I took the advice of a fellow reviewer and eschewed staying in a modern hotel to enjoy a classic hotel. I arrived at night when a party was underway and was impressed with the setting. My room, however, was tiny and the air conditioner was unable to go below 82 degrees--an improvement on 100 outside, but a joke. I was freaked out about mosquitoes as I really don't want to get malaria or some other tropical disease and had to use my fly swatter to kill one shortly after settling down in my room. The bed was terrible--small and hard. In the morning, I took a walk around the property and was impressed to see the parrots in an aviary, but the pool was the most uninviting I have seen since Madagascar. The internet proved to be useless during the day and there does not seem to be any coverage in the public spaces.
Despite an overall good ambiance to the hotel and wonderfully helpful and pleasant staff, I was so frustrated not being able to use the web to stay in touch with my office that I moved to another hotel for the duration of my trip. I hate writing this review, because I believe this is a special, historic place with immense charm and excellent staff. Nonetheless, if you are going to Asuncion for more than a day or two, I cannot recommend the hotel.

This hotel has character. Why stay in a glass tower if you can stay in a beautiful historic property. Internet is amazing. Stay in a superior room.

It is a beautiful, well maintained traditional building with all the amenities.
The food was delicious, although some regional food could be added to the menu, such as chipa and chipaguazu.

Visited Paraguay as a tourist with my husband. We decided to stay at GHP because of the pictures, and it did not disappoint! Once inside the complex you can forget that you are in the middle of a city! When looking at a map, the location seems inconvenient, but with all the taxi stands nearby and reasonable fares via taxi, it is totally worth staying here over any other more “convenient” location—after all, the hotel itself is a sight to behold! Beautifully decorated, it heartens back to an older time, and the staff make you feel very welcome. Minibar and laundry prices are VERY reasonable, and otherwise there is a convenience store at about a 5 minute walk. We only ate the included breakfast here, and it was a typical spread, not amazing but not bad. While we never ate any other meals here, I did see many others eat dinner at the hotel—as I think it is a local destination for a nice dinner out.
Free airport pickup, but you must pay for drop-off to the airport. Just email the hotel directly after booking and they confirm a pickup date/time—even in the middle of the night as was in my case!
Stay here—it has character, comfort, and relaxation!

We stayed at this hotel 23 years ago and it was beautiful then. The improvements made since then have made it even better. A fantastic place to stay. A destination in itself.
