I’ve been to several different onsen in Japan and this is THE WORST one.
Atmosphere was good from outside but as soon as I try to walk in into to my room which was located on 1st fl it started to smell in the hallway like a sewer. I can see they were trying to cover ip with somekind of aroma.
Once I walked in to my checked room #100
It stinked like pee all over the room. They had air purifiers that made worst so we turned it off. Went to dinner and came back but still had the stinkyness in the bathroom. Not to mention Broken hanksink faucet too.
Went to front desk and complaint to change room but they refused to because they were booked completely, only taking about aroma aroma…
Spent well enough $550 / night fir the worst ever onsen and got treated this way.
DO NOT RECOMMEND to this onsen. I say again DO NOT RECOMMEND.

I loved the hot onset tab in the room. Very relaxing.

Amazing experience! Traditional Japanese Ryokan with a public, private and in-room baths, you feel in another world in this resort. The staff were second to none - always on hand to help you, answer any questions you have, and trying to speak English to help you.
And the food was special. If you’re looking for traditional kiseki, then this would be it - made with local ingredients, colourful and special, it is a taste sensation, with a different menu each night too. You can also order either a Japanese or a western breakfast if it’s too much traditional food for you!
An overall unforgettable, out of this world experience that you would never get elsewhere. Highly recommended!

This was a lovely and traditional Ryokan. The staff were lovely. Some aspects of the food were amazing and other didn’t quite hit the spot. For example you couldn’t get a coffee with breakfast (even if you chose Western style). The property was a bit “tired” and could do with a facelift especially for the price they charge.

What an amazing experience and certainly the highlight of our trip. We booked the private onsen room and it was heaven.
Staff were polite and helpful, the food expreience is was unforgettable and the service was amazing.
Beautiful surrounding area that we were able to walk around and was also taken on a firefly sighting tour in the evening.
Would recommend to everyone I brag to haha.

Great property with a lovely private onsen in the room. Both dinner and breakfast services were incredible with great presentation and very friendly staff. Staff arranged a firefly tour the night there as well which was extra special and unexpected. Would stay again next time in Hakone!

An hotel in the style of a traditional Ryokan, absolutely everything about Mikawaya was exceptional. The decor, rooms, public onsen, meals and staff were amazing.
Although it is a little out of the way and up an incline, there are multiple frequent transport options and even a shuttle bus which can take you back and forth from Gora Station. When it was chucking it down with rain this was very convenient.
The room was very spacious, comfortable and had all the amenities you could want.
The staff were delightful, friendly, polite and helpful.
Oh and the food. You need to come here just to experience the food.

Staying here was such an enjoyable, relaxing, and special experience. The breakfast and dinner kaiseki were delicious and allowed us to try a variety of Japanese dishes. It's a lot of food so come to each meal hungry. All the staff we interacted with were kind and very helpful. The indoor and outdoor onsen was the perfect way to unwind after long days exploring the Hakone area. It's also right across from the Horai-en Hakone bus stop if using the Hakone free pass to get around. If you're looking for a romantic and relaxing mountain retreat, this is a great place for you!

We did not know that our room would have only an outside shower, and it was about 40°, so we could not use the shower at all! Room was not genuine ryokan, as we had beds rather than futon and we had to go to a dining area for our meals. It might be better to stay in a room with a shared bathroom because those are in the older part of the hotel.
Stinked odor of mold everywhere in the hotel Samiel were OK, but everything else was substandard.
We were very excited about this day, which was our last evening in Japan, and it was a huge disappointment. The glowing reviews I read online must be from people who don't know what to expect at a traditional Japanese in

Beautiful 300 year old Japanese home, amazing staff who take care of their guests. The staff are able to speak English and take note of your dietary needs. We opted for the room with an open air bath and it was totally worth it! It's not too hard to get to from Tokyo as well, just one train and a direct bus ride.

Had a very nice stay here - the private onsen in our room was incredible. The hotel staff were all extremely friendly and helpful as well. The meals were huge and very authentic. We could walk to the open air museum and around the area.

Lovely quiet getaway at this historic ryokan. It is over 140 years old and is still going strong with its delightful staff and beautiful natural hot springs. They offer a room with a personal hot spring which is the one we stayed in. Have to say would visit again. If you plan on ordering the dinner or breakfast be advised the portions are enormous but delicious.

The staff is amazing. It’s away from the busyness but it’s easy to take transportation to be anywhere. The room is clean and comfortable. I had a wonderful time there, definitely want to go back again.

I had a fabulous experience with my senior mom at this ryokan. I stayed a room with its own open air private onsen. This property is old, I believe it has been over 100 years but it is being kept very clean. Every staff was very kind and helpful. They provided extra helps to assist my mom who is partially disabled due to her bad knees. I thank every staff who were very friendly and kind. I will definitely stay here again for next Hakone vacation.

The moment we stepped into the beautiful Mikawaya Ryokan, we felt so welcomed and relaxed. My friend and I stayed in a standard room with two large single beds/thick futons. The Japanese-style room itself was very comfortable, large and clean with the entry way & washroom, sleeping area, living room, and balcony separated by sliding doors. All the staff members - from reception to restaurant - were so nice and very helpful. I really appreciated the effort and care the staff took with my dietary requirements. All of my meals were delightful. Thank you so much :) The breakfast and dinner that they served was top quality and gorgeous! We also enjoyed the wonderful indoor and outdoor onsen; the little museum within the ryokan; and the beautiful grounds and setting of the ryokan. We truly had a wonderful experience in this magical and historical place. Some people may think it's a difficult place to get to from Hakone-Yumoto station, but it's really quite easy to get to. If you take the bus from the station, there is a bus stop across the ryokan. If you take the train from Hakone-Yumoto stn, get off at Gora stn and take the shuttle bus that stops at several accommodation, including this ryokan (you have to check the time of the last shuttle, though), or you can take the taxi, but I recommend bus or train as it's easy. I highly recommend Mikawaya Ryokan for top service, top traditional Japanese-style accommodation, the beautiful food they serve, and relaxing, quiet environment.

We had a great stay, the staff were so lovely and helpful even with limited English. The food was amazing. We were on half board, as we stayed 3 nights we got different dinner and breakfast each day. So much delicious food beautifully presented.
We loved the private Onsen - one of the highlights of the stay.

We were surprised when our Host Tina spoke spanish! That was awesome and we were glad because alot of Latino country residents dream of traveling to Japan. She made us feel welcomed and gave the experience an A !
Thank you Tina!

A lovely traditional ryokan in Hakone. Fantastic food with the half board booking - a full Japanese evening meal and breakfast. The Osen was very relaxing.
We caught the free hotel shuttle bus several times to the Gora train station for various site-seeing adventures. I would highly recommend staying at the Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan.

Everything was amazing. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the dinners and breakfasts were unbelievable and the rooms were lovely. Lots of nice hiking roads and trails nearby too.

Great hotel for couples who want a real Japanese experience. You wear kimonos at all times including for the amazing dinners. Rooms are nice but old fashioned. Many face the road but have beautiful views of the hills. Staff are amazing and on par w the Tokyo Kimpton. Easy to get around w a shuttle bus to Gora for the cable car to the lake and the train to Odawara. We choose to take the Z bus from Odawara which drops you off in front of the hotel- stop 139. Fare is 940 yen buy driver will only give change for notes of a 1000 yen or less. Onsen is basic and maybe the most disappointing part of the hotel. Two small pools- one inside and one outside. There are no choices on the set meal package and it is catered to the Japanese so if you dislike fish be warned! Overall a great experience

The place was located directly in front of the bus stop and had a beautiful garden with a historic 140-year-old structure. We booked a lovely room with private onsen with a lovely view. Dinner was great with amazing service, would come back if I had the chance.

Hands down the most beautiful vacation stay I have ever and maybe will ever experience. It’s worth it to spring for the room with the private onsen, as well as the half board meals. They are generous with servings and two meals per day was more than enough for us. It felt so special dining in such a beautiful environment, and getting to try so many carefully prepared foods.
The property itself is beautiful, well-situated near bus stops, and the staff was a pleasure to interact with. We will definitely be staying here again.
