James is an excellent host. My husband and I recommend this stay. Very clean. Full size kitchen is like home++. The upstairs 2-bedroom apartment is comfortable and quiet. Thick towels. Beds and pillows excellent. Water pressure in shower and washer/dryer downstairs in the garage -- both great. James will offer quarters for the washer/dryer if you forget to bring. The location is not far from Acadia National Park and the Quietside of Mount Desert. A terrific home base from which to explore Acadia National Park and the Quietside of Mount Desert. Also not far from the Schoodic area, the Charlotte Rhoades Butterfly Garden, Somesville, Blue Hill (check out the Blue Hill Co-op), Deer Island, Bass Harbor, Stoneville, and more. We bought fresh fish in season from the local grocery store on James' specific recommendation and saved. Taking advantage of the gas grill provided. Ellsworth has much to offer, too -- Union River Lobster Pot restaurant (where we saw a Bald Eagle), Lamoine Beach, Woodlawn historic site. Bottomline is, why stay in an overpriced hotel when you can have the convenience of home?

We loved the location of this place. Close to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, within 1/2 hour. We also went to Orono and Bangor and that was within an hour drive. James, the host, was very attentive to every detail to make our stay enjoyable and he has great recommendations too!

There are not enough stars to be able to give this VRBO a proper rating - it was one of, if not the best, vacation rental experience we've ever had!
1. James is a spectacular host! Every communication received a quick response, and any concern or question was addressed right away. He was so warm and friendly. He greeted us upon our arrival, helped us bring our bags in, and showed us around. He checked on us during our stay to make sure all was good. He even gave us a homemade wild blueberry pie, farm fresh eggs, and fresh wild blueberries! We really enjoyed chatting with and getting to know him a bit during our stay. By the time we left, we felt like family!
2. The apartment is spotlessly clean and is very nicely decorated - it really gave us the feeling of being on vacation in Maine. The bedrooms were a good size, and the beds and pillows were super comfortable. It was perfect for my husband and myself as well as our two teens. The bathroom was similarly well equipped, with plenty of towels and toiletries.
3. The eat-in kitchen is fantastic too! Besides the pie and eggs, James had stocked the fridge, freezer, and cabinets with other staples and condiments. There is an entire complement of spices, pots, pans, wraps, oils, etc. - we really felt right at home, and it made our stay even more enjoyable and comfortable.
4. The location is convenient for trips to Acadia and elsewhere in the area, and there are supermarkets and good restaurants nearby.
Our highest recommendation!

This was the best place we could have picked for our stay. Not only are you close enough to Acadia and Bar Harbor, but you are far enough you don’t have to deal with the chaos during peak season. James is the best host there is. He had great recommendations and was very attentive. We really appreciated the extra goodies! The apartment has everything you will need, parking, it’s clean, and the property is very well maintained. We will definitely return the next time we head to Maine!

From the moment we booked the Hidden Gem until we departed, James was communicative, hospitable and generous with his time, recommendations and unexpected gifts which made our stay memorable. This location is perfect for getting to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Would definitely return.

Just stayed four nights at this property and we were all very satisfied. The location is great. Close to stores and restaurants in Ellsworth (try Zeppa’s pizza - so good), and easy to get Acadia and surrounding area. The rental is a well appointed apartment above a garage. Must be able to do stairs. The property is basic upon arrival and first impression but well maintained. Inside of apartment was very nice with a large kitchen that was well stocked (we really appreciated that there were spices, condiments, sugar, coffee, etc.). There was even a case of bottled water waiting for us in the fridge. Living room was cozy. Bedrooms were adequate with very comfortable beds. Towels and linens were nice quality. We enjoyed sitting on the deck in the morning sunshine, drinking our coffee. We used the gas grill one evening to cook dinner and it was great. We were able to do a load of laundry while they’re which was super helpful. One of the best parts was the friendliness and helpfulness of James the host. He was there when we arrived to ensure we got in OK and had everything we needed. He was very accessible and helpful throughout our stay offering recommendations of places to go and helpful in solving any minor issue we had such as the grill gas tank running low or needing quarters for the laundry. We would definitely stay there again and recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area.

What a wonderful find. 15 minutes to Acadia; 25 minutes to Bar Harbor. This 2 BR unit had everything we needed. James is a wonderful host. Easy to communicate with, helpful ( He even carried my heavy suitcase up the stairs to the unit). Beds were very comfortable.Area was quiet. We enjoyed looking a birds & wild turkeys out our window. Be aware the unit is up a flight of stairs which is clearly stated & shown in the pictures. I would stay here again next time I come to Maine.

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment style unit. All the rooms were a nice and comfortable size and it was well stocked with almost everything one would need. We ended up having to deal with a bit of bad weather from Tropical Depression Philippe, but James made sure we had extra water (thankfully, we didn’t need it) and offered for us to park our car in the garage. What a great host! Also, the location is a short drive from Bar Harbor and Acadia and we enjoyed a few local restaurants like Finn’s Irish Pub, Airline Brewing Company and Pat’s Pizza. Would definitely stay in this great unit again. Thank you James for providing such a nice place to stay for our first visit to Maine!

Smelled very fresh and clean, nicely decorated and stocked with everything you would need from dishes to cookware, toiletries and medicinal items for headache, minor cuts and indigestion. We really enjoyed our stay. It is a great location for visiting either Schoodic or Mt Desert Island locations of Acadia National Park. Very comfortable place with all the comforts of home. The homemade oatmeal raisin cookies were a nice touch and came in handy on the long hikes in the park.

It was the perfect location for us, It was a direct route to Acadia and lots of choices of restaurants, groceries stores, and conveniences within a short distance. James was great in allowing us to park in the garage during Hurricane Lee so we could load our car and not get rained on and refunded us a night's stay due to the hurricane. Will definitely recommend this place to everyone.

Property is located conveniently between lots of attractions. The manager/owner James, is wonderful! There when you need him, absent otherwise.
We pray that Hurricane Lee keeps far from you!!!!

We wanted something close to Bar Harbor but not in the Harbor. The VRBO was close to everything and the host provided anything we would need. We wanted for nothing!

This was our first time to Acadia and we enjoyed every minute of it. From our wonderful stay in this apartment to the amazing host who thought of everything we would need; this truly felt like home away from home. The blueberry pie waiting for us when we arrived was a welcome treat and absolutely delicious. James also provided some great recommendations for food and activities that were perfect for our family. Thank you, James, for being a wonderful host!

We thought this property was a great place for our family of four. The king bed and separate room with two single beds was exactly what we were looking for. Having never been to this area of Maine, I was a bit uncertain with the location, but we found it to be just fine. It was about a 25 minute drive to Bar Harbor / ANP and we felt it was worth it for the lodging savings.
The place had a lot of extras in the kitchen which was much appreciated. The laundry is in the garage below the unit and takes quarters. James was kind enough to supply some quarters for us to use.
Communicating with James was very good. He was extremely responsive and replied to our questions probably quicker than any other host.
All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone looking for a great place to stay near Acadia National Park.

James was the most welcoming and accommodating host. The property was spotless and ready to accommodate guests after strenuous days on the hiking trail. Highly recommend! James went out of his way to help us in many ways - jumping our dead car battery and suggestions for trails and exploration!!

We had a great stay at the Hidden Gem. The apartment was very clean, spacious and great for families. James, was a wonderful host and easy to get in touch with. We were greeted with freshly baked cookies which were delicious. The apartment is on a quiet street but near to grocery store and a Wal-Mart and about 25 minutes from downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia Park. We would definitely recommend the Hidden Gem to friends and family!

The apartment is about a short drive away to Acadia National Park. The apartment is clean and well-maintained. The kitchen has pots and pans so that you can make your own Maine lobsters. I bought live lobster from grocery stores and gas stations (they sell live lobster everywhere) to avoid overpaying at restaurants :).

One of the nicest VRBOs we have stayed at. We liked not being in Bar Harbor but within a short drive of Acadia. James is awesome. The blueberry pie and cheesecake were delicious and much appreciated. We would definitely stay here again.

Sweet, super clean and lovely apartment for up to four. Modern space over a 2-car garage, with fully equipped kichen with new appliances and granite countertops. Quiet, somewhat rural neighborhood.James is delight, and provides many necessities not found in other short-term rentals. We would definitely stay here again if we return to the area! Thank you!

James's property is extremely comfortable and quiet. We appreciated being away from the Bar Harbor crowds. The kitchen and bathroom are well stocked. He has it tasteful decorated in a nautical theme. He is a very pleasant man, who is extremely easy to communicate with and offers suggestions of local restaurants and sights. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Ellsworth and the easy access to Acadia National Park. Highly recommend!!

This was the most comfortable and beautiful “home away” for our exploration of Acadia National Park! James was an awesome host, greeting us on arrival to show us the apartment and make sure we had everything we needed. He thought of EVERYTHING, including chilled bottles of water and granola bars for our hikes. Everything we could have possibly needed was at our fingertips, including James who was just a text away for any questions. Definitely a 5-star!!! We’d give 10 if we could!

This was the perfect location for everything we wanted to do in the area. It’s a very easy drive to Mount Desert Island. James is a great host and have is some helpful hints and ideas for places to visit that we hadn’t thought of. AND he left is the most tasty homemade wild blueberry pie.

Beautiful place nearly flawless, all decorated wonderfully and has everything you need. Quite spacious and loved the king bed and the two full beds, fully equipped kitchen and open space living room. James is very friendly and communicative. The place is only 20-30 min drive from Acadia, and has many stores nearby. The heater was useful as the weather got chilly.

Can't speak highly enough of the host and property. Was centrally located allowing us to explore and just far enough from Acadia crowds. Host was great in communicating with us and offered some great suggestions.
5.0 / 10.0
The location was perfect with ease of getting to bar harbor and Acadia national park. It was only 20 minutes or so to both but far away enough fir peace and quiet. The property was perfect. All the comforts of home. A fully equipped and stocked kitchen. The added bonus of air conditioning which was refreshing after a day out on the trails and mountains! There was a propane run fire pit which was great to sit by at the end of day. We had access to a garage which was great to store our bikes. Lamoine beach was close by to grab a few sunsets and collect shells. All of this was amazing but by far superior to that was our host James. He was communicative and kind. He left us a home made blueberry pie, sourdough bread, garden veggies and herbs. We had one day of rain and James texted ideas of how to spend our day. Which we took and it was so fun. He truly cares about his guests and it shows. He is a SUPER host!
