About this house rental
Tucked into the side of a mountain in beautiful Canaan Valley, our little "Ski Hytte" is a true quiet getaway. It is an "unplugged" getaway that focuses on food, family and quality time. The screen distractions are minimal and the cabin games are plentiful.
4WD / AWD vehicles are a must to access the property - especially in the winter months.
On the main floor you will find:
A well-outfitted kitchen with a kitchen island that seats 2. The kitchen has everything from an ice-cream maker to a fondue set as well as all the basics. The dining area has a table that seats as many as 8 and also doubles as a ping-pong table!
2 steps down into the living room you'll find a large fireplace with a comfy couch and a foosball table as well as books, puzzles, board and card games.
Down the hall of the main floor you will find the master bedroom with queen size bed and an ensuite bathroom with shower. Across the hall is the 2nd bedroom with a full size bed and access to the hall bathroom with a tub and shower. Each of the main floor bedrooms have a door to a semi-private deck. Each one with an uninterrupted view of a gorgeous night sky.
On the Basement level you will find:
Down a spiral staircase, is the 3rd bedroom which also doubles as a game room. There is a twin bunkbed, a small futon and a few beanbag chairs for lounging. The one and only TV plays a small selection of DVD's and Wii games, so not completely unplugged! There is a small basket of kids toys and figurines as well as a dartboard.
The 3rd bathroom has a walk-in shower and the washer and dryer is located here as well.
We hope you enjoy our home as much as we do. It is an excellent "base camp" for all of your outdoor adventures in this beautiful corner of West Virginia.

Check in was problematic in that the lock box to front door was across entrance breeze way and didn't see it for awhile at dusk. Tried to contact VRBO and owner with no luck.
Inside looked nice but was a bit cluttered. Didn't go downstairs where the TV is because the stairs looked unstable.
Sheets on the bed were plastically, felt like sleeping on a plastic picnic tablecloth.
porch railing seemed a bit high such that a small dog or small child could slip through, just my opinion
We always bring our own coffee pot and pans so we used very little except for a couple plates and silverware which we hand washed. When we went to check out and put them in the dishwasher to run, discovered the dishwasher was full of dirty encrusted dishes. I guess the cleaning staff doesn't check.
Owner does not provide propane for the grill, if there is some left then you don't have to get a refill.
I mentioned all these issues to the owner but received no response.
Owner does correctly indicate the need for a four wheel drive vehicle. Steep Slope drive is very steep and is comprised of washed out gravel.

We stayed at the cabin for a long weekend over July 4th. The cabin was great and there’s tons to do in the summer - we enjoyed hiking, swimming, exploring Davis and Thomas, and coming back to cook out on the back deck. Hope to come back someday!

Nice stay.

The location is BEAUTIFUL.
This place has everything you need and more to be snowed in. Fireplace, board games, grill, plenty of pots, pans etc.
We lucked out and got 8+ inches of snow over the course of the four nights we were there.
I see other reviews about the place being dirty and I don’t agree.
This place was super clean.
My only complaint(and I’m really being picky here) is maybe have a couple extra pillows for the beds.
I give this place 9 outta 10 stars.
Absolutely would come back.
Fireplace, foosball table, extensive (awesome) collection Of CDs, really made for a magical snow covered time for our spring break vacation. Host communicated well. Loved it. Hill/driveway is pretty steep so definitely make sure you have 4x4.
My Honda AWD HR-V did great out there.
Thank you so much! Can’t wait to come back!

Came to ski but the weather was really rainy, which gave us the opportunity to be very cozy in the house with beautiful views. The kids loved all the games. And we explored Davis. Great location between Davis and skiing. We definitely want to come back. Thank you so much!

Pros: wood burning fireplace, space was perfect for 2 families, kids loved the basement room hangout, well stocked kitchen, close proximity to ski resorts and black water falls
Cons: wasn’t very clean—we found somebody’s underwear in a closet and a dirty sock on the floor, I actually vacuumed and cleaned in the kitchen upon arrival, washer and dryer was was behind a locked door and took multiple messages back and forth with property manager to access it. Sounds like maybe the cleaning person locked the wrong door and put the keys in the wrong place…the property manager always responded but sometimes took a few hours or more and didn’t provide the right information the first few responses, so we didn’t have access to washer and dryer until end of second day. Thankfully this wasn’t a problem though.
All in all, great space for a good price!

Communication with property manager was excellent, and one of the things i always check prior to visiting.
House was as described, and the level of cleaning was as described in some of the other reviews. Not complaining, given the location, but did have to wipe down the kitchen/bathroom counters and fridge prior to use. Plenty of space and the basement area is great for detaching from the kids in the evenings.
We had 8" of snow the first night and it continued most of the next day, but the plowman showed up before 8 so access to/from was not bad, even with the steepness of the hill to the property (YOU NEED 4WD/AWD). Location was great for access to both ski areas and Davis/Thomas.

Overall - we really enjoyed our stay! Such a cute property! Location was so close & convenient to TimberLine Mtn & Canaan Valley Ski Resort. Thankful for the owners who were easily reached & helpful. The garbage disposal went out & they quickly resolved it. It snowed & we were able to add another day. Great to work with!
I will note to really read the description in detail because I thought I read it, but missed that it’s a good way to unplug! We were there for my kids/husband to ski & me to get a break to relax AND during super work weekend hahaha. No one’s fault but my own.
The only thing I wished they had was a washer/dryer. Between kids & wet/messy snow gear I really missed that. Again, so used to it in all our other rentals I didn’t check! Totally my fault!
The only negative I can say is I have to agree that their cleaning service was just ok. Crumbs, dust bunnies and stuff were on the floor. One accent pillow in bedroom smelled like pee. Dishwasher was full of dishes we had to unload. It was NOT horrible by any means. Just, if I had to critic something that would be the only area slightly lacking.
Again, we loved our stay overall & we would likely stay again if we didn’t feel we needed a tv or washer/dryer.
Really enjoy our long weekend family trip!

This is my second visit to this home for my annual cabin getaway w my pups. Perfect location being close to all the parks, resorts and town. In a beautiful gated neighborhood & host is very helpful if needed. Will definitely be returning again! Loveee Davis, WV

A lovely and welcoming cabin, close to all that the area has to offer. We especially appreciated all of the games available!

We enjoyed our short stay in Davis and this house is about what I expected for the price. The house is a little dated and needs a deep cleaning and refresh, but it did look like the pictures. We enjoyed the fireplace, games and cds. The basement rec room is only accessible by a small steep spiral staircase so something to keep in mind if you plan on using that space which we did not.
I would not recommend staying here in the winter months if there has been any sort of weather unless you have winter tires or chains as this home is located at the bottom of a very steep hill in which the hoa does not adequately maintain and thus you will certainly get stuck or need a tow out. Even with two all wheel drive vehicles we got stuck and spent two hours of our morning that we had planned to ski digging out the entire road down to the house in order to get out. Neither the long staircase down to the house nor the driveway were shoveled and were covered in a foot of snow. The host didn’t call me back when I called to inquire about plowing of the street, but was responsive to messages sent through the vrbo app and attempted to help. We have stayed at other cabins in this area multiple times during winter months with snow and never have had any issues like we did on this trip.
Next time we will probably stay at the Canaan state park cabins as they are priced similarly with all the same features of fireplace and kitchen, and are better maintained.

We had a great time at the cabin and really enjoyed the cold and kind of white Christmas. We arrived and about an inch of snow on the ground and really enjoyed playing in it. Also loved the tubing at Canaan Valley as well as a hike in Blackwater Falls.

Was perfect for what we wanted. Great location. Loved the fireplace!

The cabin - house is very modern with all amenities. Very clean and specious. The location is close to all the activities and trails. We had a good relaxing vacation time.

This "hiking hytte" is in a great location for exploring all that Canaan Valley and the surrounding area has to offer. We enjoyed our stay and the house was comfortable. Hosts were flexible with scheduling when our plans changed.
You might consider adding a desk or small table and chair to one of the bedrooms for guests who are working remotely, as we were. Also, it would be good to plan on upgrading the mattresses.
4.8
House was great needs some updates beds where very firm would be nice if there was a tv upstairs as some people in our group had a hard time going down the spiral staircase and the downstairs was very hot for kids to sleep
4.8
This house was a great base camp for a week of exploring the Canaan Valley. The house has beautiful natural light, lots of deck space, and cozy sleeping spaces. We LOVED the well-stocked kitchen. We had every pot/pan/tool imaginable for making some great food.

Over. all the property is in a very good location to all forms of recreation. The amenities are ample even for an extended stay. Interesting Music selections on CD, games ect. Radio reception is limited do to the Mts still Wifi worked fine. Books on hand also have some good local info and history. Pleasant interior and for the most part very comfy surroundings. At some point mattresses might need an upgrade. The Spiral staircase to the lower level is limiting. Parking area could use a bit more thought. Beyond that had a great time thanks so much !

Host was great. Liked this house, however, be aware that you have to carry your luggage down steps from parking area, which is common is ski areas. These outside steps were good, not steep, but no handrail. There is a spiral metal staircase that leads to third downstairs bedroom/laundry/ play area. This staircase would not be suitable for small children or dogs. Can be accessed from outside, but no walkway to get there, have to walk through grass. Not a big deal in the summer months. House does not have a cable TV, TV can be used with dvds, this TV is downstairs. Didn't miss the TV !

We had a great time in this house. Well-furnished kitchen. Nice porches. Good location for Canaan Valley, Blackwater Falls, or Dolly Sods.
4.8
The main floor of this house is fantastic and we enjoyed the decks for stargazing, the fireplace, lovely kitchen, and foosball. Anyone planning on having small children stay in the lower level bunk room should be aware it is accessed by a spiral metal staircase and is under partial renovation as of the date of our stay (March 2023). This was a bit of a surprise. We also unfortunately had a snafu with the cleaning service before our arrival and had to wash all the bedding and towels the evening we arrived. We appreciated the apology for the error.

We arrived at our property around 5:00pm on our check-in day. Deep snow covered steps approximately 4-6" on the deck & walkways to the house that we had to shovel ourselves. House was not cleaned! Kitchen counters and stove had food residue, old food and drink in fridge, dishwasher loaded with dirty dishes, blue bags of dirty laundry sitting on both upstairs bedroom beds, beds not made, no toilet paper, bathrooms had opened/used bars of soap, shampoos, brown substance caked on the bottom of the main bathroom.
I immediately contacted Veronica thru VRBO and gave her my cell #. She responded by text on VRBO promptly stating she would contact the cleaning service, sorry for the inconvenience and they would get it straightened up.
We responded that we would leave in order for them to clean. The cleaning service contacted us about 45 minutes later stating they would be up shortly they didn't think check-in was until Friday. So now over 2 hours later we tried to contact 'Sheena' to find out where we were in this process...NO RESPONSE.! We had the dogs in the car, food, clothing, etc to be unloaded so we tried to message Veronica, the owner....NO RESPONSE!
We took it upon ourselves since now it was dark, we are now 2 1/2 hours since we arrived, to head back to the house.
The cleaning lady was still there and said she had just finished. We were waiting for her to leave so that we could get the dogs and our things unloaded.
When we came in it was evident that nothing was really done other than the beds were made from the same sheets and comforters that were in the blue bags when we arrived, toilet paper was now on the rolls, but toilets, showers, etc still had the used soap and gross brown stains on the shower floor! The old food and drinks were still in the fridge and the dishwasher still full of dirty dishes!!!!!
Soooo.....we again attempted to message Veronica, the owner, that the cleaning had obviously not been done bc we took pictures when we 1st arrived and nothing had changed! We expressed our disappointment thru the VRBO message in the house and conditions and that we have basically lost our 1st night bc we are unable to cook the food we brought with us until we washed all of the dishes and we also needed to do a massive cleaning in the bathrooms! NO RESPONSE!
Throughout our stay of 3 nights we never heard back from the owner! We were open and understanding at FIRST to have the situation fixed, but NO RESPONSE left us frustrated and UNHAPPY!

Plenty of space for 2 adults and 4 kids. Close to skiing. Enjoyed the fireplace, wii and board games. Would stay again

Loved the cabin! We had some snow which made it even better! It was a nice place to stay for peace and quiet. My mom, sister, and I went up for a few days. Would definitely go back!

We had a lovely fall visit in beautiful Canaan Valley. The cabin was convenient to Davis and the Valley, was roomy and had multiple decks to enjoy the fall outdoors. The kitchen was well stocked (waffle iron eg) and the sunken living room had a fireplace and a large soccer table for kids and family fun.

We enjoyed our stay very much. The property is in a beautiful neighborhood with easy access to everything the area has to offer. Communication with the owner was great and the check-in and check-out process was easy. Highly recommend.

The road going down to this house is steep and narrow . The house was dirty , cob webs and dust everywhere . Looks like they spot clean , there was even soap left in one of the showers floor . 2 beds was made others was not . We had to unload the dishwasher so we could put our dirty dishes in . I have never stayed at a place where u have to strip the beds and take out the trash before you leave . We would not stay at this house again . Cleaning needs to be addressed .

A great cabin in the woods
No street sign so we toured the entire development before finding the house. Such a nice cabin, fun decor - a great mix of modern and vintage Nordic style. Perfect base for our family hiking vacation, even trails right up the street.

This is a wonderfully located property and a great place to stay. We had a glitch at check-in that the owner took care of expeditiously. Turns out the cleaners mixed up our check-in date so it took some communication to get the place cleaned up and the beds made - but it happened quickly and we were very happy. May is a great time to visit this part of the world and we were very comfortable and happy to be staying at this property. Veronica has all the essentials (and none of the "last tenants left this stuff hanging around") in the house.
Recommend this for any season but winter - as others have noted, you really need a 4-wheel drive to access this property in the snow.
My sister and I had a terrific time hiking nearby and coming back to enjoy the amenities of this property.

Thanks so much for making our vacation to WV so wonderful
