About this house rental
Looking to get away from it all and ride into the sunset? Consider your next vacation at Painted Hills Retreat! The entire house is nestled in 200+ acres of woods, pastures, spring fed creeks and hills. With several hiking trails and streams, your stress will melt away.
The space
Settle into the 5-bedroom/3 ½ bath with in-ground swimming pool and 4-6 person hot tub. Or if you are hungry, start cooking in the kitchen/dining room, which boasts a 20-foot tall antique mirror and large dining table seating 14 people and a three bar stool breakfast bar. Or better yet, grill your food under the 8’ porch and enjoy your meal under the Wisteria covered pergola by the pool. Unwind the rest of your evening by reading one of our many books and cozy reading vignettes. If you’ve brought your gaming system, play up stairs on the 2-3 monitor/TV screens in the gaming/exercise room. Or if you just want to crawl off to bed, each bedroom has a smart TV, so bring you I’d and passwords for streaming your own TV shows.
Start the next morning after fixing your breakfast, and handling some office work in the loft office, pack a lunch and head off to explore the property... Enjoy the trails and scenery with ridge views. Make sure to stop by and see the 600 year old White Oak Tree, considered to be the largest in the state of Alabama! When you are ready for your picnic, find the 100 year old restored Old Corn Crib and eat at the covered table while listening to the spring fed stream babble under your feet and enjoy the 130+ year old remnants of the Old Home Place. Make sure to take time to fish in the fish-and-release pond.
Or, to continue your Outdoor experience, drive 3 miles up to the quaint town of Mentone. While you are there checkout the artisan craft stores or grab a snack at one of the several adorable restaurants. Don’t forget to take in the views from the brow! Then, continue on the scenic drive a top the brow of Look Out Mountain heading toward the breathtaking Desoto Falls. If you’ve made reservations for renting a canoe or kayak, or repelling you are close by! If not, continue along the brow to Desoto State Park and try your hand at Zip Lining. If you’re not feeling that adventurous, enjoy the many beautiful walking/hiking trails that our state park has. Don’t forget to drive the drive around Little River Canyon National Preserve, which is called The Little Grand Canyon of the East. Or again…plan an invigorating hike.
Should it be raining on your trip, there are a lot of undiscovered things and places to enjoy in this Southern end part of the Appalachian Mountains.
But if your stay is to enjoy a bonfire, or a fun dip in the pool or a relaxing soak in the hot tub, you've come to the right place!

We had a great time. The pool was a great asset. The dining room table seats 14 people. It was great to all eat together. Wal Mart delivers to the house which was a huge help. The hosts were super helpful and attentive to our needs. The coffee pot was not working and they had us a new one within 30 minutes! Dawn also had the fixings for ice cream sundaes which was a "sweet" gesture.

Great accommodations for our group of 10. (infant to grandparent ages) Large gathering spaces, big dining table, were perfect! There is a high chair which was perfect! Also plenty of space to be alone if you wanted to.
It is a farm so there was roaming space, fishing, animals, etc and a front porch swing to sit with coffee.
The leaves were beautiful.
Best compliment- all of the family said “let’s make this an annual trip” !
The host was very attentive and welcoming!
Bonus- hot tub was wonderful! Hoped for a golf cart( it was broken) but we did fine without it.
All the parks and sites were close and easy to get to. Great location.
Note-Not many small children toys or games or plastic plates , cups /we brought our own .
We did not have any bugs but they might have been an issue in the summer as the porch screens were pretty tattered.

We had an amazing trip , The cabin is beautiful and laid out perfect for a large group to give each family their own privacy sleeping quarters . We loved the property, pool , hot tub and even Ike - the property German Shepherd ♥️ The Kelly family will definitely be back !

The biggest problem that was not mentioned until time for our vacation was the pool pump was broken, the liner was rotten and they couldn’t vacuum it because destroy the liner more. I told them the pool was the main reason we booked with them. No offer of any money back and my Grandson got a ear infection that I’m sure was from the dirty water. Beware of dishonesty.

This was our second time, and we enjoyed the house very much. With the pool and hot tub, such a relaxing stay. Only place we've been where we could all eat together in the dining room, which was a plus.

This was the perfect location for our family to enjoy time together! All 13 of us from age 3 to 63 had the greatest time! The house and property was even more beautiful than the pictures and the hosts have provided everything needed for a great stay! We swam, fished, hiked, played front yard football and wiffle ball, shot baskets, stayed up late and slept great n the comfortable beds, grilled some awesome meals and had room for all! We hope to return! Thank you to the Wampler’s for being such gracious hosts!

I stayed with my youth group here for a few days for a Catholic retreat. The place was perfect! Plenty of room to go out and have some alone time of group time. The teens loves the animals and visiting " Ike". The pool was a bonus after a long day out hiking.
It was a pain for the girls to have to shower downstairs, since the part they stayed in did not have a shower. We had some problems with the dishwasher, but it was fixable with a towel for the leak. The home is well stocked. Everything you need is there! Bring firewood for the fire pit and I would suggest you bring your groceries in from Fort Payne. There isn't a grocery store near I would recommend this place for anyone with large families wanting to get away for nature or just to reset from life.

Our family spent 3 great days at Painted Hills and exploring the area. The property was better than advertised. We enjoyed learning the history of the place and being able to get out and explore the property. Will be back one day.

Wonderful property! We had so much fun exploring the acreage and fishing in the pond.

It was a wonderful place for our whole family to enjoy spending time together. Everyone loved the pool & hot tub. Great fun for the kids riding around on the golf cart (with one of the dad's driving). All said they wanted to go back to the same place next year.
The property managers were very easy to communicate with and quickly responsive to any question. So helpful in making our stay a good one.

Secluded family getaway
Our family truly enjoyed this house. It was secluded with nice views. The pool was clean and a great size. It was really hot so we didn't use the hot tub but would be great during a different season. Very large dining room table for 11 people at eat meal. We had plenty of room and never felt crowded in the house. The kids really enjoyed going fishing and getting to see the horses and long horns.

A time to gather to celebrate the marriage of Jean Joseph and Hannah
We were amazed at the kindness, Ike's gentle great demeanor and the joy this place brought us. Thanks to all!

Location was somewhat remote and well off highway, but it was very restful and quiet location. House had lots of room for family to gather and seating was very comfortable. Master bedroom was downstairs but other bedrooms are upstairs. House was ready for us and check out was easy.
