About this house rental
Welcome to The Shorebird, a peaceful get-away in Prime Hook Beach, Delaware. Fully renovated in 2023, our all season home overlooks the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and sits across the street from the private and quiet Delaware Bay beach. Close to the popular Delaware beaches, Cape Henlopen State Park, restaurants, shopping and action for the kids but tucked away from the traffic and crowds.
We’re you're kind of place if you enjoy:
-Being off the beaten path: we're just a small community of homes along the bay and the refuge.
-Sunrise-watching, surf fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding across the street.
-Spreading out or walking the long, natural/uncombed beach while sharing it with horseshoe crabs, shorebirds and treasures that change with the seasons.
-Watching migratory birds and sunsets over the refuge water from the comfort of our huge windows or back porch.
-Catching crabs or fish off the bridge and cooking them for dinner.
-Kayaking, fresh water fishing and birdwatching from the many close-by trails.
-Taking the bikes for a spin through the refuge and neighboring farmland.
-Heading out to the close-by historic towns of Milton and Lewes for great restaurants, antiquing and shows.
-Ending the night with drinks and a fire on the beach.
-Staying in and cozying up to the gas fireplace while stargazing out the picture window.
We strive to have a clean and organized home so that your stay is comfortable. Our guests love the many amenities we provide so that you don't have to pack them: quality sheets & towels, plenty of blankets and pillows and a well stocked kitchen. For the beach we have a kayak & paddle board, 8 chairs, an umbrella & tent and lots of toys. We also have bikes for the whole family, plenty of books, puzzles & games (even an air hockey and mini ping pong table). Come to relax and explore!

This property was way more than expected. Lots of room, lots of amenities, and a location that was across the street from the beach and backed up to a wildlife refuge with wonderful views.

This is almoat a private island. The views alone are worth it. Close enough to markets and attractions but away from the bustle. The host was on top of her game. There was a lot of experience and thought put into this place. We had a memorable time.

The description of this property is extremely accurate, as are the many very positive reviews. If you desire a quiet location to enjoy a peaceful vacation, this property will be perfect. Another great advantage of is the diverse range of amenities and supplies provided by the property owner. It is a windfall to be able to travel without having to transport baby gates, portable cribs, books, toys, bikes, kayak, paddle board, beach chairs, towels, bedding, etc. On our one rainy day the air hockey, ping-pong and other games were great for occupying the time of our Grandchildren.
We will return in the future.

This is one of those rare times where the house is actually better than the pictures (hard to believe, right?!)
We had an incredible stay and can’t wait to book again. The house has absolutely everything you could ever need. It is beautifully decorated and feels like home from the moment you walk in. The views…. The views are unmatched- my husband and I spent every night on the screened in porch watching the sunset. Truly, a little slice of heaven. Julie and Donavon were a pleasure to communicate with.. our experience far exceeded our expectations.

The house, the setting and the owners were special. Many good birding spots nearby. The owners recommendations as to restaurants all panned out.

EVERYTHING was clean and so well organized. The home was equipped with ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you will need. There has been so much thought and care put into the home to make sure your stay is perfect. The layout of home and screened in porches are wonderful. The bed linens and towels were great quality. The home is beautifully decorated. Even the basement was well organized, clean, and great fun for our kids. The drive to the property is gorgeous and the private community is quiet and welcoming.
10 stars!

Our stay with you exceeded our expectations. Our 18 year old said it was her favorite vacation AirB&B ever. The setting was intensely restorative and beautiful, full of some of nature’s best kept secrets. Who knew a wild life refuge could captivate, delight our souls and bring such renewal? But pairing it with a close ocean beach, long walks on the sand and many sweet hours in the delightfully decorated, ultra clean and extremely well appointed beach house, brought us a dream vacation. We want to come back!!!

Mid century decor meets beachy simple chic in a home that sits, and feels, bigger than it is. Great music on the record player and fun games to pass the time between gazing at wildlife and sunsets. Close enough to Rehoboth touristy fun, but plenty distant to feel secluded, too. Was a perfect ending to a week in DC.

We absolutely loved our stay. The place was exactly as advertised. They have really thought out what people would need; nothing was missing. It even had binoculars for the great bird watching from the living room. It was the perfect place to relax, catch up with friends, read and bird watch. Julie was amazing with communicating information and making sure all was good. We definitely would love to plan another trip.

Our family of 6 found this home to be a lovely getaway with beautiful views from the vaulted ceiling living room, master suite and screened in porch. The house is equipped with a great kitchen that we all enjoyed cooking in! The amenities provided are well thought out. We especially enjoyed the gas fireplace and record player! The beds were very comfy too!! The remote location invites you to appreciate nature in all its beauty…stars and the full moon took our breath away and the bay beach is a few steps away! We will return to this new found treasure! Thank you , Julie for being a perfect host!

A short winter stay at this wonderful retreat satisfied all of our needs. The house layout was extremely comfortable, with the large bay windows providing a glorious overview of the marshlands, eagles, and foxes. The decor was a lovely kickback to the 60s with special touches from the owners. The kitchen area was a Mecca for food and drink and as a hangout. Although we were there in winter, I would highly recommend this venue any time of year.

The communication with the host was easy and fast. The toys and pack and play made packing easier with 3 kids. The layout of the house and views all around were great. We love to cook and this kitchen was a dream and well stocked. The house was clean and plenty of room for a family of 5.

This rental was amazing. The views and sunsets were spectacular; the house was beautiful; the walks on the beach were relaxing. The owners of this house really know how to take care of their renters -- everything you can think of was considered from simple things like extra hooks to hang towels and coats on to the kitchen that had everything we could need (no more only one knife and one pot like other rentals!). The house was immaculate as everything looked new, clean and was comfortable, especially the beds. We will definitely back to this gem on the Delaware Bay!

We had an amazing time. The location is serene and the host did an amazing job decorating the home and staying in contact which made us feel comfortable, connected, and safe. We had a group of ladies from 30-60+. Seeing the sunset, having a drink, and gathering by the fireplace created an opportunity for openness that could used for teens as well. We saw people within the community walking their dogs/puppies and they were considerate in giving the dog commands to sit and allowed us to pet their animals. I believe that is what makes a great and respectful community. The host had everything you need to cook in, go outside, or create a fire pit. I could continue to go on and on, but the bottom line is - stay on Shore Drive and you/your family will enjoy yourself! I can’t wait to go back.

The owner could not be more pleasant and accommodating - she was so responsive! The check-in and check-out procedures were easy and quick. The house was spotlessly clean and had a lovely porch that overlooks the refuge. The beach is very close and easy to access across the street and a few doors down. It unfortunately had a lot of seaweed and horseshoe crab shells due to a hurricane that happened right before we arrived but that is of course unpredictable - can't control the weather. For better weather, the owner provides beach chairs, beach towels, inflatable kayaks, and beach toys. The beds were very comfortable; the kitchen has the pans, pots, plates, glassware, coffee maker - anything you need really to make your meals. The bathrooms were very clean. Washer and dryer available for use. The weather for us was very windy and sometimes not conducive for outdoor activities but there are plenty of nearby places to visit if, like us, you happen to plan for the weekend after a big storm. We had a great time despite the weather and would love to go back to really enjoy the nearby beach. The house is lovely and had plenty of room for us. It is as described and the owner is very helpful.

We really enjoyed this home! Julie's attention to detail with amazing cotton sheets, absorbent large bath towels and a well-equipped, labeled kitchen made our stay so much easier. The knives were sharp and the non-stick pans were actually non-stick. The beds and couches were very comfy. And the sunsets...breathtaking! This is a roomy, well-equipped house in a quiet setting perfect for us to have time with family. I would give more than 5 stars!
Also the kitchen island was a bit hit!!!!!

As soon as we got there, our minds relaxed. It's in a great location. When they say it's away from crowds and traffic, they aren't kidding. The view of the refuge is one of the best views we've ever had from a vacation rental. The house is very organized and comfortable. It's newly renovated and beautiful. Sunset views are amazing. I really can't say enough good things about it.
We must have rented at least a dozen VRBO properties, and this one is near the top, if not the best one. If you haven't been to Primehook before, it's definitely a must. We wanted to stay a third night, but our schedules didn't allow it. Hopefully, we will come back to visit again soon.

Great location next to wildlife refuge and beach on the bay. Great seafood and pubs close by. Beach walking, good golf close by as well. House is a beauty, very comfortale with awsome kitchen, living room and bedrooms. Secluded and close (25 minutes) to Cape Henlopen state park and beach which we love.

Wow! Could not have asked for a better experience. To start, the location is peaceful and quiet, and the unobstructed view of the preserve is mesmerizing. Stargazing without any light pollution was second to none.
The house is beautifully decorated, attention to every detail and completely equipped with everything you could possibly need.
Thank you Julie for going out of your way to ensure we had the best possible experience! We look forward to visiting again!

We couldn't have asked for a better setting for our weekend. The area is peaceful and quiet, and only 30 minutes from Rehoboth and Lewes for more activity. The house is clean, extremely well stocked and beautifully layed out. Julie's amazing to deal with. She's prompt to reply and helpful with recommendations. We'll definitely be returning in the future.

We had a wonderful stay here over Labor Day weekend. The house is beautiful and cozy with perfect screened in porches on the front and back of the house. The back of the house has an incredible view over the wildlife reserve, and the sunsets are breathtaking. The beach is just a short walk across the road, and we were lucky to have great weather to enjoy the quiet beachfront. The basement air hockey table was a huge hit with our kids who were down there playing almost every moment we were at the house. And the host is extremely personable and responsive. We would love to visit the house again!

This home is beautiful! The place was so peaceful. If you love nature as much as me, this is the place you want to be. The owners provided many needed amenities. It was wonderful being that close to nature, and close to beach. Also, there were many supplies for the beach which was great because there was no need to pack those items.

Highly recommend this property! It’s a beautiful house, just as pictured, and the location is amazing! Perfect for a quiet, relaxing vacation but close enough to local attractions. If you’re a nature lover this is the place for you. Plenty of wildlife to enjoy and beautiful sunsets in the evening that you can view right from the living room or back porch. The owners provide nearly everything you might need and plenty of special touches that didn’t go unnoticed.

If we could rate higher than 5 stars, we’d give this place a 10! We had a phenomenal experience! The owners are warm, welcoming and very responsive! The place is beautiful, in top notch condition, immaculately clean, well stocked with everything in working condition, and everything organized, labeled, and easy to find. There was even a basket of essential personal items in case we’d forgotten anything!
Best of all, this is an amazing quiet peaceful location. The unadulterated view of the preserve is stunning, and can be soaked in morning noon and night from the main bedroom, living room, and the lovely bug-free screened in porch! We can’t say enough positive things about this place and will definitely be back! Thank you L & D! ☀️
