A good and comfortable bed, a large room with shared balcony, and a large bathroom are positives for this property.
On the negative side, the shower was hand-held, with half glass door so the floor will get wet. The young woman behind the front desk at check-in had an attitude, and when I asked about a room on the ground floor instead of walking up the rounded stairway - the hotel was empty, (I explained I had an issue with stairs, she literally laughed at me). I didn’t expect that, it was extremely rude. When she realized I was having some anxiety about these stairs she did offer to “try” to find another room, rather than making the arrangement. She didn’t offer one, so it was an empty offer. The rugs in the halls are very worn, so a spruce-up would be advised. Breakfast is expensive so I would suggest having breakfast out, there are plenty of places in St. Jean du Luz, some by the marina or in the covered food markets. Also beware you have to park the car in a lot across the street, so drop off your bags first - and there is NO elevator. We chose the hotel for price and the fact that we had a car and for that reason, it worked out. However, surely young women shouldn’t be at the front desk.

We had a great stay at Hotel Chantaco. We received a very warm welcome from the reception staff. The hotel is charming and has a lot of character. Our room was located on the top floor, unfortunately there is no lift, but the reception staff kindly carried my case up to the room. The food and service at the hotel restaurant was fantastic, accompanied by some good wine. We also had a couple of drinks at the club house and the service was great also. The was complimentary parking across the road. The location of the hotel is great, off the main road, however, this is a disadvantage as one cannot escape the road noise from any of the rooms. Would suggest installing wider glass screen curtains on the bath, to prevent the water flooding the floors whilst taking a shower.
Otherwise would recommend this hotel.

We enjoyed our stay and its a really nice building, but we are talking about a 4* hotel which is fronting a main road and is frankly quite noisy. The hotel has some issues.
The meals are expensive - breakfast for 2 will be £30 and set dinner with a bottle of wine £100. The dining room looks pretty basic and does not reflect these sort of charges and, perversely, the dining and bar seem to be run separately from the hotel and are paid separately.
The very nice pool is surrounded with trees on three sides and is spoiled because in early September it gets no morning sun. In the late afternoon and evening it is gorgeous.
The room service was pretty dire. Coffee and tea facilities are included in the room but there is no milk and if you want some you will be charged 3€. We were constantly asking for the [small] bath towels that disappeared and a bath mat [ditto]. There was effectively no shower because the hand-held shower did not fit into the wall bracket and the shower curtain had been removed. It was 30 degrees outside and the bath-only arrangement seemed strange.
The staff are very pleasant and helpful but the management needs to step back and take a look at what a 4* hotel stands for.

Wifi was not working. The room was dark. We were there for 10 nights. We asked the staff if we could move in another room. They said it was not possible and all rooms are as dark as the one we had. They said that the rooms that benefit from more light are facing the main road and noisy.

We stopped off in Saint Jean de Luz on our way home from Spain. Even though the weather was awful we received a lovely warm welcome from Marie, the receptionist at this beautiful old hotel. It has been totally renovated and the public areas are really impressive. The rooms are excellent, spacious and spotlessly clean. Good shower as well as a nice deep bath, great after a long journey.
Although the weather was very inclement, we could see from our room that the hotel had a pretty formal garden which would be nice to experience in better weather. We didn’t use the hotel restaurant which looked charming. Next time we would like to stay longer.
