My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate our special wedding anniversary. We wanted somewhere with character and of a high standard that also had a good restaurant offering. We were not disappointed. We stayed in a superior double room had a lovely view of the hillside. We were impressed by the standard of the room and enjoyed the little extras such as handmade biscuits in a cookie jar and quality shower products etc.The staff were all very friendly and courteous. The restaurant serves a set menu with 3 or 4 choices which changes each night, and all the dishes are prepared freshly from local produce. We hope to return one day.

Liked the fact it was in a quiet, peaceful and pretty location with good access to the Castle Drogo Estate so by a lovely walking area. Am sure that in the summer months it would be lovely to be able to sit outside in the garden where there were table and chairs set up for same. Also liked that there was afternoon tea laid on if you so desired same.

The hotel and all the staff were wonderful. The food was delicious especially the breakfast. The walks and location was perfect. Our Labrador was well looked after. The hotel is very dog friendly. The only minor issue was that the room and lounge was cold until the log fire was lit in the lounge and the heating was switched on at 6.00 pm. We will look forward to returning.

weekend stay for wedding anniversary. Great stay and location for walks as we took our dog and the staff were great provided everything that you required and treats for the dog. the only thing that I would say is the price for evening meal was rather expensive the meals were good but expensive it would pay to have 2 different menus so as customer can choose.
We would definitely stay here again and will be planning on booking for another weekend stay

We really enjoyed our stay, the suite was clean and comfortable with a lovely balcony, unfortunately the weather was awful,so we couldn’t use it or go on the planned walks. The breakfast was outstanding with a lovely buffet and a comprehensive menu.We thought that the dinner menu was limited and quite expensive, but the restaurant was lovely and the service outstanding,if the weather had been better it would have made a huge difference.

Gorgeous rooms, fabulous food worth booking in for the dinner at the hotel reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Good local produce plenty of breakfast and good level of choice. Very dog friendly but not obvious from decor etc. we felt bad about dog staying at home lol.

Fantastic location for exploring the Moors, well equipped hotel for walkers and those with dogs. I only gave a low score on some points as we were in a 'dog friendly' room that was a little tired on decor, we were on a anniversary weekend and i thought i had booked a upgraded King room (certainly paid for it) but was disappointed on out room.

Initially disappointed. Arrived early and waited till 2.30pm as shown on hotels.com arrival time. Then told to wait till 3.15 as per hotel policy. Rooms not ready but no attempt to check. From thereon it was up hill. Beautiful room, food was impressive and best of all even though we forgot to say gluten free for my wife when we ordered they brought everything knowing she was gluten free. The restaurant system was clearly on top. Well done chefs it was perfect food and wine.

We stayed here for two nights in a junior suite and our view was beautiful, the room clean and has lovely character. The staff made the stay extra special, they were relaxed, accommodating and kind, I found it to be a very special place in a great location.

Excellent hotel in a beautiful part of the world. Lovely room. Well-organised booking system for meals ensured no long waits.

Beautiful location with lots of walks from the hotel. Very dog friendly.
The only trouble we had was with our Expedia booking - funds paid almost 2 months prior to our stay were not transferred to the hotel so I had to pay in full again and contact Expedia to refund the payment. Best to book direct with the hotel.

Great little hotel in a nice location but not well set up in terms of service at dinner. We were asked to come down 15 mins before our booked dinner slot but werent actually allowed to sit down to eat till 45 mins later! Not sure why they asking everyone to go down so early and then all sit in a holdong pen in the lounge for so long - would have preferred a call to our room when they were actually ready. Meant we ate very late, there was a big gap between courses as well (30mins plus) to the point where we cancelled our dessert as were ready for bed by the time they cleared our main! Shame because the actual food was amazing. Breakfast was a similar story of a really long wait sitting at the table for 30mins plus before food - not great if you want to get out and about. Hope they improve on the service.

The building is in a lovely setting, and has an old world character. The room was quite small with a low roof for a third of the space. It smelt of dog. One of the bathroom mirror lights was out. The bath and shower were fine. The water to the basin dried to a trickle in the night.
The TV did not work, this was reported and we were told it was ‘atmospherics’. I asked other guests in the morning and their TVs were working.
We ate in the restaurant, my wife had Dover Sole which was tasteless and rubbery, I had chicken which was clearly processed. The starters were fine.
All the above was reported to the receptionist in the morning the TV problem was explained as an ‘intermittent fault’, although the TV had not worked in the morning either. We were offered a small discount to the bill.

Great lifeless hotel. A nice quiet place to get away from it all. The restaurant was excellent and breakfast was great as well.
Very helpful and friendly staff.
Will definitely go back.

The hotel is lovely. We arrived mid afternoon and were able to check in. The room (garden room with outdoor terrace area) was great ... lovely comfortable bed! We had a drink and a small bit to eat. Unfortunately we were only there for an overnight stay and had to leave the next day, so did not eat in the in the hotel's restaurant.
