THE ACCOMMODATION AND THE ROOMS

Had a wonderful stay at this well-equipped home away from home. It was cool to stay in a castle! Iacopo took great care of us - helping us with things we needed before we even go there. The place is close to many good restaurants and we drove to Chianti and Siena for a quick visit. The pool was a bonus especially sine we were there in August. I can imagine how wonderful this would be as a wedding or anniversary venue.

I just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy, in which my group of 14 stayed in four different regions and vacation rentals. Of all the places we stayed, hands down our group liked our stay at Castello Volognano the best! The property is magnificent, the views are incredible, and the pool was so refreshing on the hot August days we spent there. Above all, Iacopo, the gentleman who manages the property, made us feel like royalty during our stay. No request was to big. He arranged everything with me prior to our stay: from transfers, to shopping lists, to dinners with a chef at the castle. Everything here went seamlessly. No one in my group of 14 wanted to leave! If you are visiting Tuscany or the Florence area, you must stay at Castello Volognano. During your stay, I highly recommend doing the wine tasting with lunch, and having at least a few means catered by a chef overlooking the beautiful Tuscan countryside. And I can't forget, the olive oil they make is amazing as well. Thank you Castello Volognano for making our first trip to Italy so memorable!

I traveled with a group of 10 close friends for a 2 week trek across Italy. The Castello di Volognano was the highlight of our trip and my only regret is that we didnt stay here longer. The castle is on the top of one of many rolling hills of Tuscany and the views could not be better. The owner, Patrizia, was patient and accommodating and was extremely helpful when booking our stay despite me being difficult and changing the dates multiple times. The property manager Iacopo was outstanding and unbelievably helpful. His wine tour was wonderful and had a more homey, friendly feel than other commercial wineries that we had toured before. He also helped arrange a private dinner cooked by a personal chef and it was delicious. A surprise bonus that I didnt see mentioned in the listing was a fleet of 20 turtles that happily live in the castle garden. The only thing missing was a castle cat (or three)! We would not hesitate to come back to Volognano. If you are looking for a once in a lifetime, perfect vacation in a castle, stop looking and book this now!

How would I summarize our experience at Castello di Volognano? 10 out of 10. The castle is more than a place to sleep during your travels. It is a destination in and of itself. For just five days, my family and I felt like Italian dignitaries. We received a royal greeting from Iacopo, the castle's concierge. Perfecting the art of being invisible yet always available, he graciously attended to our every need. We arrived and were greeted with a beautiful glass of Chianti as we listened to Iacopo give an interesting talk about the castle's wine and olive oil production. We enjoyed charcuterie, a tasting of the vineyards' wines, and a light dinner, which included the best lasagna I have ever tasted. Inside the castle, you are immersed in history, art, and architecture like no other. You can't help but feel that you've transported back in time but forward in social status. The backyard will be your gathering place for morning coffee and late-afternoon cocktails. Being on the top of the hill, your views of the Tuscan countryside are as magnificent as the sounds and scents wafting through the cooling breeze. Every single one of my family loved the castle. Ours was a busy trip. Our only regret was not booking one more night just to relax and enjoy our surroundings. We will return as soon as we can! It was a blissful experience, and I highly recommend it.

The description does not do it justice. The We plan to go back. Iacopo is a gem. He was so responsive. He helped prepare our meal as part of our cooking class, and he gave a great tour of the winery. Be sure to get up and visit the church at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. It is worth it.

We were a group of 5 adult couples. Not all had private bathroom/shower (see their description). Still, this is a huge (!) place, with plenty of big living/dining/game rooms. The kitchen is small-ish but works. The building/castle is truly amazing, you will be impressed, and the grounds are beautiful. We were less impressed with housekeeping (just daily bed making, but no new linens all week, and fresh towels only upon request even if they were placed on the floor). Most of us weren't happy with the mattresses. A pre-stocked refridgerator for our late-pm arrival would have been nice (no such option) - that would be super helpful when arriving from long distance and have no idea where to buy what. Now, the castle is an authentic 1000 year-old building, and while all that is really special and impressive, don't expect window screens (big bugs find their way into the bedrooms), no modern plumbing, and showers and drains are so-so. So that's the trade-off. The location is amazing, quiet, hill-top with incredible Tuscan views - something you'll write home about! You feel like a king up there. There's a groundskeeper who's very helpful with where to go, what to see, etc. The nearest town is ~15 min by car, with a train-station (to get into Florence), a really big grocery store, plenty of small restaurents, etc. Really everything you need is there. Perhaps except for the bedrooms' non-biting bugs and the mattress quality, this is a spectacular place you'll not forget.
