We wanted a relaxing and peaceful holiday with a pool and view and good service. This hotel didn’t disappoint us.
There are only six rooms so the service was personal and exceptional.
The hotel is located at the quieter end of the Hikkadawa stretch of beach which suited us. The livelier bars and hotels were only a short walk away too.
There are buses every five minutes just outside that took us to the Tsunami museum one day and Galle Fort another for about 50p each, each way. Great fun and very easy to do.
The hotel chef was eager to please and show off his skills and we loved the food there. Some meals had to be ordered in advance and some took a while to come as they are all freshly cooked to order. No mass menu from freezer to microwave here!
We can highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants an authentic Sri Lankan service and not a big 5* chain that could be anywhere in the world.

Perfect location on beach, and only a few rooms at hotel meant we had pool area to ourselves a lot of the time and was very tranquil, great after a hectic few days travelling around Sri Lanka. Short walk along beach for nice beach bars, or take a tut tut into centre of town.

Do try the Sri Lankan breakfast that you have to order the day before - really good food..

Roman Beach is the absolute boutique gem of Hikkaduwa - close enough to the buzz of town if that is what you want, yet blissfully quiet and set well off the main road so that the only sound is the sea. The public areas of the property are intimate, well designed and immaculately clean with a private courtyard and gorgeous pool between the restaurant foyer and the long stretch of golden sand beach. The arrival process and welcoming to the property felt like arriving home, was warm personal and set the tone for a perfect 8-day stay. The staff at Roman Beach go the extra mile and are genuine in their warmth, attentiveness and efforts to make the stay perfect - thoughtful little things too numerous to mention - and the food on offer is the best we have eaten in Sri Lanka. We enjoyed daily conversations with the executive chef during which meals were discussed and the time we wanted to eat was agreed - between us we enjoyed a combination of simply prepared grilled fish & vegetables and no-holds barred Sri Lankan specialties prepared with the freshest of seasonal local ingredients. The crab curry was a particular highlight and all of the food was exceptional. We were entreated to a room upgrade (the first floor room was perfect and all 6 have views over the pool to the sea) and it was a real treat: perfectly appointed, immaculately clean and with a lovely comfortable bed, linens and generous supply of quality toiletries. Most memorable were the amazing staff!

We stayed here during the offseason so there were not a lot of places open nearby and it was fairly quiet. We were the only guests at the hotel. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet. The hotel was great. It had a very large pool, a lovely open eating area and the rooms were fantastic. The staff were very attentive to our needs and were always available if we needed anything or had any questions. Breakfast was delicious.

We loved our stay here - the staff were exceptional & couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was my favourite & its definitely recommended to order the Sri Lankan one & try all the options!
Pool & rooms were gorgeous - really well decorated & arranged.
The only thing I could have asked would be that the bedsheets were changed a bit more often - we avoided it as much as possible, but sand crept in & it would have been nice to have them replaced.
I'll definitely be recommending this place to friends & family - it is a perfect distance down the beach from the bars etc that it's very peaceful.

The roman is service off the main road but has a beautiful setting looking into the sea and beach. It's was your to walk along the beach into town but I would not recommend the main road. Service was very good, the breakfast excellent, the room was large and clean and the pool fantastic. The only thing that let someone the hotel down is its starting to look slightly weathered. After a lick of paint here and there it could look as good as it did in its original pictures. Still worth staying here!
