Great value. Decent room, free drink voucher, free breakfast. Friendly staff.

We have stayed in the Carlton before & it was OK, this time it was terrible. Checked in on a Friday for a 7 night stay, Saturday morning mid shower there was no warm water. Went for breakfast, the young lad who was serving on seemed to have no interest in what he was doing, the urn had not been switched on so no hot water for coffee/tea, there was no bread for toast, no fruit. We had to complete a pre order for breakfast so they knew what we wanted so there is no excuse for items to be missing (Black pudding Sat & Sun, mushrooms Tues & Wed) Also the only butter available was a tub of utterly butterly that had the previous users toast crumbs in it.On Sunday he turned the urn on but there was no water in it. From Monday onwards the service was a lot better apart from the missing mushrooms, hot water, bread fruit & individual butters. Our room was not serviced properly I had to ask for it to be done on the Sunday so we got clean towels & replacement coffee & milk, toilet rolls - we resorted to buying our own just in case we were not given any & we were right to do so. The room was only vaccumed once in the whole week & after Sunday I had to ask for it to be serviced on a further 2 occasions, one time we had to leave our key because they had lost the master keys. There was never anyone there to complain to all dealings went through the bar staff or the waiting staff. There was hardly any storage in the room, definitely not enough for 2 people who were staying for a week.

Really great staff and comfortable stay. There are stairs and no lift so it’s not suitable for people with physical disability. It takes time to get the water running hot but the place was quite nice and much better than I expected from the ratings. Breakfast was not that great but the complementary drinks and coffee machine in the room was a nice bonus.

Property was old but affordable but lacked parking nearby.

Lady received us was wonderful but breakfast team was terrible. Almost everything was finished, the boy was topping up but he was not available easily. it took 1 and almost half hour to finish the breakfast. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Dont stay here - the reviews are beyond inaccurate. I never write reviews, but when I saw the dreadful state of the place and clientele, I politely said I wouldn't be staying and could I have a refund. They declined - which is in keeping with the experience. A truly unpleasant place to stay - I seriously question Expedia's rating system. Dump.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, though a bit noisy late at night (but they gave earplugs…). No lift, so did have a lot of stairs to climb. The main disappointment was the breakfast. Poor quality food, overcooked, wrong items, and scarcity of food on buffet. Staff were friendly and helpful; checkout was easy.

The Hotel is on a street corner and parking nearby is limited we had bags and a child with us and our room was on the top floor and no lift available so 6 flights of stairs the room itself was well presented and clean but this is where the niggles came in our bed sheet had a cigarette burn hole in it and the shower which was very complicated to use the main handle was hanging off had had to be constantly pressed back on it was a windy old day and the top floor windows which where old sash cord type windows and had the wind stopping resistance of a seive however its not all bad staff are lovely breakfast was amazing not sure if we would use again but its not all bad

The room was very unique, beautiful, and comfortable. The pub was lively! Very interesting place to stay, would return.

The hotel/pub looks like an 'old man's pub' but the rooms are very comfortable and clean. The breakfast was very tasty and Claire was amazingly helpful and friendly by pointing out the best places to eat.

Room was cozy and clean, staff was extremely friendly and enjoyable to talk to. The bar/pub downstairs was a great chill atmosphere filled with people who clearly knew and loved each other. Plenty of options for food in the area, and the pub was priced very reasonably. Will absolutely be staying again

Honestly- there was nothing to like. We arrived and had to go looking for someone to check us in. Barmaid came through and did this in a corridor. I asked to use ladies toilet, DISGUSTING didn’t cover it. The room was a basic mis match with no wash hand basin in bathroom but in bedroom??? This place is in the dark ages. We left in the morning and there were glasses some full, some empty, lying all over the floor of the hotel and spilled out over into the street outside. Left us ear plugs but those weren’t equipped to drown out the noise from downstairs. A complete disaster never slept a wink. If not for my husbands poor health I would have left after our function at night instead of morning. Sorry guys…….but you did ask.

Always stay at the Charlton, 3-4 times a year.
Every visit is the same.. warm, welcoming and a feel of home away from home.
Staff are great, facilities perfect, location great and parking at rear.
Go for the Comfort Room (4 poster bed) as the rooms are bigger, comfier and comes with great facilities.

The room was clean but wires everwhere. Slippy shower room mat. Nowhere to hang towels in shower room. The bin hadnt been emptied. The TV didnt have a remote cintrol that worked. The door outside our room creaked badly and we had crowds of drunk people under the window of our room. We also had a guest making a loud call outside our room at5am. Breakfast was ok though there was no cutlery. The dining room staff and check in staff were very pleasant but the dining room manager was overworked.

I have probably stayed in 30+ different hotels whilst i have travelled for work. And to be honest this has to rank rop 5 worst ever.
Upon arrival, i was a little confused on the parking scenario. There was a few parking spaces on the main road, most of them occupied. But no sign of the hotel parking as stated when i booked it. For this is was infact a bit of a trek to dind it. And in no means somewhere id feel safe leaving it.
Checking in was a little confusing as there was no reception. Only a bar full of punters!
After getting my room key i climbed to the top floor which was 4 floors up. Entering the corridors it freezing. Hoping my room was warmer i opened the door to disappointment. The out of season cold snap had left my room like a freezer. Unhappy i asked for a heater to warm it up. Only that wasnt the only thing i got. I was also told i was unable to use my shower as it leaks to the room below. A fault promised to be fixed asap.
As the night passed the wind rattled my window banging it throughout the night. An issue i soon found to be a complaint in a previous comment.
Breakfast was a little miss sold. The sausages are not gourmet but more like walls sausages from the cooperative accross the road.
The next day i enquired if the shower was repaired. The answer i got was 'sorry no' after complaining and waiting for the manager to communicate. I was told there was a mix up and it was... it wasnt they lied it still leaked. Needless to say that stay was cut short

Very cute place right in the center of town. Comfortable bed, lovely staff, charming town.

Lovely old building, very comfy bed. Right on the high street. Amazing staff. It was quite noisy until the bar closed but it meant we had the chance to meet the friendly locals and have a few drinks. Great weekend break.
