About this house rental
Boho beautiful, the free-spirited presence of the Key West Flower Power House vacation rental, has much more in common with the real Key West than the shiny hotels around town. Kindred to memories we share about 'the good old days,' this 1938 wooden house was first renovated by unconventional 'hippy builders' in the 1970's who were creatively rethinking the use of space of Old Town wooden dwellings, around the same time the first street buskers where inventing the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. This home embodies the whimsical Key West house style that came out of that time period.
Breaking down architectural design labels, nearly every room received French doors that open to deep porches that span the width of the house. A spacious living room was added, with soaring ceilings and transom windows that rise clear to the roof peak. Refusing to be limited by stultifying design, original glassed-in porches became alternative sleeping spaces, while the adjoining carriage house became a whimsical seashell cottage.
Decades after the hippy and military days of Key West, our company continues to watch this house be re-invented by artistic owners who've added their own sense of bohemian flair, embracing an eclectic mix of new with old, reflecting a love for island art and the Caribbean Sea. Nothing boxy or modular, no-way modern-flat pack style anyway anywhere. Informal island comfort is presented with a love of tropical color, a down-home style that celebrates the beauty of nature and what's naturally imperfect. To sum it up, our Flower Power House harkens back to what Key West still means for many - anti-style, freedom from convention, an occasional gypsy chicken mingling with guests in the garden.
Interior Layout: Ultimately, the house was reconfigured to offer three separate areas that are joined together as one. The ground level, at the front of the house, features a spacious living room, with cathedral ceilings and connecting fully equipped kitchen. Here we also find two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The 1st bedroom offers a king size bed and the 2nd bedroom a queen size bed. French doors open to the porch in both of these bedrooms. Accessed through bedroom two with a doorway for privacy, is a sleeping porch. Set with two twin beds, it adequately functions as a 3rd bedroom and is ideal for children sleeping close by.
A 4th and 5th bedroom, one full bathroom, a galley kitchen, and sitting room and are found on the 2nd floor, which is accessed via an exterior staircase. A split floor plan provides maximum privacy with a master bedroom with a glassed in porch and king size bed on one side of the house, and two twin beds with a window view to the pool on the opposite end.
Back downstairs, and connected at the back of the house is the adorable 1.5 story 6th bedroom. Set in the artist-owner's cute re-design of the carriage house, this is an intimate boho space that was once featured in Coastal Magazine. Exterior French doors connect with the garden in the back and front. With a sense of playfulness, stucco pastel faux painted walls inside form a colorful creamy backdrop for a flamboyant adornment of sea shells like icing on a cake. Open beam ceilings on the main level plus a kitchenette and a comfy sitting area set with shabby chic finds, make the cottage suite feel larger than it is. A bunk in the corner provides an extra sleeping space if you need it.
A short hall-way stairwell leads to the half-story 2nd level sleeping space with a king size bed and a one-of-a-kind witty 'she-sells-sea-shells' theme bathroom. Definitely tropical and different than what we live with day-to-day, this space is an artists' boho love nest. French doors off the back open to the garden to create a little private sitting space steps from the rest of the house.
Exterior Layout: This whimsical Key West house is part of a private gated mini-compound set back from the street. Covered porches that run the entire length of the house maximize the opportunity for indoor-outdoor living. Step down off the porches to the large landscaped garden and just beyond enjoy a 40' X 16' swimming pool and more gardens ample for lounging. Outdoor furniture is place for lounging on the porches and around the pool. A little piece of old Key West, not too shiny, no-way modern sterile.
The swimming pool and middle part of the garden are shared with a recently updated 3 bedroom town home on the opposite side of the compound. For a larger group, please inquire about renting our Family Reunion compound property, which includes this townhome called, A Tropical Tradition.

Great space for us to gather away from the craziness but close enough.

We love this house and have stayed here before. The management was very rude and went out of the way to NOT be helpful. Sad, especially with the price tag of this house rental. Again, EXCELLENT and super fun house!

This place was perfect for our large group of ladies. There was plenty of room for all of us to be comfortable. Having the pool was great too. The location was convenient to Duvall St & Smathers Beach. I would definitely recommend staying here!

We rented bikes and were able to get all over the island within 10 minutes.

This property is very deceiving from the professional pictures shown in the listing. It is very high priced rental that needs a lot of TLC. Please notice in the pictures what is missing. The kitchen has cracked countertop tiles, peeling doors and all skillets needed to be replaced that we had to buy one to use while we were there. The owners were not willing to let us cancel due to the Covid-19. They only offered us 50% credit to be used in 6 months. This place would not be worth that much for 5 days. The management company would not return my emails while we were on property. They have a sign saying bugs and rats are normal so deal with it. Owners need to fix the holes in the roof/wall line to prevent rats from scampering in the walls at night freaking out our kids and the termite dust on the beds each night was a very big problem. No one wants termite dust dropping on them while they sleep. Proper termite prevention would prevent this from happening. Save your money and stay somewhere else. The bonus was the huge porch. It was nice sitting on the porch but it still needs painting and some work. The pool was nice but we had to clean it everyday. Plan on working while on vacation. The property inside and out needs taken care of.

The Flower Power House was the big quirky house experience we were looking for. It accommodated the big group we needed it too. However with an older house there were things that didn’t work or weren’t in the best shape (light switches, outlets, out door ceiling fans). It also needed more lighting around the grounds and back to the cottage. There were neighborhood grocery stores and liquor stores near by but Duval St and the beach was minutes away by Bike or Uber not within walking distance. We had a fun experience staying in this historical home.

This was a home that has the potential to be an excellent place for a large group. We rented the house with both floors and the cottage. The pool (very clean) and porch were perfect places to relax for our group of 12, but there were a few things that I would like to mention so that the property managers are aware. Overall, the home was fine, but there were some issues, that if addressed, could easily make it an outstanding stay. While there were 3 bedrooms in the main house, you could only access them by going through one another's rooms, and a bathroom. Just a bit inconvenient if someone was using the bathroom, and you needed to get to your room...you had to wait. If someone was still sleeping, you had to tip-toe through their room. Not sure this was accurately described in the listing. In all fairness, there was a door leading to the outside from the second bedroom, but it was quite rotted at the bottom, with a large hole, so we had to cover that to keep bugs and rodents from entering. For the first 2 days there was no hot water in the cottage. The maintenance man did reply right away when I called him, and sent someone out within the hour, but it took a second visit to fix. The smoke detectors in the cottage also had to be taken down because they beeped every 5 seconds, and you were not able to sleep with the beeping. I also mentioned this to maintenance. The kitchen in the main house was a bit outdated (cracked tiles, handle missing off one of the drawers), but well stocked with cooking tools. Oven and fridge were clean. Could use more drinking glasses; I think there were only about 6-8. The bathroom for the bedrooms (on the main floor) was VERY VERY slow draining. If you ran water for more than a minute, there's a chance the sink would overflow. The home desperately needs some TLC. Rotted windowsills, burnt out light bulbs, dirty patio furniture pads, shelves missing in bathroom vanity. For a house that holds 12+ people, there were only 3 rolls of toilet paper in the entire place for the whole week. If some of these improvements were made, I would be comfortable giving it a 5 star rating.

The property was not what we had expected from the pictures, but the house was huge and everyone had space. They didn’t have a gas grill which was a little disappointing because we had 6 kids with us and grilling required more set up time. The property managers were fantastic and gave us a lot of ideas for things to do and places to eat with a large group. The property was close to beaches and the kids loved the pool.

This property exceeded our expectations. Our group was 10 people and everyone could sleep comfortably. This was one of the best properties I have ever stayed at in Key West!! Loved everything about it. Close to everything like it says!! We all had a wonderful experience!

It was great to be able to get our entire group together under one roof. The walking distance to everything was just fine and coming back to a pool and a cool little bungalow was really an awesome experience.
