About this villa rental
La Sonine is a beautiful stone-built villa, nestled in 5500 sq meters of garden and wood-lands just 1km walk from the walled hill-top village of St. Paul de Vence, one of the world's most beautiful medieval villages. We are in a unique position bordered by protected forest lands and therefore offer rare peace and privacy in the heart of Cote d'azur. The grounds are extensive with lawn for croquet and badminton, forest for shady naps and children's adventures and various sunny terraces for basking. The villa is typically French in style with ancient terra-cotta floors, arched windows and simple elegant furnishings. Inside, there are 4 double bedrooms, all en-suite. We completed a full remodelling of all bathrooms and kitchen in 2013 - all our guest comment on what a pleasure it is to be in a villa so well and beautifully equipped! With 12 years rental experience behind us, we can help make your gathering unique - we even know an opera singer to serenade you. Our garden and terraces make a gorgeous place to host a dinner or special event. Just email us to explore how we can help.
Underfloor heating provides comfort to our Christmas and mid-season guests. Two bedrooms have spacious private terraces, one opens onto the garden and tiled pool and the 4th enjoys its own access from outside. Check out a video of the grounds here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgMUQKM8UVA
The furniture and furnishings all originate in France, China, Japan and Indonesia and have been carefully chosen to create a simple but elegant Asian/French atmosphere.
The cupola-ceilinged dining room seats 8 and the spacious and light sitting-room has a fabulous fireplace, card table and gorgeous artwork. The kitchen has just been remodelled\fully equipped, including 2 fridges, Nespresso, Quooker, ice-maker, food processor, micro-wave and lots of cook-books, 2 ovens for our culinary guests and underfloor heating for Christmas and off-season guests.
In the basement is a large TV/Games room with flat-screen T.V.,
DVD player, DVDs, Ping Pong, Table Football, books, games and sofa-bed. The separate Laundry room is also in the basement and has Washer and Dryer and sink - very practical for large groups and busy families.
There are two bedrooms upstairs, both enjoying lovely private terraces and en-suite bathrooms. The spacious upstairs master bedroom, has a queen-size bed and walk-in wardrobe while the smaller 'blue and white' room has two single beds which can be pushed together to make a king if required. The master bedroom, with its king-size four-poster bed is located on the ground
floor and opens up onto the garden and pool area. This spacious room has a study area (with fax machine, scanner, printer) and sofa-bed should one wish to accommodate a child within the same room. The fourth bedroom is in the basement but is light and airy, due to a large glass door than offers independent access. This 'Japanese' room, enjoys a modern bathroom with double sinks in glass and multi-head shower.
Outside, the dining terrace off the kitchen seats 12 and makes an ideal place to eat during the day (when the cover of the oak tree provides welcome shade) and in the evening. The gas barbeque makes for easy al-fresco cooking and, if you prefer, there is also a charcoal version. The covered terrace off sitting room makes a lovely place for drinks and a quiet retreat from sun and pool. The stone and tile pool (4.5m x 11m) is heated, has an automatic, retractable security cover. The pool is salinated as opposed to chlorinated - salinsation is much gentler on the eyes and skin, having a PH level that is the same as one's eyes. It is surrounded by grass which is lovely under-foot and there are plenty of sun-loungers and chairs.
Bikes, heaters, fans, stroller, cot, highchair and some toys for children are all provided. Our storage 'chalet' is a wonderful place for children to play house, have camp-outs etc. La Sonine is a highly secure property. It can only be accessed by electronically controlled gates covered. All access points are under 24hr-digital CCTV surveillance, linked to a Response Centre. Fire and Emergency panic buttons are in place that link directly to a voice-response centre. There is also a sophisticated burglar/bandit alarm
system and 2 safes. Saying this we have never had any issues with security.
In terms of location, we are 15-20 minutes drive from Nice airport. St Paul de Vence is an ancient walled city, made famous as artists such as Picasso, Chagall and other impressionists settled here. Chagall's house is just down the road from us. Every year, over 2.500.000 people come and visit St Paul. Statistically, it is the third most visited historical site in France after the Mont St Michel and the Chateau de Versailles. St Paul 's landscape, natural site, architecture and buildings are all protected by law as part of the national heritage. Its uniquely mild climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year means that it
is wonderful place to visit summer and winter alike. It also enjoys a unique geographical position with the Med, the river Loup, wonderful museums, ancient villages and fantastic dining all within 15 minutes drive and La Fondation Maeght in walking distance. I love this art gallery because it is small enough to visit with children and lots of it is outside so they can run around. It is very much an artists town - to find out more visit:
http://www.saint-pauldevence.com/tourism_uk.html.
We love the location because there is so much to do a stone's throw away. You can be swimming in the Mediterranean Sea in about 15 minutes drive or visiting some other stunning local villages such as Tourettes sur Loup, Vence (where there are some fantastic music festivals), Biot, Valbonne, Grasse . The river Loup runs through a pretty village called Villneuve Loubet which is about 10 minutes away and it is nice to take the kids there with fishing nets and a picnic. There is also a fantastic tree climbing place here which our kids adore. There are 2 Michelin starred restaurants in St Paul and others a short drive away. Nice itself is about a 20 minutes drive and I think a trip is never complete without a stroll down the promenade and lunch on the beach. Frankly, there is so much to do and mnone of it is difficult because we are so central. Saying this, we are away from the crowds and traffic on the coast in July and August and as we are tucked up against the National Park we could be in the middle of nowhere.
Many of our guests say that they don't do half as much exploring as they had intended as the villa is so comfortable that it is difficult to leave.
Here are some comments from the guestbook we keep at the house.

The villa more than lived up to its description on the excellent web-site. Very comfortable, very spacious, very comprehensively and tastefully furnished, with everything we could have wished for in terms of extras. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone to anyone who, like us, prefers the comfort, convenience and congeniality of a villa, rather than several hotel rooms to meet the needs of a group.

Idyllic, peaceful, beautiful and a wonderful place for a family holiday. What a contrast from Doha, Qatar, Manchester, Dubai, Southampton and Scotland. Thank you for all your help, advice and recommendations. This is a very special place and we would love to return. Excellent place to celebrate our 60th birthday. Thanks for the Champagne.

We have had a lovely time in the Villa and out. It is lovely and big and the forest is very exciting. St Paul is a lovely little walk and we have found a shortcut! We have been to some really nice beaches in Juan les Pins and Antibes. The swimming pool was excellent and all the floats for it were very good. All the bedrooms are very nice and the beds are very comfy. We have had a lovely time. Thank you very much! Liverpool, England

We loved every minute of our stay at La Sonine. Beautifully laid out, spacious, airy and cool, it was the perfect spot for our group of six adults. The pool area is lovely and got lots of daily use during our stay, along with the brilliantly easy to use gas barbecue and blissfully shady chill-out lounge area. One of our favourite aspects of the holiday was walking into St Paul de Vence for morning bakery supplies and coffee in the bustling cafe at the bottom of the hill. Stunning views along the way. We also loved the proximity to the Maeght Foundation - a gorgeous gallery in amazing grounds - and to Nice for the Monday brocante in Cours Saleya, plus more galleries and our favourite restaurant, Le Galet right on the beach in Promenade des Anglais. The house itself - clearly a very much-loved family home - is thoughtfully and tastefully designed, with ample space for everyone and air conditioning to keep it cool in the heat. Fabulously well equipped kitchen for big family meals enjoyed on the terrace at lunch and in the evenings with candles and great garden lighting. We can’t praise La Sonine and it’s very helpful and knowledgeable owners Tim and Juliet enough. We’d love to come back one day soon. Thank you for a magical and memorable holiday.

The villa is a perfect place for a large family taking a holiday in the South of France. the hosts are super attentive with full local English speaking support. The location near Saint-Paul-de-Vence is ideal for tours to the sea or to the mountains - or longer tours to Monaco or Cannes. The villa is very beautiful. It is also very charming and comes with a lot of personality. It is like a real home with all relevant amenities and a very well equipped kitchen. The bathrooms are very modern and the aircon efficient and quiet. There is plenty of space both inside and outside. The terrace and pool are situated exactly where it should be - very close to the kitchen. It cannot be better for a super relaxing family holiday. We fully enjoyed our time there and would be very happy to come back any time.

We had a wonderful two weeks at La Sonine with family and friends. The villa was beautiful and perfectly kitted out with everything you could need. It was perfect for adults and small children, who spent most of the days in the lovely pool and exploring the gardens, and would also be great for older children, with a games room and cinema in the basement. There is a bbq and large terrace for meals and evening drinks outside and the surroundings are peaceful.
You could happily spend a lot of time at the villa and in the pool but it is also a great place for exploring all of the beautiful hilltop villages that surround it. It is only a five minute drive from St Paul de Vence for the morning boulangerie run and afternoon ice creams, and short drives away from multiple villages with morning markets to explore. We also had a few beach trips to Antibes and Nice, only about half an hour from the house.
Communications with the owners and manger were great. Annette offered a warm welcome and was on hand for any questions throughout the stay. The Fallowfields offered a welcome document with a huge amount of local information with top places to explore.
We were very sad to leave and can’t wait to come back again soon!

Heavenly
The best VRBO rental we ever had. Wife and 20 year old daughter had the best time ever. Do not hesitate if you are 8 people. Will still have all the privacy you want. You will want for nothing in this most beautiful home. Will be back next year😀😀😀

La Sonine is beautiful, well-appointed and comfortable and was the perfect place for a summer getaway with my husband, daughter and friends. Juliet provided a wealth of information about the area, things to do, restaurants, etc. which was so helpful in knowing where to make reservations and which other villages to visit. The communication was seamless and the property managers were so kind and helpful (and were only a text away if we had a question!). We already miss La Sonine and St. Paul-de-Vence and can't wait to return!

La Sonine is the most amazing villa. The highlight is the (non-chlorinated) pool and the huge garden surrounded by pine trees - it really is a serene spot. The house really wants for nothing - it’s one of the best appointed villas we’ve ever rented and the decor and artwork set it apart from others - all beautifully done. You can tell that a lot of time and care has gone into it. The beds and bathrooms are all generous. We were there with four teenagers and could easily have had more people with us. The communication was excellent with the owners - the guide was the most comprehensive I’ve ever seen. Check in was really smooth - the property manager, Annette, was excellent and on hand to help us when needed. Our only regret was not having more time to explore the area - but we will return for sure!

Culture, Nature and Art in a gorgeous, luxury setting
This is our 2nd time at La Sonine this year, and we will definitely be back again. The house is beautiful, very comfortable (our group's age range: between 21 and 86) with wonderful interior design. We had many lovely dinners under the tree with our family and friends, overlooking the stunning gardens and swimming pool. The owner Juliet is super helpful, and the local property manager is on hand whenever you have a question. Flowers and wine were waiting for us when we arrived after a long journey. I can honestly say, one of the loveliest places you can find. The village (St Paul de Vence) is stunning and has wonderful restaurants, art galleries and locals play jeu de boules in front of Cafe de La Place. A stay at La Sonine is highly recommended.

Schöner kann Urlaub nicht sein!
Es ist ein wunderbares Haus, geschmackvoll eingerichtet, komfortabel und ruhig in einem prachtvollen Garten! Und ein großartiger Swimmingpool mit Salzwasser.

Paradise!
We spent a wonderful week in this villa, together with our two daughters and my wife’s parents. The villa is simply beautiful, with a unique combination of comfort and style. Tastefully furnitured and well decorated, the elegant house offered plenty of space and privacy for our mixed travel company. It comes fully equipped and well stocked, with all modern amenities, which makes things much easier. When the coffee machine had a technical problem, it was immediately replaced by the owners, without any hesitation.
But what made it truly exceptional is the lovely garden with a diverse set of trees and flowers and a spacious swimming pool. This is a genuine little paradise, very quiet and relaxing. It was exactly what my wife and I needed to disconnect from our busy jobs.
The house is conveniently located, only a short walk from the village.
We immensely enjoyed our week in this house.

If you’re struggling to narrow down your property search in this beautiful and fascinating region, please let me help. If what you’re looking for is a beautiful, private villa that combines comfort, style and thoughtful design then you’ve found it. La Sonine is so sensitively appointed and so intelligently equipped that it offers endless possibilities for coming together with family and friends, whatever the season, whatever the time of day, whatever the mood. In the variable temperatures of early May, we had long, leisurely breakfasts al fresco on the kitchen terrace; languished on sunbeds in the upper garden after swimming in the irresistible salt-water pool; enjoyed smart dinners in the simple and intimate dining room, and a glass of red wine beside the roaring fire in the end alcove of the simple but elegant sitting room. All of these spaces we filled with endless conversation, music and laughter, but you might be there at the right time of year to also benefit from the roof terraces off the upper bedrooms, the covered terrace from the sitting room, the TV room… And for those times when you need a little solitude for your book or your diary or (dare I say it?) your emails, there are similar welcoming places, not least a generous hammock, plentiful seating about the garden, and (if you’re really serious about those emails) a study area with desk.We balanced our week between luxuriating in the house and gardens and exploring the area both on foot (to St Paul de Vence, La Colombe d’Or, the Fondation Maeght) and by car (Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Nice, Villefranche sur Mer, and the eastern end of the Côte d’Azur). I’ve rarely been more reluctant to leave a holiday home. Enjoy!P.S. The photos do NOT do the place justice.

Located in beautiful, calm woodland, La Sonine is tastefully furnished and fully equipped with everything you could possibly need in the kitchen and garden. There are two fridge-freezers, two ovens, a microwave and an induction hob, along with enough crockery, cutlery, glassware and utensils for a large group. Whatever the season, you will be neither too hot nor too cold due to underfloor heating and air conditioning. There is a maxi-screen TV with satellite channels and a large selection of DVDs, and a good selection of toys, games and books for both indoors and outdoors. The outdoor heated pool is of a good size and the garden provides a beautiful setting for barbecues and meals on the terrace. The villa is 5 minutes from St Paul de Vence, 10 minutes from Vence and a large supermarket, within easy reach of other hilltop villages and 20 minutes from Nice. It couldnt be in a better location. Highly recommended.

In September 2016, my spouse, I and four friends/family, celebrated our 50th anniversary at La Sonine. The villa proved to be a perfect choice for this very special occasion. It is a private, spacious place that would comfortably accommodate 8 or, in a pinch, 10. The house, featuring a variety of state-of-the art amenities, including a large, well-equipped kitchen, takes maximum advantage of the greenery that surrounds it. Most memorably, double doors in the master bedroom gave us direct access to the lawn and large swimming pool.Perhaps the most important asset of the villa is its owner, Juliet, a resident of the UK. Though we never met, it was clear from the outset that she loves the villa (her family uses it at every opportunity) and wants those who pass through to enjoy it to the fullest. Her property managers are first class and readily available to respond patiently, in person and by phone, to any question. Prior to our visit, Juliet sent us a collection of essays on local attractions, restaurants, and how to take best advantage of the homes features. We recommend La Sonine without qualification and hope to return in the near future.

Prior to our visit, Juliet sent us a collection of "essays" on local attractions, restaurants, and how to take best advantage of the home's features.
We recommend La Sonine without qualification and hope to return in the near future.

Old time character with modern conveniences
This beautiful villa with all the modern conveniences is the perfect place for a holiday!!We spent many hours either before or after our daily jaunt relaxing outside in the lovely garden or inside by the fire.
It is just minutes away from St. Paul de Vence with its many art galleries and fine restaurants.
In addition, it lends itself to the many other medieval villages and beautiful towns along the Cote d' Azur.
It is the perfect place for a special holiday!!

Absolutely Lovely
This is an absolutely gorgeous place. At first appearance it appears charmingly rustic but it comes with all "mod cons". We found no shortcomings in terms of kitchen, bathrooms, laundry etc. In particular, the kitchen is large with tons of fridge space. The bedrooms on the upper floor are high-ceilinged and airy which meant that we were comfortable even in the July heat.
The swimming pool got a lot of use. It is salt water which means no chlorine irritation. There is plenty of lawn space for relaxing and games.
There is a stone patio just off the kitchen which is shaded for much of the day by a large old tree which means that dining outside is comfortable and convenient.
In short, the house and grounds met and exceeded all expectations.
The location is very convenient. It is only 20-25 minutes outside of Nice by car but feels very removed from any urban setting. Before we went we were told that St. Paul-de-Vence was a must-visit and we were pleasantly surprised to find that this charming old town is, in fact, a short (20 minute?) walk from the house. Dinner in St. Paul-de-Vence is a great option as is a simple game of boules (with a beverage from the local bistro) in the square outside the town walls. Remember to bring a flashlight when you walk home.
This is a real gem and is a place that I would recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a stay in the south of France that mixes local charm with the conveniences of home (if your home is in North America or the UK).

La Sonine is a gorgeous villa inside and out.
The villa was a perfect choice! The grounds and pool were so well kept, and the inside was decorated beautifully. The kitchen and the four bathrooms were all up to date with modern appliances and fixtures. The owner was so informative about the locale, and the manager of the home was always available. The location was perfect in order to visit many nearby sites or even for a beautiful walk to the nearby village of St. Paul de Vence. We hope to some day return and stay at La Sonine.

A perfect house in idyllic surroundings.
The house within a magical setting was truly spectacular. The location was perfect the pool large and the interior was modernized to a high standard whilst being simple, elegant as well as homely.
The owners clearly know the area passionately and provide a 'bible' that proved accurate and very helpful.
Our stay could not have been better and we intend to return with our family again.

Amazing and gorgeous. The perfect getaway.
My wife and I chose La Sonine as vacation home and as a location for our wedding ceremony. Several of our friends stayed with us at the villa also, along with our 1-year-old son. It was absolutely perfect in all respects. On top of the spacious comfortable rooms, every single picture taken there was beautiful. Everything about it down to the fine details was exquisite.

beautiful accommodation and perfect position
Our family of two adults, two 13 year olds and an 8 year old stayed at La Sonine at a time of year where the weather wasn't particularly consistent but the villa was so well equipped and homely that we still enjoyed every minute of our stay. Everything in this sprawling villa is absolutely pristine. Having just benefitted from a refurb' we couldn't find fault with any aspect of the accommodation. The quality of the rooms, bathrooms and relaxation areas is first class and we didn't want to leave. The kids were thrilled with the 'fooseball table' in the basement and spent hours happily playing on it plus the new enourmous plasma TV (english channels available)proved a hit with them when the weather outside wasn't so great. Most of all we enjoyed sitting around the log fire in the evening together and just relaxing. We did use the garden once or twice when the sun came out and it is just a wonderful space that's surrounded by a forested area and so feels really peaceful and calm.
The position of La Sonine is second to none. There's just no where like the village St Paul de Vence which is just up the road from the villa. Wandering the ancient cobbled alleyways browsing through the art galleries and gift shops and then catching a glimpse of the stunning coastline from its position high on the hillside is just one of life's greatest pleasures.
I can only imagine how idyllic La Sonine is in more clement weather, with the french doors open and the kids swimming in the pool. Breakfast outside in the sun and an infinite choice of beautiful French villages all within a short distance.
I spent a long time searching for the right place to rent in this area and La Sonine was without doubt an exceptional find. Highly recommended.

La Sonine
Having made an enquiry through the website, I was contacted promptly by the owner. She provided comprehensive details about the property and excellent information about the area. Upon arrival, we found everything to be as described. Despite this not being part of the normal rental agreement, the owner and manager were happy to arrange additional ironing/cleaning/babysitting as we required. The lady provided was reasonably priced and did an excellent and efficient job. We were spoilt for choice of bedrooms on arrival as there were only four in our party. This enabled our two boys each to have a beautiful double bedroom with terrace or balcony while we took the room that led directly to the pool. Normally we also travel with grandparents, and the house could easily have accommodated them as well comfortably. The house has plentiful seating, both inside and out and adequate dining facilities. It has an interesting mix of Far Eastern and Provencal art, creating an individual and homely environment very far removed from buy-to-let properties. The grounds were impeccably maintained and the pool quite the cleanest and trouble free we have ever enjoyed. It enjoys a perfect position, being 25 mins walking distance to St Paul de Vence yet in a very peaceful position at the edge of woods. I understand that the kitchen is about to be completely renovated so the house should be in superb condition for future rentals. I would certainly recommend this property.

La Sonine - A Dream in the South of France
We had search several web sites looking for a villa in the south of France. When we found La Sonine we searched the web site and it was most helpful in reviewing the property and its amenities. We had a wonderful time and the villa was truly our home base as we explored the French Riviera. Locate in what became our favorite city, St. Paul, it is close to everything and has the peace and quite you so much appreciate when return for the evening. The property manager was most helpful and very willing to assist you with your questions on the local sites and the surrounding area. From the initial inquiry and through the booking process the villa owners were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The informational guides sent to us was very helpful in our travels through out France. The villa has an information booklet that was a real bonus in planning our sightseeing and tours of the Riviera.
We enjoyed evenings at the property and soon decided to have dinner there instead of the areas several restaurants. The property manager found us a superb cook and it was pure pleasure to enjoy a terrific French meal in the comfort of the villa. There were eight in our party and all thought we had found the perfect villa - a great place and we look forward to returning.

Great experience and hope to return someday
My extended family had a reunion at La Sonine for a week in July 2010. What an amazing place, location and experience! We had 4 sets of couples - 8 adults total. We even hired a local private chef for two evenings and that was a superb alternative to eating out a few times. La Sonine was the perfect spot to explore St Paul and Vence, although we found it difficult to leave the house. All around a great experience, fantastic location, rooms, grounds, pool, patio, etc. Would be quite pleased to return here again!

Perfect Fit
My family of 6 spent 10 fabulous days at La Sonnine. The villa served as a home base from which we explored the area around Nice. With four active children under 12, we needed a villa with plenty of options for entertaining and relaxing. The pool was a great resource - we swam daily - and the garden was great for a game of catch. Kids could be reading in one room while others were playing a game of Scrabble. The interior of the house was laid out in such a way that early risers didn't disrupt those still sleeping. Everything was clean and well-maintained and the property manager couldn't have been more helpful. When we go back to France it will be to La Sonnine!

Truly a stunning villa!
La Sonine was a wonderful place for 2 families to vacation together (4 adults and 4 children). The kids wanted to spend all their time in the beautiful pool and the adults enjoyed all our meals and evenings out on the terrace. Juliet was immensely helpful as we planned our trip and was incredibly responsive. I never waited more than 24 hours for a return email. St. Paul de Vence was a beautiful town that you could walk to but it would have been a long walk back up the hill, so we drove. We did some adventuring to neighboring towns but spent most of our time at the villa. There was ample information at the house to allow for more exploring. We definitely recommend this property!

A treasure in beauitiful surroundings!
An absolutely amazing place very suitable for 6 adults and two kids, with a location that could not be better. Walking distance to the small village, perfect area for early and intense morning runs, near distance to Nice, airport etc. The house is very comfortable and has all facilities that you really need - great pool, big out door terraces, huge beautiful garden. The house really feels like a home, very "user friendly" thanks to that manuals, information etc has been provided by the owners in a super efficient way already prior to arrival. The interior is a nice mix of French and Asian style - perfect for the world traveler. We will definitely come back again if circumstances allow us to!
