About this house rental
Welcome to La Maison de la Riviere, luxury accommodation on the leafy banks of the Dordogne. We provide a 5 bedroom house and an attached 2 bedroom cottage for rental overlooking the river in the heart of Bordeaux wine country, just a few minutes from the famous vineyards of Saint Emilion. We offer the property to be rented together as one single rental, accommodating up to 12 adults (and 4 children).
The 5 bedrooms in the main house are all spacious and individually decorated. They retain their 200 year old character, some with original fireplaces, exposed stone walls, and country French furniture, while being fitted out with life's modern necessities. All bathrooms in the house are fitted with travertine Italian tiled showers. The main house comprises of a master bedroom with super king bed and en-suite shower room, 2 king size bedrooms each with en-suite shower rooms, one double bedroom that shares a very spacious family bathroom with a further bedroom, which can accommodate up to 4 children. Downstairs in the main house there is a large eat-in kitchen which is very generously equipped, and is linked to a separate dining room. There are two further reception rooms for relaxing and unwinding, both of which are equipped with large flat-screen TVs. Internet access is available throughout most of the property. All bedrooms have newly installed air-conditioning.
The cottage, or 'Gite' has its own entrance and private garden overlooking the river. Upstairs it comprises of a king-size master bedroom overlooking the river with an en-suite shower room, and a second double bedroom (can be converted into two single beds) and an en-suite shower room and walk-in dressing room. Downstairs there is a small but well equipped kitchen and dining area.
The house is set within a large private garden equipped with children’s swing set and table tennis table. A BBQ is provided and there are several lovely settings in which to enjoy a meal outdoors. The large heated swimming pool (available 1 May to 31 October) is set within the private garden close to the house with a backdrop of shady trees. Overlooking the river we also have a full size petanque court.
It is an ideal base for family holidays and for those wanting to explore the surrounding world famous vineyards. The house is made from local limestone making it cool in the hot summer months, but with central heating and a large, open fireplace, it is also ideal for an autumn / winter break.
The market town of Castillon la Bataille is situated just across the river. With its old stone bridge and wonderful views it holds a typically French street market every Monday morning and is well served by restaurants, boulangeries, banks, pharmacies and supermarkets. It was the site of the 100 year war in 1453 and the battle of Castillion is celebrated in July and August every year with spectacular re-enactment The stunning medieval village of Saint Emilion is just 12km away, whose architecture and surrounding vineyards are part of the World Heritage of UNESCO. Lac du Cadie, a man-made lake, is a few minutes away by car and has an excellent large beach with safe swimming and water activities in the Summer months.
A canoe trip along the Dordogne is a great way to see the local wildlife, as well as the odd Chateau hidden amongst the trees A 90 minute drive brings you to the coast where, along with endless white sandy beaches, with you will find the town of Arcachon famous for its delicious oysters and Europe’s largest sand dune Bordeaux is easily accessible by train from Castillon, or by car, and the airport is within an hour’s drive. Bergerac airport is also reached within an hour.

A wonderful property for extended family to get together. Plenty of space to hang out or find your own space. Air conditioning in the bedrooms was very effective. Swimming pool is phenomenal.

We could not have asked for a more beautiful property and accommodating property manager. The chateau was warm and inviting, perfectly situated, and extremely comfortable. We loved our rooms, en suite bathrooms that were updated, and the cozy fireplace on chilly days. We would definitely stay here again!

We loved this property and it was even better than what we could tell by the pictures on the website. In particular, the indoor and outdoor spaces are well laid out - the pool and outdoor dining space is private and there are plenty of tables, chairs, lounging and games. Also abundant umbrellas to protect from the sun. The interior is spacious with plenty of rooms for dining, lounging and cooking. The kitchen is very well stocked with china, glasses, equipment and appliances. Having AC, especially in the bedrooms, was critical for us during a very hot spell in early September. The beds were very comfortable. Two of the bedrooms (one in the house and one in the gite) are best suited to children. The other five were great for adults. Having 5 bathrooms (4 of which are ensuite) was amazing for our group of 5 adult women.
The location is close enough to town to make boulangerie, marche and supermarche errands easy. It is also perfectly quiet. The view of the river is lovely. The drive to St. Emilion, St. Foy La Grande and other towns was easy. There is plenty to see, do, eat and drink within 30 minutes in any direction.
Finally, the owner's agent on the ground, John, was incredibly helpful and responsive. He was there to greet us, show us how things worked and to see us off. We hated to leave.

My wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our 14 family members at this property. We had such a fantastic experience at the villa. The bedrooms were a nice size and well furnished; the kitchens were sizable and well equipped and we had two different local chefs, recommended in the property tips book, come in and cook and serve two delicious dinners; the pool was heated and maintenance free and enjoyed by all; the toy room and billiard table were popular spots; we had table tennis and pétanque tournaments using the property amenities; the little ones enjoyed the swing set and slide; most of our dinners were enjoyed outside on the large table; and I enjoyed coffee and reading every morning overlooking the river.
John was the property manager and you couldn't ask for a more pleasant and competent person. John met us at the property when we arrived and thoroughly went over everything we needed to know. After this initial meetup he quickly responded to any questions we had, he arrived in mid-week to check the pool chemical balance, and I'm happy to say that there were no problems or issues at all with the property during our stay.
Of course, this area of France is quite charming and restaurants (including one with Michelin two stars), wine tastings, and train access to Bordeaux are a bonus. This was a wonderful place to celebrate our anniversary and we highly recommend it.

A very comfortable house - we were 4 families who spent a week together and there were plenty of places to socialise or escape to and lots of options for entertainment - tv room, pool room, badminton, boules, games. Lovely location on the Dordogne but it is a trek to the nearest (open) restaurant and shop so you do need to bike or drive mostly (especially during a hot summer). But would definitely recommend.

Family of 9 adults, 5 children and 2 babies. Beautiful home in spacious surroundings, very apt to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary. The VRBO photos of the place do it justice. Owners and property manager (John) very accommodating and helpful. We would definitely recommend and would return.

We had the most wonderful time. House was beautiful, with everything you could possibly need, and of such a high standard. We were 3 generations and there was plenty of room for everyone to do things together, and also to spend time alone reading if that is what we wanted. Wonderful pool which we all used every day. Table tennis, pool table and pétanque also greatly appreciated. Such a lot of things for the kids to do- board games, drawing etc and lots for adults too. All in all we couldn’t have wished for anything more. John was extremely helpful and came out when we couldn’t get air conditioning to work. Thank you soo much- a holiday we will never forget.

Fantastic property , great welcome and a great holiday had by all the family! Thank you!

Lovely location, facilities good. Only observation would be that considering there is a 450 euro cleaning charge I would have expected the property to have been perfect on our arrival; it wasn't. This is not a complaint as overall the place was great and we all had a fabulous time. I just think the owners should know.

This is truly an amazing house. Beautiful location next to the river, great pool, lovely bedrooms, lots of great spots to eat together and so well equipped. We had a big family holiday at the house for a week and it was perfect. Would love to come back. Thanks for having us :)

Great location just the other side of the small local road from the peaceful Dordogne river.
Very well appointed property, especially kitchen equipment.
Lovely heated swimming pool and many sports facilities, table tennis, pool table, petanque.
Great restaurant "Au four de la Rive" just 100 yards away on riverfront.

My family visited the house for my Dad's 60th birthday and there ended up being 8 of us, but the house would have fitted at least 7 more! This is a beautiful house overlooking the Dordogne, with all the amenities you could wish for. We particularly enjoyed the lounge with open fireplace and pool table where we relaxed in the evenings, and during the day we made the most of the amazing outside space and swimming pool. The bedrooms are gorgeous and every couple had their own bathroom, which was a great touch. We also had a young baby with us and had no problems.
The house is very central for enjoying wine country, with St Emilion a 20 minute drive away, and Castillon la Bataille a 10 minute drive (lovely market town with patisserie, boulangerie, supermarkets etc.). It is a drive to any shops so be aware of that, but there is a restaurant a short walk away that we enjoyed.
The house manager and owner were both very responsive and offered lots of really valuable advice.
In summary: we are already planning when we cam come back!

This is the perfect gite and exactly what we were looking for! Both the house and the grounds are even nicer than the pictures. The house has everything that you could want—fully stocked kitchen, grill, pool, renovated bathrooms, etc. It’s spacious and very clean. Both the owner and property manager could not have been more responsive.
It’s about a 5 min drive to the closest village, and about a 20 min drive to St. Emilion. We had no problems getting taxis to and from dinner, but they were a bit pricey (50 euro each way to St. Emilion). We did cook in some, one day for brunch and one night for dinner. Dining on the grounds, facing the river or by the pool was lovely.
We could not have been happier there, and would recommend this house without hesitation.
