I really like the price. The room was close by to the business I attended so everything worked out perfect.

A little far away from the city but there's good public transportation. The area is very quiet and and looks pretty safe. The hostels staff was friendly.

I needed a place to crash while I was in town. This place was easy to find and centrally located. Kinda cool to have so many different style restaurants readily available. Drawing on bathroom walls was a cute touch

Hamtramck Hostel despite the lower stars was a pretty good experience. It was a little further from downtown than I wanted it to be so you had to drive a bit to see the city. The surrounding area was much like the rest of Detroit; eclectic in some places, and rundown in others. I feel the vibe was good at the Hostel itself. There were some very kind hearted people. I liked some of the conversations we had. I enjoyed the idea of the shared space. I liked having access to the kitchen and laundry etc. For the two nights we stayed it was probably the most that I felt comfortable with. The rooms were pretty small and the beds barely fit me. Over all I would recommend this place because of the vibe and atmosphere but be prepared for what you are getting.

Satisfied with the stay

Check-in is confusing. The email you get doesn't explain the process at all. When you get there you can press a button and the intercom that comes on sounds worse than the london underground's announcers. Meaning that what comes out is basically a bunch of noise you can't understand at all. That intercom has got to be fixed! I had to call the hostel to figure out what was going on. Other than that I have zero complaints

This is a cozy affordable spot, close to everything you could want to do in Detroit.

This Hostel is far from the Airport ,but on my arrival I met Tina who made my check in effortless ,I was staying in the Dorm with three others ,my bed was very comfortable I had blanket ,towel but the room was very cold ,actually didn't sleep well both nights but was able to explain to Tina my problem and she handled it right away , from there on the rest my days were wondering .I met a few guest who were really nice pleasant to chat with and the most friendliest staff James what a great guy .I was able to prepared my meals and stored my food in the refrigerators provided .The Hostel is located in a quiet community the bus service is like every hour there are plenty of places to eat depending on what you're looking for ,I'm picky so I didn't used them .The one thing I can truly say with staff like Tina and James who were amazing there were things I just overlooked .

The hosts helped me store my luggage prior to check in time, so that i could tour the sites since i arrived early. Upon check in, i had all the information i needed, and everything went smoothly. The room was clean and quiet, the other guests were very friendly, and the neighborhood was great, offering a variety of dining options within walking distance. If youre going into the city, the bus stop is about a 5 minute walk away, or an oober is pretty cheap too. I used both. I would definitely recommend this place.

Really comfy, clean hostel with friendly residents. Fun neighborhood to explore, we got to catch the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival while we were there.

There’s nothing wrong with this hostel - friendly, cheap, reasonably clean - it’s a hostel. The reason for the average review is that the main entrance door to the building is self closing, and every time someone enters or exits it slams, which is extremely loud in the rooms. Any decent human would notice this the first time, and close it softly thereafter. During my stay, some lovely soul was in and out all night, letting the door slam EVERY TIME. Hopefully the management can address this (a relatively minor repair), because otherwise I have no complaints.

Was meant to be staying here for five nights left after one. Place is absolutely filthy and not safe especially for a solo female traveller. First room I was given was downstairs, with a window and a curtain that would barely stop people seeing in. Was then moved upstairs to a room that had dirt and crisps on the floor and the trash can wasn’t even emptied. Even for a hostel this is really bad. Tried to speak to owner was just given a phone number to contact him on but no response

Staff were talking loudly in midnight even though they have rules of being quiet after 11pm. The bright was cooking at midnight.

Stayed for a night to go to a show a few blocks away. Staff was super friendly, parking was easy, and there were quite a few bars and restaurants within walking distance.

This was my second time staying at the Hamtramck hostel! You will have a great time here if you know what to expect.
The location is superb. It's less than 1 block from the main drag, yet located on a quiet residential street. It is safe. There is free parking on the street. TONS of great food options, and a CVS, within walking distance.
The people who run the place are very friendly as were the other guests. I recommend contacting the HH ahead of time to let them know when you'll arrive, otherwise you might have to wait a bit.
Most rooms are private, and the bathrooms are shared. The bathrooms were clean enough but not spotless... it's expected everyone cleans up after themselves. Every bathroom is single occupancy. There were always at least several open bathrooms available when I needed one--no waiting.
I didn't use the communal areas (lounge, kitchen), but they were cute, a little shabby (just like any hostel, really).
My only complaints this time around was that there was a musty smell in my room and in the lounge areas. Also, the sheets on the bed had not been changed--when I peeled back the comforter there were hair pins on the sheet. Yuck. But I let a staff person know and they got me fresh sheets and offered to re-make the bed for me. So check the sheets when you first get to your room. The mattress felt firm and very high quality, however!
All in all, a memorable and very affordable place to stay. Just don't expect any frills.

Nothing is unique. Just a simple and moderate place

It’s a Hostel no matter if you have your own room, you will not have your own bathroom or even sink ... it’s safe, quiet neighborhood and building, but it’s clearly not cleaned well if at all, floors were dirty, previous guests items left in the room ... it’s as basic as it gets!

Other than the fact no one answered the door and I had to call several times before getting ahold to someone, the place was ok to just stay for a couple of nights

No air conditioning. Owner was a nice guy. Came across as more of a halfway house rather than lodging.

A reasonably priced Uber/Lyft ride from the bus center downtown and having the early check-in fee waived got me started in a good frame of mind. The 5-bed dorm is much larger than 6-bed dorms Ive stayed in.Scott helps his guests feel like this is more of a hangout spot than rented rooms, so there are gatherings in the backyard and family dinners weekly. The upstairs shower blasts about as strong as a fire hose which is how I like it.The foam mattresses are 15 thick; so while they are quite comfortable for sleeping, its impossible for us shorter people to sit comfortably on the side of the bed. LOLHamtramck is a quaint little area and possibly the safest place Ive ever stayed this side of Toronto.

The property is more hostel than hotel in a neighborhood with relatively few amenities within walking distance.

The Hamtramck Hostel is a lovely, welcoming place. Scott, the owner and host, goes out of his way to take care of his guests. When I was staying with him, he took me and three other guests on a free personal tour of Detroit!! He is a local, and very knowledgeable and friendly. An extra bonus is his super cute dog, Jazzy.

Excellent neighborhood, where everyone knows everyone, and the locals are super friendly
