About this cottage rental
Welcome! Cappie, star of two episodes of Discovery Channel's Building-Off-The-Grid and co-host of Magnolia Network’s Building Outside the Lines, built this adorable off-grid cottage as his own, but now you have the opportunity to stay!
This beautiful 3-acre property, once the Swisher Farm, is today a working homestead, with dozens of chickens and a large garden. This quiet oasis is located within the city of Spearfish.
This cottage is handmade, from the bespoke front door to the custom 2-headed shower. We know you'll appreciate the details!

Loved the unique & artistic, architectural design & flare of this little customized house, located in Spearfish, SD! This was our first time to stay in a ‘self-sustaining’ property. Definitely one-of-a-kind! Am completely unfamiliar regarding sawdust-composting toilets, but this feature was a very manageable. Truly appreciated the attention to details & the craftsmanship in this space!
This house is nestled in a quiet location adjacent to a small creek & an open field, yet is conveniently located near Spearfish, as well as a short drive to Deadwood or Sturgis. Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse & Custer State Park are also an easy day trip from this location. So, it’s a great place for 2 people to stay! Can highly recommend it!

A very unique property, it was a real treat, staying there. It was also a pleasure meeting the owner and visiting with him. Hopefully sometime in the future, I’ll be able to stay there again.

We loved everything about this home, from its serene surroundings, sustainability and cool factor. One night wasn’t enough but we were so happy we got to experience it. We saw a huge buck right outside the bedroom window and loved the thrill of jumping into the cold plunge pool.
When in town, be sure to eat ice cream at Leone’s!

Very peaceful location. House was clean. Has large yard and would be great area to sit outside at night on a summer night. Hosts were attentive and prompt when we requested additional firewood for the wood burning stove. Had four fawns visit one evening. Spent all waking hours sight seeing and visiting attractions. If you have not experienced a self recycling toilet, you may be surprised. But I must say, due to the way the toilet vents there is absolutely no odor. The bed and toilet sit high, so those that are elderly or have physical limitations may find getting in bed or on the toilet a little challenging. None the less, we enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

All instructions were spot on. The address was very easy to find. We meet the owner during the stay. He was very friendly. He made sure we had everything we needed and encouraged us to look around the 3 acre property. On our stay we used the sauna and the cold plunge. I highly recommended both.
My family and I highly recommend staying at the property.

My wife and I were out for a visit to see our new grandchild, but our trip was cut short by weather and so I'm offering this review after only one night's stay.
This property is like visiting one of the "wonders of the world". The engineering that went into the design and construction of this property in trying to make it Earth friendly is amazing.
Be ready to step back in time. "Off the Grid" is more than a description; it's a warning. The same concepts that make this property such an endearing and novel stay are the same things that will also require you to remember that there are certain expected (but possibly forgotten) things that will require you to do more than push a button to get it done.
I highly recommend this property, but make good use of your hostess in determining if it's right for you before booking. (She's quite nice and very helpful). It's not for just anyone IMHO.
Cheers!

Very quiet property located in a neighborhood.

We stayed here while in town for a wedding. The cabin is very beautiful, cozy, and in a convenient location to town. It was a perfect place to unwind for a few nights among all the family activities. We particularly enjoyed the comfy living room, the views, and the tree house!
A small note for those considering this property: the creekside hot tub shown in the listing does not appear to exist anymore, but a very cool looking wood-fired sauna is available instead. Additionally, this cabin would not be good for anyone with mobility issues, as the bed and composting toilet are quite high off the ground. Otherwise, this place is a lovely little spot for a getaway!

My husband & I had a short stay as we were splitting our drive to a week long vacation in Montana. This home/property is so cute & the beautiful scenery is to die for. We saw many deer & other wildlife wondering the property. It was a great stay & I highly recommend!

This is a great quiet spot…..perfect location secluded and private. Candace had great prompt communication. Definitely would book this again in a heartbeat.

This property is in great condition, but is not for people with mobility issues. The bed and toilet require a step stool to use and the bed is against a wall. You have to crawl over the other person to get out. But, the bed is very comfortable. Also, no bedside table (difficult if you use a CPAP). There are no doors on the bathroom or bedroom. Not a big problem for us, but might be for some. The curtains don't block any light. The location is great. Very quiet and close to a walking path. Nice place, but not our cup of tea.

This property was unique and whimsicle. The cobb house was so fun but the part we enjoyed the most was the tub in the creek and the swing right by it. It's where my friend and I spent the most time. Easeful check in, clean space. Don't let the toilet scare you. It works just fine and doesn’t smell one bit! Would definitely stay again!

Oh my gosh!! This property was amazing… I only stayed one night but wish I stayed longer. Me and my friend really enjoyed the sauna along with the beautiful land. The owners were extremely friendly! When I come back to the hills I will definitely be staying here again.

Among the most unique homes we’ve ever stayed at among VRBO properties. Best served for a couple. Could be tough for a family. Having a bicycle is a plus to get around. A good destination to set up HQ and day trip to Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Black Hills among other vacation-worthy spots.
To put things in perspective, watch online videos of the owner, an “off grid builder”. The greatest features of this home are in its architecture and engineering—simple medieval technology meets modern tech. You can really unwind here. My favorite spot is the watering hole beneath the spaceship treehouse (RECOMMENDATION: Go through Colorado before you arrive here).
NOTE: This location is described as off-the grid. This is true. The entire property is self-sustaining. But you’re not necessarily off the grid—as in out in the middle of no where. Thank God, you’re actually within walking distance of at least two breweries.

I had knee replacement surgery the next day, & the doctors stress CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. The toilet was VERY tall with only a small step stool (not good for someone with a bad knee). It also required compost to be added then you crank the handle like you're starting a model T. The flies just kept coming out of the toilet. It was gross. The bed was also huge coming up to my husband's waist. The places was clean but felt dirty bc of the toilet & flies. If we were camping, I'd expect something like this, but we weren't. We were in town!!

Unique Fun Stay
We really loved our stay at this one-of-a-kind property. It's perfect for a couple, but definitely intimate. One unique feature is that there are no doors on the bathroom or the bedroom. The walls also don't go all the way to the ceiling. Just something to keep in mind as I can imagine this lack of privacy may bother some guests. We loved wondering the property and firing up the wood stove. We'd definitely stay here again if we're ever passing though.

Off Grid and Awesome
The property is unique and an experience all on it's own. It was fun wandering thru the home and seeing all the details. We lit the stove at night for heat but only needed once. The home retains the warmth. It was an enjoyable stay for us both.

Enjoyable stay
We only stayed one night, but it was very enjoyable. Being of the Prepper persuasion we were interested in the workings of the house. It was very warm and snug even though the temperature was dipping toward freezing. The kitchen is a great size and I love the built in drain board. It is a well thought out house, but could use a door on the bathroom and we frankly didn’t fit into the kitchen chairs, but that’s a personal problem. Very comfy bed and a lovely quiet neighborhood.

Relaxing country setting in town
This was one of the most relaxing rentals we have stayed in. The location was convenient to restaurants, shopping and campus but it felt like we were miles out of town. Cappie was a terrific host. He helped our BHSU kids with the zip line and the we enjoyed experiencing off grid living. It as both educational and comfortable.

Ok stay
Everything was good. There were 2 things we didn't like. One was the type of toliet. You don't flush it. You do #2 and sprinkle saw dust on it. Then the 2nd was You couldn't use the air conditioner after 3pm because the house ran on solar and the battery would run out so sleeping was miserable. They also only left 1/2 roll of toilet paper.

Proof that solar works!
We appreciate Emily’s quick responses to our questions about the property before we made the reservation. Her communication was always prompt and thorough so we could book, and check into the property.
We also met the property owner Cappie and enjoyed his tour of the beautiful grounds outside. He also showed us all the unique features of the house. We recommend a tour for guests new to the property. Enjoyed learning about the history of the home, design, and construction. Even though the house is off the electric grid we had all the conveniences of home. There was plenty of electricity from the solar panels and batteries to power the air conditioning, refrigerator, TV and WiFi and charge all of our devices. It was very interesting to see a solar system in action.

Wonderful!
Great experience! Emily was a wonderful host. She greeted us when we arrived and showed us all the features of the house and property. The property is lovely. We loved visiting with the chickens and the refreshing dip in the creek after a really, really hot day. The off-the-grid living was amazing to experience. Why don’t we all do this????

Comfortable and unique
This was an excellent place to say. Super unique and had so many hidden perks. Cappie was really friendly and accommodating, he had excellent suggestions of cool places to visit. We will definitely stay here again in the future.

Incredible homestead
I was looking for something a bit off the grid to allow us to relax and not be right next to another place, and this was perfect! The place has just what you need plus more with the natural creek rolling through. I was a bit nervous with the compost toilet as it was our first time using, but zero issue with smell. One of our favorite experiences was we did one final walk around before leaving and ran into Jared, had some great laughs and asked us if we wanted to go on the zip line, which of course we did! Great staff, great property, great experience!

Lovely weekend in Spearfish
This house was so beautiful! My boyfriend and I enjoyed walking around the property to see the different environmentally-conscious features, as well as the treehouse and creek right outside. We thoroughly enjoyed the quaint, peaceful, sustainable home and property. The house is in the perfect location right within Spearfish and was so unique. The staff was attentive, courteous, and resourceful. This would definitely be a location that we would come back to in the future. Thank you so much for an amazing stay!
