From 1 to 9 May 2022 I first stayed in the Mathis Retreat next to the rice fields of Penestanan, at walking distance from Ubud, Bali's cultural capital. Every day started by enjoying the calming beauty of the landscape with breakfast served by wonderful, sincerely friendly and respectfully curious (genuine interest in the guest) staff. Management offered me to then to move and stay on the Mathis hill resort at the eastern Bali coast village of Amed. An entirely different but equally exceptional, beautiful place, where staff welcomed me with the same wonderful friendliness and professionalism. Every detail of physical and management environment of both resorts was planned for optimum environmental sustainability - I felt at home in nature, not feeling a polluting consumer, but a welcome part. I miss Bali already. Thank you so much and see you again soon, with best success wishes, Peter van Dijk

The facilities were in disrepair, as was our bedroom - with the door literally hanging off its hinges. The pictures depict the hotel set in a beautiful rice field - whereas in reality the hotel was set in an unkempt field. Would be adequate if priced more realistically.

Wonderful view from the pool, poolside and restaurant over the rice paddies. We stayed in a room that had a small patio with a view of the rice paddies as well, with the sun setting behind the tree line. Altogether a great stay!

Set in a lovely location, a short free shuttle ride from the centre, Mathis is a tranquil and relaxing place to stay. The staff are lovely, the rooms excellent, and the view amazing. The only negative is that they charge slightly more for tours/ taxis than you would pay if you shop around.

We had a very relaxing stay in a spacious and nicely decorated bungalow room. Very friendly and helpful staff. We enjoyed dining at their Terracotta restaurant with views over the Padi fields. Menu was interesting and food perfectly cooked. Personal welcome by the manageress was a nice touch and her recommendations very useful. A highlight was walking to the Ubud town centre through the Padi fields which took just over an hour.

Beautiful room and view! Breakfast each morning was fabulous. Staff were very helpful and went above and beyond. It is a little out of the way of the centre of Ubud, however, but not difficult to get a taxi to/from.

My wife and I stayed at the Kenanga for our honeymoon in Ubud. The place has a unique charm, and is very relaxing. The rice fields in front of the infinity pool and the restaurant are breath taking. The staff is so friendly and always smiling. They made sure that we were satisfied From the moment we arrived until we left. We would highly recommend this place to anyone going to Ubud.

Overall, it was okay. Especially, this hotel operates free shuttle service to Ubud city. However, after sunset, you need to pay 50,000 Rupiah for one-way trip either to the hotel or City.

This boutique hotel is situated around rice fields and beautifully set ... away from the city and noise but they do offer scheduled transport to the Ubud market.
Upon arrival you are welcomed with a welcome drink at the restaurant that overlooks the rice fields. The GM Karine also came to personally welcome us to their property. All staff are super kind and proactive. When they noticed that gekkos were around our room entrance they came to assist. Then they sent a team of staff to catch and shoo away the rest.
When I told the GM that it was my honeymoon at breakfast, we came home later that evening to specially prepared room in celebration of our honeymoon. Heart shaped rose petal arrangement in the bath tub, swans made with towels on the bed, and a honeymoon cake.
The GM Karine has a service excellence standard which sets a standard for the rest of her staff that are excellent as well.

We stayed here three years ago and absolutely loved it. It's still as amazing as in our memory and definitely my favorite hotel in Bali!

Really great for a quieter option in Ubud - set among rice paddies it's super serene so great for couples and friends but less so for families. Rooms are spacious and modern, breakfast was great, the pool was really nice and overlooks the rice paddies. Good value for money. Set a bit out of the hustle and bustle of Ubud centre, but with a free and frequent shuttle really not an issue.
