Location and the building once upon a time when it was maintained
First the summary:
* Overall experience: extreme poor value for what you pay
* Calling this a 4 star hotel just because of its “once upon a time” grandiosity is absurd. This is today a 2 star hotel at most.
* I paid 695 dollars for 2 rooms for 3 nights.
The Review:
Firstly, the hotel's maintenance was severely lacking. The rooms were outdated and in dire need of renovation. The carpets were old and stained, the furniture was worn out, and the walls had cracks and peeling paint. The bathroom was moldy (see pictures of the black mold) and the shower had poor water pressure Shower-head was disintegrating. Hot water will gradually come after several minutes of letting it run (4-5m). Two small plastic shampoo and conditioner . Only a few small soap bars.
Onto the beds. One room had two very narrow single beds and one had a single double bed. The bedsheets were stained. You get one pillow and it was lumpy and uncomfortable, making it difficult to get a good night's sleep.
There is no Air conditioner in either of the rooms provided. I read later that there are some with AC at an extra cost. We left windows open and a noisy ceiling fan on. The mosquitos had a field day with us.
The bathroom is a partition made inside the once large room which was clearly made with lower quality materials than the building itself and as mentioned moldy. No window or natural light or ventilation in the bathroom. One light fixture which was lacking the cover.
The breakfast buffet was very disappointing. There were few choices available, and the food was of poor quality. Fruits consisted of some oranges, apples, green bananas and watermelon.
There were a large amount of pastries but all the same or very similar type. Basically variations of unstuffed croissants.
Only one type of tea. One big stainless pot of bad coffee and milk. To get a cappuccino you would have to pay extra.

Location really was the only good thing
After thinking that I had booked and paid for a 4 star hotel, only to turn up to a 2 star (at best) hotel that i basically ready to be demolished. There has been no modernization or maintenance since it was built 60 years ago. A pitiful experience and will be complaining further.

Need darkness in the room to sleep.
Need to clean better (bathroom with rest of soap and water)
More personal in the reception at least

I feel ripped off. I paid 115 USD per night. The rooms have no heating, everything is literally from 1930 without any sort of renewal or update. This means that the doors and windows are old, wind blows through, and the rooms are freezing, and also no heating... so imagine... Breakfast is a also a joke in comparison to what you get in other hotels for the same price. Basically, I'd be happy to pay probably 40-50 or maybe even 60 USD (considering the 'pictoresc' environment), but not 115 USD per night.
Some of the staff were great, others, quite 'not-customer' oriented. Definitely not coming back.

Great breakfast, good location. Accessibility of the heated swimming pools until 21:00.
Bedrooms are standard but clean. No smart TV, only basic channels available

Loved the staff. Very friendly..specially with my toddler. The building is amazing. And the kids area is pretty cool...if you are traveling with kids keep that in mind. Breakfast was good and loved the music shows at night...it actually felt like we were back in the days when the hotel first opened. Rooms are confy and if you can ask for front view...it's amazing waking up and seeing the ocean.

We liked everything ! The architecture , the big rooms with towering ceilings, the ambiance of 1940"s with marble and beautiful woods and the colored designed glasses at the end of each staircases. The thermal pools are wonderful, the
breakfast offering is abundant and varied.
The staff and servers were incredible in offering a detailed attention to us.
The selection of artists playing during dinner time was excellent. They created a familiar environment. EXCELLENT !!!
The rooms and hallways needed maintenance in doors, windows and electric outlets.
It will be beautiful once they finished the proposed restauration.

Our room had a/c which is not available in all rooms. Beds were comfortable. Nice pool. Good location.
Very old and dated hotel. Considering the price you pay at the most expensive hotel in Piriapolis it needs a complete overall. TV was a 14inch old style TV, not that we used it, but it is an oddity in this day and age.

Breakfast was standard for Uruguay hotels that include free breakfast in the price of the lodging. Two covered and climatized pools were ok. The hotel called it a “marine spa” which was far from it.
No air conditioner, fan stopped working in the middle of the first night of our stay and was never fixed. There were clothes from previous guest in the closets of our room. Employees seemed bothered when a guest asked any questions.

The hotel was very large and clean, there are different facilities for all kinds of guests, playrooms, big garden, tennis courts. Staff was friendly and attentive. The pools that were available (it was winter) were clean and the water had a good temperature.
The breakfast wasn't the best. Due to covid each table already had its assigned breakfast (though you could ask for more), but there wasn't a lot of variety. Also there wasn't any bike rental available because the provider for the hotel also was closed because of covid.
