Cuesta Serena get lots of stuff right, but not everything. The location, view, patio, gardens, room and a lot of the food is really wonderful. Breakfast and 3 course dinners are included and were really delicious and varied. Dinner is chosen from a set menu of two options and breakfast there is around 8 options.
It's a very relaxing space where lounging away hours is very easy. Special mention for the house dog, Max who is lovely! And we also really appreciated the pool and communal spaces which were thoughtfully decorated and very cosy. We also had an issue with one of our excusions while we were there and Eva, one of the assistants, was very friendly and accommodating about handling it with us and gave us a discount after the tour serivce wasn't up to scratch.
The hotel itself is a little overpriced, in particular when compared to other hotels in Peru in a similar range. And my review is in this context. But more importantly the tours and excursions are very overpriced. As this hotel is out of town, you are reliant on the tours and excursions they offer unles you want a lot of traipsing back and forth to Huaraz (a 25 minute taxi drive away). I couldn't find any information about the tour prices on their website beforehand and so was pretty shocked to find out they were 185 USD for a couple to do almost anything on the list. For context, we paid about 100 USD for BOTH our Machu Picchu entrance tickets and an english-speaking guide. The excursions arranged by the hotel include transport, a very nice packed lunch and also national park entrance (no more than 10 USD) but very little else, and as the journey to most of the sights is more than 2 hours each way, you are mostly paying to sit in a car for 4-5 hours with 2-3 hours at the location. I understood the distances involved before coming and so wasn't surprised or annoyed about that, but did really feel that 185 USD was very steep for what was involved. Additionally they had been described to us as private 'tours' and so I had assumed they would be a bit more guided but really it was just a Spanish-speaking driver doing most of the legwork (we speak a fair bit of spanish so this wasn't an issue for us but if you didn't and you were paying that much, I think you would be disappointed, we noticed later that an english speaking guide would have been another 70 USD, very expensive).
Aside from the tours, in general the service and staffing at the hotel was a little underwhelming. For half of our 4 day stay there was a helpful english speaker on site, but for the remaining there was only mostly Spanish-speaking serving/kitchen staff, the service was passive and often slow.

A stunning property located 40 minutes outside of Huaraz - the ideal place to relax. Every part of the property was stunning! And the staff were incredibly attentive to detail. Highly recommend!
Food was very good but catered more towards Americans, would have been great to sample more local Peruvian foods.
3.5
The place is well located and maintained, beautiful views and surroundings.
Good swimming pool.
Superior Quadruple Room for 3 of us was prepared as two single beds (fits only for one person) and one mattress on the floor for the third person, who was me. I got a cold during the night because of the cold air came from the huge closed window.
For that value of money this "Superior Quadruple Room" is unacceptable.
Lack of dishes in the restaurant menu.
All in all - great overrated place.
