About this cabin rental
Magnificent sunsets over Lake Superior's Big Bay. Our winter guests (snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, snow-shoers, and those looking to curl up in a cozy cabin) will appreciate our plowed circle drive. For the protection of our cleaning personnel and guests during the 2023 rental season, we've built in a one-day cushion between check-ins.
Beautiful, two-bedroom cabin on Lighthouse Road in Big Bay, MI. As you walk in the front door you are greeted with spectacular views of Lake Superior through the living room bow window. Other custom windows bring in light and nature everywhere you turn. A custom-built circular staircase leads you up to the master bedroom with a king-size bed. You'll get spectacular views of Lake Superior from the Master Bedroom which includes a private bath and its own private deck. The downstairs bedroom has a full/full bunk bed which can sleep four. The upstairs loft provides additional views of Lake Superior, a cozy reading area, and with a queen sleeper sofa can double as a third bedroom. The cabin is well suited for six to eight - six adults or four adults and up to four children.
The cabin has a well-equipped modern kitchen with a gas stove, a dining room table with seating for six, and two full baths. The downstairs bath has a tub/shower with tile surround and the Master Bedroom bath has a shower with tile surround. The huge wrap-around deck includes a screened-in gazebo to keep you away from the bugs, a gas grill, and a food prep area. The cabin also has a newly installed two-zone air conditioning system, with an outdoor compressor, to keep you comfortable during hot/humid weather.
“The Huron Mountains encompass the most wild and rugged territory in Michigan. It is a region of low, yet surprisingly rugged mountains, swamps, lakes, and high plateaus.” (Huron Mountains Summit Post) The Huron Mountain Range runs from the Marquette area north and west through Big Bay and beyond, and along with the sandstone cliffs of Salmon Trout Point provides a distant backdrop for sunsets over the bay. The large lot, 225’ of Lake Superior shoreline, gives you a wide-angle view of the bay to the west. Lake Superior has been telling her serene and rugged story for thousands of years, and each daily chapter (weather permitting) ends with a sunset over Salmon Trout point. Every sunset you celebrate from Huron Horizons is one that has never been seen before and will never be seen again. Yes, they are that special.
Make sure you set aside some time to explore Marquette during your stay. Marquette "Queen City of the North" is about a 30 minute, beautiful drive from Big Bay, and is perhaps the most picturesque city in Michigan. We're a little biased but we believe that to be true. Marquette has many wonderful shops and restaurants (our favorite being The Vierling which overlooks the Ore Dock and Marquette's beautiful Lower Harbor). While in Marquette we would also highly recommend visiting Presque Isle and allowing enough time to hike and explore this wonderful peninsula. The Marquette area provides tons of outdoor opportunities including year-round world-class mountain bike and cross-country ski trails.

Very well done, comfortable and the best view ever. Everything one needs for their stay is provided.

This house was a great place to stay in Big Bay, MI. We had visited the area a few years back and decided to return for some much needed R & R. The rooms and beds are comfortable, the furniture is newer and comfortable, and the bathrooms were immaculate. Their are houses on both sides of this property but the woods keep it very private and the waterfront is gorgeous. There's a nice area outside with a fire pit which we enjoyed. We made a trip to Marquette and spent the day sightseeing and eating at a wonderful restaurant there. If you don't want to travel, there's Thunderbay Inn, about a 5 minute drive.
The communication was good about access to the house and knowing there was someone we could call if we had questions or needed something.
We'll be back!

We had a great time! The house was great! The view was amazing! We've been coming to the UP for 9 years now and this is the best place we've stayed. We had a blast!!

This home is so cozy with amazing views. We were able to see every sunset at the cabin. The home is much nicer than the photos on this website. I love staying at places where I cannot get cell reception. It forces me to get away from my work. This is a sacred space and I can’t wait to be back!

The property is absolutely adorable and the views of Lake Superior are spectacular. The house was perfect for our stay. The kitchen was well equipped and we had plenty of room for us and four adult children. Thanks Huron Horizon for a great vacation!

It’s a beautiful and cozy home to stay in. The sunset views and waterfront view was absolutely gorgeous. The ONLY thing this place is missing is a hot tub- that would have made my rating a 5/5. Host was very quick to respond when we had a problem with empty propane on the grill and made it right! We did have to supply lighter fluid as well as paper towels. It would have been nice for there to be stocked paper towels and toilet paper. We had a total of 3 adults and 2 children so by the end of the week we were almost completely out. The mosquitoes were really bad in the house but we made the best of it!

This was our 2nd visit, and it was wonderful. The cottage is so well-cared-for, and they have thought of everything to make their guests feel at home. The place is so clean and windows are shiny. LOVE the windows. The mattress in the master bedroom is so comfy! I need to find out what the brand is. I hated to leave on the last day. Everything is so peaceful and tranquil there, and we saw so much wildlife—bald eagle, ducks, turkeys and so many deer! We counted SEVENTEEN one night at about 8:30 pm. Huron Horizons is my favorite cottage ever. Also, we tried a restaurant recommended by the owner in the guest booklet—The Vierling. It was great. Also loved the Iron Bay place in Marquette. We also ate at the Lumberjack Tavern and that is always fun. Hungry Hollow has a great little breakfast. Thank you for sharing such a lovely place with your guests.

What an amazing property!! We visited at the beginning of April 2024. While most attractions we still closed for the season we were able to enjoy a couple of waterfalls, Marquette, and Houghton. Then the blizzard warning hit…so we were locked in for a day. Ummm ok- with the view from the living room I was happy to watch the storm roll in! And the sunsets….Shut Up! Amazing!
The hosts were so kind and thoughtful checking on us and making sure we had everything we needed. My husband is already looking at our calendar to decide when we can go back! ♥️

The home was beautiful, clean, well stocked. The location is serene and the views are stunning. We cannot wait to return for more rock hunt hikes, rock hunting, beaches and waterfalls!!

My family uses Vrbo extensively including multiple trips to Michigan and this now our second trip to the U.P. although the first to this area and property. This is the first time a property has felt like coming home. You can tell this isn’t a developer’s property but is instead the loved home of a family that allows others to use it when they’re not. A gas range and other quality appliances were a welcome surprise. We are all cooks at home and there’s no McDonald’s up here so a proper kitchen was great to have. Everything was just comfortable and welcoming and the views were excellent. We just appreciate the time so much.

We will be retuning for sure!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Huron Horizons. If you're looking for a peaceful, private escape with woods and water, this is the place! The property location was perfect and the property itself was spotless and had everything you could possible need for your stay. Just bring your groceries and you're all set! Nancy was great to work with for any questions that we had. Would definitely recommend a stay here!!

We can't say enough about this rental. This is our second time staying and it was even better than the last. The house was incredibly clean when we got there and has all the amenities you would ever need. The property managers are friendly and available if needed. Our favorite part of the house is the view on the bay. Being able to wake up to the view, end our evenings with the beautiful sunsets, and go to bed with the waves crashing is enough to keep calling us back. My youngest son and I were able to watch an eagle hunt for fish and bring it back to the nest while we were paddle boarding one morning. We just can't say enough about this beautiful property. We understand why it is not, but if this was a dog friendly rental we may be forced to spend our whole summer UP there.

We thoroughly loved everything about this beautiful place located right on Lake Superior and highly recommend it.

The location was quiet and remote. Perfect for our family to enjoy the beauty if Supervisor. A personal family favorite was having the windows open and falling asleep to the waves.
Would definitely return to stay here again.

We've stayed at several nice cottages on various parts of the Lake Superior coasts, but this one was certainly the best. The house is beautifully designed and decorated, with great views from the living room, the deck, and the master bedroom and its balcony.
We had no insect problems, but if we had, the lovely little screened gazebo-like structure out at the end of the deck would have allowed us to enjoy the outdoors in spite of them.
The kitchen is among the very best appointed and stocked I've had the pleasure of doing a little cooking in. Terrific gas stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffee maker, with every pot, pan and utensil you could want and plenty of great china, glassware and bowls.
Plenty of comfortable seating both inside and out and very comfortable beds.
We didn't use the TVs, but the internet service was excellent and the Bose Bluetooth speaker was much appreciated.
Can't say enough good things about Nancy Gaines, the Property Manager, who made everything easy and pleasant.
Would certainly happily stay again!

Excellent property and everything you need for a week by the lake. Location is close to many hikes with a sandy beach and lighthouse nearby. Superb views of the lake from all main areas. We had no problem sleeping our three young children and having space for everyone to play and relax.

I was tempted to not write how perfect this home was and keep it a secret, but my better side intervened. I cannot begin to say how perfect this home and all it's amenities are. It truly felt like a home away from home from the moment we walked thru the door. We trekked north to celebrate my wife's birthday and share some quality family time making memories! Every aspect of the home was exactly as promised and our host were attentive to any and all details!

We were very pleased and comfortable with our stay; the house was thoughtfully stocked, including the kitchen - it even had sharp knives! The owners were communicative and even shipped us something for free that we'd accidentally left behind upon our departure. Thank you for a relaxing getaway.

If you want to stay on Big Bay, this is the place. Large windows both up and down looking out over Lake Superior. Nothing like waking up in the morning looking out over the lake. The cabin is clean and cozy and has everything you need to enjoy your stay. Appreciated the spiral staircase going to the second story, not just your typical metal one. Somebody put a lot of work into that with all the woodworking. Thanks Jim and Ginger the owners and the local caretakers Nancy and Don for a pleasant stay. A special thanks to Nancy and Don for chatting with me about the Big Bay area.

The property and location were perfect. It is beautifully situated and the property very true to the pictures presented.
The property manager, Nancy, was amazing throughout the planning stages and during our stay. She went out of her way to take care of us; responding to questions quicker than expected, whether it was related to the property or hikes in the area. She even took my wife on a hike one day to show her a good place that close to the property for morning hikes. I cannot say enough about her.

My husband and I had a nice relaxing time at this property. The cabin is nestled in the trees and right on the shore in the Big Bay of Lake Superior. We enjoyed the spectacular sunsets and the waves lapping at the shore lulled us to sleep each night. We also enjoyed the history of the surrounding area and even watched the Jimmy Sterwart movie "Anatomy of a Murder" which is based off an actual murder that occurred in the 50's. Marquette is a nice drive away. Be sure to check out Yellow Dog Falls off of 510. So worth the hike! The property owner has a great folder with loads of information about the cabins amenities as well as things to do in the surrounding areas. This was very helpful. Would not hesitate to recommend this place to friends and would hope to return someday.

From amazing sunsets to starry night filled skies, Huron Horizons delivered an incredible relaxing getaway. This quaint cottage is clean, modern and perfectly situated on Lake Superior. We were even able to launch our kayaks from the shoreline and explore the cool rock formations on each side of the bay. The cottage is cozy and extremely comfortable and offers all of amenities of home. The views from both inside and outside the house are AMAZING! We’ve rented a lot of VRBO properties over the years and this is one of our all time favorites! If you love being on the water, then this is place is definitely for you!

We had an absolutely wonderful visit. The house is in perfect repair, all the finishes were beautiful and really let you enjoy the amazing view right away, no settling in needed. The dishes and silverware were nicer than we even had at home, we felt like we were visiting family. This is a MUST stay property.

My husband and I stayed at Huron Horizons for 5 days in late July. This home is THE perfect spot if you're looking for peace and quiet, cleanliness and comfort, and a spectacular view from any location inside or outside of the property. We are used to very warm summers, especially during the month of July, so temperatures in the 60s and low 70s were lovely. Lake Superior is quite cold but still refreshing and beautifully clear. We really enjoyed hiking on the Top of the World trail and a loop around Presque Isle State Park as well as grabbing beers at Ore Dock Brewing Co. and Blackrocks Brewery. We chose to spend a majority of our time at the property because it was so wonderful. We would would highly recommend this property to anyone! Enjoy your stay :)

We were so happy with the house and its beautiful views of the lake. It had a really big deck, large yard, and huge fire pit so there were many places to sit and get a great view. We also appreciated the cleanliness of the house. It was exceptional. We truly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to relax with excellent views!

We had a lovely stay. The house was incredibly clean, well-stocked, comfortable, and beautiful. The hosts were easy to communicate with and very friendly. The view of Big Bay each day was a gorgeous site. Powel is a tiny little town. Not much here or nearby. For good food, you need to travel to Marquette (35-40 min). There is a sandy beach a short walk down the shoreline where we spent the day. The shoreline at the house is covered with various sizes of rounded stones. The water was a bit warmer at the beach.

Peaceful stay
Our family of four (kids 6 and 16) rented this house for a week. We brought our kayaks with us and spent the week paddling around the bay, which was perfect. We did several hikes in the area, and the kids swam (brr!). We enjoyed the lovely views of the water from almost every room, and spent every evening around the fire pit watching the sunset. There is not a lot to “do” if you’re looking for entertainment, but if you’re looking for a peaceful spot to relax, unwind, and enjoy nature, look no further!
Property manager reached out a couple of days ahead of time by text and was responsive, although we didn’t end up needing anything!
Would stay again!
