Racial discrimination: On 5/28/2022, I checked in at the cottage and I parked on the street. A neighbor came out and started taking pictures of our vehicle and asked us if we were the caterers. There was nothing to indicate that we were caterers except race - I am Filipino. Not only was the neighbor’s comment offensive, it was also extremely poorly timed given that we had just come from a funeral viewing of a family member and were grieving the loss. I brought this up to the owner during our conversation about the house rules and she said, "Don't give me that, I am also brown." This comment was also offensive. It was confusing as well because we had not met face to face, so I did not know how she could know my racial background.
I read VRBO’s policy and it says that “Vrbo does not tolerate acts of harassment, violence, or discrimination. We expect all members of our community to demonstrate respect and tolerance in all interactions with one another, both online and offline. If you mistreat people, there’s no space for you on Vrbo”.
Non-disclosure of a smart device: Because of the owner’s offensive remark, I was concerned that she was watching me without my consent through the Ring camera on her door. I covered up that camera because I felt racially profiled and felt very uneasy about being watched without my consent. I was told by my husband that there were 2 other cameras on the property which were not disclosed to me. VRBO’s policy says that "smart devices which may not be activated remotely are allowed provided the guest is informed of their presence and given the option to deactivate."
The owner stated during a phone conversation on 5/29/2022 that because her remote camera activates every time someone obstructs it, she is asking me to leave the rental. I was not informed of the presence of the cameras nor was I given the option to deactivate such a remote device.
Emotional distress: The e-mail and phone interactions with the owner have caused me tremendous emotional distress in the midst of dealing with the loss of my brother and arranging his funeral. All I wanted was to find a place that would be a sanctuary for me and my husband at such a difficult time. The viewing was on Saturday, the funeral service was on Sunday and the cremation was scheduled for Tuesday. I paid for the place in full to check out on Tuesday.
I saw the email to vacate the house after I had just delivered the eulogy for my brother on Sunday.

The actual stay was very comfortable. The property is located in a very quiet neighborhood up on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The owners were accommodating by allowing us to check in one hour earlier than scheduled. However, 8 days prior to our vacation rental starting, the property manager contacted me and requested another $200 in payment fees. Stating "she had forgotten to adjust the rates"; six weeks after we had rented the property. She also had said if we didn't want to pay the $200 extra that she would cancel our reservation. This would have left us with 8 days to find a place to stay on a big weekend in Laguna Beach. I was not very happy about that. Communication with whoever Maggie is was minimal and frustrating. Furthermore, when emailing Maggie it shows a man named Neil. I didnt know who I was talking to. The wifi did not work the whole stay nor did the TV because it's hooked up to the Wi-Fi. There is no rule book for the property which led to some confusion as well. All in all the property is beautiful, and clean .

Loved this property. It was clean, decorated well and very comfortable. Views of ocean were fantastic. Neighborhood was great, and walking distance to beach/Laguna shopping & restaurants (since this is located in the hills of Laguna, the walk is healthy but doable). Can't wait for a return stay!

This cottage was a wonderful place for a getaway. The views are amazing as you can see the ocean from the sitting area at the front door, inside the main room/dining area, the back yard, and even from one of the bedrooms. All necessary amenities were there. Great shower. Need to bring a plug adapter to charge any USB devices. TV was great but there was no sound bar. There were POLK satellite speakers around but no instructions of if they are connected or an ability to use them. May benefit from a large mirror in each room since bathroom only has a tiny one. Well maintained and clean!! Will be looking for repeat visits in the future.

Just the perfect relaxing escape cottage. Loved being above the chaos of town with beautiful views and weather. Cottage is charming, not overdone with beach decor, jwarm and nicely decorated. The yard is the perfect place for a before dinner cocktail while watching the sunset. So pleased we chose to stay at the Spanish Cottage, looking forward to returning.

Overall it was a good stay, the location and the views were nice, the property was clean, beds were comfortable, furniture and TVs in good condition, appliances are modern and clean, kitchen is fully stocked with utensils and what you need, Keurig coffee machine provided. the front and back yards were really nice.Few things to keep in mind:1- The cottage is on the small side, proper for 4 people to stay at the most2- One out of the two bedrooms used to be a garage that was converted into a bedroom (or the just added Garage doors outside for decoration??) with a door that opens into the patio and the A/C unit is right by the door, so you will be hearing the A/C unit when staying in this room, also inside this room you'll find the washer/dryer and the water heater (these are not concealed and actually right inside the room).3- No Garage, as I mentioned above it was converted into a bedroom), so although you see Garage doors outside you actually only could park on the driveway.4- bring your coffee pods, their is a Keurig machine but with no pods provided, no drip coffee machine.5- bring your toiletries, no toothpaste provided and only one small shampoo 1Oz bottle provided. 6- The home is on a semi busy street, if you are sitting outside then you will hear cars through out the day but at night it was quite, inside the home it was quite given the sound insulation.

Overall we enjoyed our stay at this property and especially the beautiful views from the front and back yard. The house was clean and in relatively good shape overall. The kitchen had the basics and then some. Some of the furniture was a little beat up/worn, but perfectly functional. We enjoyed sitting the backyard to watch the sunsets and would have really liked some more comfortable patio furniture.

While I realize that we rented the small home in the middle of summer, the property is undermanaged. In order of nuisance, the BBQ grill did not work, the windows were dirty, the floors were not as clean as they should be and the outdoor garbage cans were full from the prior guests. There were other minor issues that I need not mention here, but otherwise, the location is great as well as the views of Main Beach.

We loved our stay! The cottage is modern and highly functional with a very nice front entry area and back patio. The location is special - up the mountain overlooking the town of Laguna Beach and many miles of coastline. Just up the road is the Top of the World area with the trailhead for great hiking, running or mountain biking trails. And just down the road is the town of Laguna and its many beaches. With that convenience, it's still quiet and peaceful on the back patio as you eat dinner and watch the sun set. It was exactly what we were looking for and a hard combination to find in a property.

The Spanish Cottage was very nice with views that were amazing. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. The location was very nice for views . I suggest you to drive to dinner and beach . Hiking trails within walking distance.

This is a lovely cottage with incredible views. It is clean and well stocked and was perfect for our short visit. The back room with two beds was very clean, but a little dark. Also there were not any useful outlets for phone charging etc in that room. Communication prior to arrival was a little slow. We have rented homes around the world, and did not have to wait until the last minute for arrival details like we did with this house, But overall very lovely and I highly recommend.

The cottage is great. The street is located on is busy, but, the view is outstanding. The bathroom has no place to put any products, and very small. The master bedroom has a great bed and ample closet space. The TV's did not work. I loved being there and would definitely go back.

We just returned from a short getaway at this lovely cottage. It is located high in the hills, with sweeping ocean views from the living room and bedroom and backyard. The decor is nice and the property is very private. The kitchen is equipped with your basic necessities and there is on site parking. Very quiet area.

Our family really enjoyed the Spanish cottage. The views were spectacular, and the property has a well equipped kitchen, gas grill, outdoor gas heater, with sitting areas in the front and back, which came in handy with the sun and time of day. Everything was in working order and will be back in the future. We had planned to use the trolly, but it was not consistent and you have to go up the mountain before you come back down to the beach. In town. The parking and metering system in Laguna is exceptional, and we had little trouble finding parking, except for just prior to The Pageant of the Masters. Overall, the views and the outside spaces more than made up for the few shortcomings of this house. We loved it, and will miss it from the east coast!

We didn't want to leave. It really was a great romantic getaway for Erika and me. Great views, well appointed cottage, convenient to everything but private and quiet. We hiked up behind the house, went to the farmers market and brought home some beautiful food, made all of our meals "at home" and enjoyed the views. Could not recommend it more highly.

While we had booked and eagerly anticipated our Laguna get-away, we had to cancel our paid reservation due to my husband's invitation to participate in conference and training events in Europe. Our problem was that the conference and seminars are scheduled for dates when we had planned to be soaking up the sun and enjoying this lovely property in charming Laguna. Of course, we didn't want to forfeit the funds that we had paid for the property rental.
In addition to all of the other positive comments listed here about this rental, the business practices and cooperation of the owner deserve high praise. She was very understanding about our scheduling dilemma and bent over backwards to release us from the rental agreement we had signed. Because we had booked our rental along with the VRBO renter's insurance, all of our rental money was returned to us. Maggie went to bat for us to ensure that we would recover the rental fees that we had paid. Frankly, she could have been indifferent to our schedule conflict, collected our money, and, if she'd been unscrupulous, she could have even rented the home again for the same period and doubled her income. But, no, she was warm, understanding, honorable, and went out of her way to release us from the rental agreement and refund our money.

An AMAZING cottage with GORGEOUS views!! The yard is adorable! Totally enclosed and private with a fountain, outdoor shower, grill and furniture. The front yard equally wonderful...we couldn't decide where we wanted to relax! The decor is perfect!! Beautifully decorated...we never wanted to leave. The owner was fantastic! She prepared a little welcome basket and even made us reservations for dinner. We LOVED LOVED LOVED our stay. The perfect place for us...we can't wait to come back and bring our 3 kids.

We found this Spanish cottage to be perfect in every way. It boasts absolutely charming Spanish architecture with all the modern conveniences and is beautifully/tastefully decorated. The ocean views are breathtaking, with comfortable spaces both inside and out to enjoy the view. For techies, the WiFi works great and the cottage is equipped with 2 flat screen TVs with comprehensive satellite TV programming. The beds are comfy and cozy. The owner/host is extremely friendly, accessible and accommodating -- we were even greeted with a welcome basket filled with goodies and a nice bottle of wine. Highly recommended -- we truly didn't want to leave!
