was not. They give you a laundry list of requirements prior to arrival and departure....its a novel to read and is all a disclaimer stating the place has quirks, but that information is not listed on their VBRO website listing. It was advertised as 3 bedrooms, but really only has three beds. 2 bedrooms available, but you would need to pay additional to have access to the upstairs for more rooms. Only one of the door locks worked and none of the windows locked properly. The only "security" you had was when you where there you could use a small slide bolt. They did not disclose their dogs would be loose. BS

We have yet to make it to this spot! We had to cancel at the last moment and Meg offered over the phone to allow us to re-book this February, using the credit from our canceled trip. However, we haven't heard back yet, and would like to proceed with this offer and check out this lovely looking spot. Please email, Meg! Thank you.

The house was in a great location in proximity to Turtleback hiking areas. The view was great from the house and when we had a minor issue with the heat, the owners were extremely quick to respond to us and have it fixed. Overall it was a great stay.

This place is completely worn down and has been severely neglected for far too long. Very little has been updated for at least 15-20 years, possibly way longer.
There are literally holes in the bathroom floor. Holes in the ceiling that have been boarded over. Cobwebs and spiders in most corners. Dirty, dusty, dingy, faded, and outdated. Bedding is ancient, worn and musty. The beds are absolutely horrific -- worse than camping on the ground on my sleeping pad. We all had terrible sleep and sore backs after two nights. The couch and the arm chairs in the living room were so worn down and missing any cushioning that it was impossible to sit on them for more than 10 minutes without discomfort. The hot tub is so dilapidated and grimy that we didn't dare use it.
There are no blinds, only sheer curtains in one of the bedrooms, so my daughter woke with the sunrise. The deck boards on the wooden deck are so worn down that my daughter got several splinters from them.
This place is a sham and the owners should be ashamed of making money off of this place. It's time for them to either put some money back into it or sell.

We had a great time. We were able to unload at the marina next door, by asking permission from Nick. The house was a great for four adults. We cooked all our meals there, played games and sat in the hot tub. Great location with wonderful views. The dogs were fun too.

Very old house with a very modern large kitchen. Idyllic setting with amazing views! Great place to reconnect with nature and recharge. Enjoyed the birdwatching and watching the wildlife-and the 2 very friendly dogs that came to visit!

The location is just wonderful and the house is really nice. Huge kitchen and comfortable bedrooms. Locating it in the dark can be a challenge. Loved the fire ring and the daily visit from the sweet Sunny.

Maggie’s Manor was perfect for our family of 4. We spent most of our time exploring the island, hiking and boating. It was a great base camp with a huge kitchen to make our meals and a hot tub to warm up and relax in! It has a beautiful view of the harbor. The kids enjoyed walking up the hill to the play set. The dogs do come visit often but are quiet and friendly and the owners asked first before letting them out. The place could use a coat of paint and some updating but nothing that impacted our stay at all. It’s a 15-20 minute easy drive to East Sound where you’ll find restaurants and grocery stores. Meg was very helpful with all of this information before and during our trip. We’d recommend for your next family stay!

We had a lovely time staying at this property on Orcas. The house is very cozy and comfortable. The host family was super quick to help resolve the few house quirks that came up upon our arrival. The property view is stunning. And the small town near by has awesome shops and great food options. We look forward to our next trip to Orcas.

Guests be warned: **You will not be provided with a key to the property, it will remain unlocked.** You will also be met with rudeness. The cleaning requirements at check out are extensive. We also made over a dozen separate trips to the basement to get the furnace rebooted every time it turned off (per the instructions left to guests to do this because their heating system was faulty). We eventually had to contact the owners as it was not working, the outdoor temps were in the low 30's, and we were uncomfortably cold. Really took away from our quality family time.
We received a welcome message that said "The door will be unlocked and the key will be on the table." We arrived, went in with our bags, and searched for a few minutes and didn't see a key. The owners listed their numbers on laminated sheets inside. I texted both cell #'s and received no response. I called the home # and the husband answered and I explained we couldn't find the key. He sighed and said, "Well you're inside the house now, so what's the problem?" I said, "Yes, but when we leave during the day we'd like to lock the house with our stuff inside." He aggressively said, "What do you want me to do come sit inside the house with your stuff while you're out?!" I was shocked he said this and told him no, and again explained I was inquiring about the information that they had sent us. He then told me that they've never locked their house, that I'd misunderstood, or maybe that his wife had sent that message not him. He promptly got off of the phone by saying his wife would call me.
She and I spoke and she went on about how safe it is where they live and I said that regardless of that it is a liability issue for us to not be able to lock up at the place we're renting.
**THIS IS A TOTAL LACK OF TRANSPARENCY TO GUESTS! IF WE HAD BEEN TOLD UP FRONT THAT WE WERE BOOKING A RENTAL THAT WE COULD NOT LOCK (+ fautly heating), WE WOULD NOT HAVE BOOKED IT!**
When you're paying someone hundreds of dollars, locking the door is a basic function, not an optional amenity. Any seasoned traveler knows how commonplace it is to forego a key for keyless entry, but not bring provided a key AT ALL is ludacris.
The views are lovely and there is dog poop all over their yard. They live up the hill and send their dogs down regularly to potty during your stay, but the dogs were not cleaned up after.
The hot tub is nice. BYO shampoo & conditioner, none is provided.

Meg and Bob were excellent to communicate with before and during our stay! They are seasoned professionals and it shows. The house was as described with one minor change (the playground was moved up closer to the main house vs right off the property). The hot tub was a dream! There was tons of space on the property and plenty of room in the kitchen. Oh that view!!!! There are some, but not a lot, of 3 prong outlets, so if you need one I’d suggest barging an adaptor. The bathrooms are older and functional. The downstair’s toilet is so close to the wall it required some creativity for full grown adults. The neighborhood was quiet and there is a solid pizza place on the other side of the marina, A very pleasant stay was had by our whole group. We would happily stay here again.

The Connor's are amazing and welcoming hosts. The property is in a quiet area of the island, perfect for bike rides and wildlife. This huge property has trails all over, including going down to the estuary. Lots of birds and yummy blackberries to snack on. Our favorite part of the house is the deck where we ate breakfast and dinner, but the shady view on the other side of the house was a close second. We rented the entire house, plenty of room for our group of 8 adults. Loved it!

Such a great stay
Our family had a great time at the Manor. The house is spacious and the surrounding area and views were amazing. The hot tub was warm and helped us relax on island time quickly. Daily visits from Sunny and Shep were a delight. the play area is just up the hill and was a hit with our kiddo. We never got to meet the owners in person, but they were very helpful and quick with communication. We would love to stay here again!

Breathtaking view of Deer Harbor
We especially enjoyed the peaceful setting and view of the marina from the hot tub.
We picked up a fresh caught crab and my husband cooked and cleaned it. Hopefully we didn’t leave the house smelling fishy!

Great location, homey vacation house
We only had a short stay at Maggie's, but it was wonderful. The location can't be beat, and the view really is great. Deer Harbor Marina is a short walk away , and Bob and Meg's own property has plenty of interesting walking as well. They live nearby and are friendly, interesting people to talk to, but they aren't "in your lap" unless you want to interact with them. They have two dogs, both of which are very friendly. One of them loves to go on walks with guests, at least if the guests have their own dogs.
The house was very clean and well stocked with kitchen items. I had no problem finding everything we needed for making meals. The beds are comfortable and we found nice warm robes in the closet. The living room and dining room are large and comfortable. The decor is homey with lots of family type touches as though this were some friend or family's house. We loved it. If you prefer a slick, modern style, this isn't it. We did not see the upstairs, as it was only the two of us, so I can't comment on it, but I suspect it is more of the same. We would gladly rent this property again.

Not our scene
This house was not our scene. We had our small dog with us and the owner's dogs just wandered around the outside of the house at any given time which caused stress on our dog. She was barking at the owner's dogs often which stressed us out. Upon arrival, there was a maintenance guy with a hose in the hot tub letting us know he was trying to fix a leak. The hot tub was unusable, with green slime on the filters and dirt in the bottom. The owner did attempt to clean it but it still looked dirty. My husband got in it to try and wipe away the slime on the filter and it was filled with hair. There are specific instructions to add bleach to the water daily as well. We tried to test out the jets but they never came on. I message the owner asking about the jets and never got a response. So, we did not use the hot tub the entire time. This rental was such a disappointment we decided to leave early. We were told we would get a refund for the hot tub issues but have not seen one yet. There are nice views of the water but that's about it. The cobwebs are everywhere too.

Wonderful getaway for nature lovers
We had 3 generations at Maggie's Manor. It's a charming older home, and comfortable for everyone. The house has water views from almost every room. A wonderful hot tub that we could soak in the full moon one evening. A large deck for hanging out in the sunshine. We explored every part of the island we could access. We enjoyed driving to the top of Mt Constitution, the lovely town of Eastsound, stopping in at the Rosario Resort and especially the Orcas Island Pottery on the west side. Meg and Bob take good care of the property and we enjoyed visiting with them on our walk around the area. Their dogs Sunny and Shep were welcoming and eager to play. The description of the house is accurate as it is older but has a new kitchen that is laid out and outfitted well. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it. Orcas Island is a treasure.

Great location with nice views. Watched the full moonrise from the hot tub! The property is impressive -walked by the orchards and rest of conservation land. Meg and Bob are very responsive. The home is older which we found nice. Was easy to cook there and not too far from Eastsound (only 15 minutes from ferry)We would stay here again
