This is a funky old hotel in excellent condition conveniently located for us. Staff are friendly and helpful, plenty of parking. Not a cookie cutter hotel if that's what you're looking for.

Not sure we got the room we paid for because it was supposed to have bay windows but the room was fine. Because the room was booked through Expedia the staff didn’t know what we paid compared to room we got. Otherwise, the place is an excellent choice for budget travelers. Be aware…no elevators for those having problems with stairs. Request a room on first floor.

Clean quaint hotel, but I did not realized that the room I booked it did not have a private bathroom, That was very inconvenient for me. Otherwise the room was fine.

Stayed here many times, always clean and friendly, I book here before any where else in Portland. 5 Stars..

a really nice place to stay for a solo adventurer. it’s about a 5 minute (or less) walk to the bus stop that takes you to downtown portland with ease. walls are pretty thin though, so if you’re a light sleeper be advised (i was not :P)

Great little place! Really enjoyed the rustic charm

A cute and quaint little inn, it was perfect for our city stay. It was easy to access from the highway and easy to get around town by city bus. The staff was helpful. Light sleepers should request a room away from the main street which tends to get noisy at various times through the night.

A bit quirky, older European style hotel. Rooms are small, slightly dated, bed too, did have a sink. Breakfast is your typical American. Staff friendly. Steep stairs to go up, no elevator. We shared a bathroom. Takes about 25 min or so to walk to old port. Great coffee, bakery 5 min walk away. Overall was decent. Close to airport

The staff at Inn at St. John could not have been friendlier or more helpful. We had a nice room on the top floor. However, I should have read the website more carefully when we arrived with a lot of heavy luggage. I didn't realize there was no elevator. The next time, I will request a room on a lower floor. Also, the mattress could stand to be replaced soon as it sagged noticeably.

Awesome. Very charming place. Really nice alternative to the larger business hotels in town.

This hotel is old with old fixtures and utilities, like our "private" bath out the bedroom door and down the hall. This feature was not mentioned in the description.

Ok, except I didn't like the idea of sharing bathroom

I liked there was a very nice, cozy, comfortable and affordable option for just what I needed as a lone traveler. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to others.

It’s a lot of stairs to take with luggage

Breakfast was nice, the room was well laid out. I appreciated having a private hall bathroom. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
One note: this is very definitely a stair dependent space in case you have mobility needs.

Cute property, small room but charming - be aware not all rooms have en- suite bathrooms and no elevator is available

Carpet was very dirty. Didn’t mind sharing a bathroom but it was very dirty and didn’t feel comfortable using it. It was a cheaper option and good for a quick night stay after a concert.

The staff was quite unresponsive and showed no interest in us as guests. As 70 year olds we had to carry our luggage up three flights if difficult stairs and were not made aware of that prior to checking in. We were there four nights and there was no room services/cleaning, fresh towels or anything. Very disappointing. Will not stay there again.

Excellent location.

Clean enough for a quick one night. The surrounding neighborhood is a bit sketchy.

1). The property was not as nice as advertised.
2). There was no place to park and unload suitcases.
3). Parking was only available 2 blocks from hotel in a not-very-safe-looking parking lot.
Next time we’ll spend the extra $$ and stay in Old Town.

Somewhat cozy old hotel with small but nice rooms. OK breakfast, and easy parking. The air conditioning was extremely loud though.

Smelled of urine and cigarettes. 2 male staff were overly rude. Parking was an issue. Rooms were out dated and dirty.

Nice helpful staff people. Lovely ambience Good breakfast.

The property itself was super unique and historic. The room was plenty large and cozy. The doors locked and unlocked easily and we were given a parking pass. Bathroom included basic showering needs. Mini fridge was a great size and it was easy to walk to Old Port (roughly 40 minutes).

It's an old-fashioned hotel with bathrooms in the hall (for our room). Very small room and cramped breakfast area. Had to carry our luggage up 3 long staircase. A "walk-up". The staff was nice. Well maintained. Good downtown location right on Congress. Probably a good price for downtown Portland (??). Just know what you're getting into if you're staying at the St. John.

The inn was nice and the staff were friendly. I was only staying 1 night - so I decided a shared bathroom was okay. The room was small, which was totally okay. My only complaint was the AC - it was super humid, so bad that my Birks felt wet. I ended up just opening the window which was way more comfortable. I think the inn was a good value - especially when compared to the hotels in the area.
3.0
Sharing a bathroom with the whole rest of the floor made for an uncomfortable stay that never felt fully private. Consider at least adding a “vacant / occupied” lock to the bathroom door. I accidentally walked in on a man peeing because he didn’t close the door all the way. People didn’t knock, they just tried to open the door. Someone left a big poop stain on the back of the toilet seat. It was super disgusting. Also we were not prepared for how many stairs we had to climb to reach our room.
8.0
Small parking if you don't get their when others check out you park on the side of the road. Room was nice and employees where nice also.
