About this cottage rental
Lobster buoys dot the ocean and seals pop their heads out of the water. Some of the darkest night skies on the east coast offer incredible stargazing. Schoodic Surf Cottage is located in a private wooded setting on the pink-granite shore in the heart of Downeast Maine.
Relax on the shorefront and watch the waves crashing on the rocks, the seagulls flying, and the lobster men (and women) pulling their traps. Explore real Maine lobstering villages. Buy lobster off the dock and steam them in sea water in our outdoor cooker.
Just five miles from the village of Winter Harbor and the Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park. Drive around the park loop along the rocky shore, while enjoying views of the open ocean and the nearby islands. Take the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor; enjoy the quaint village of Winter Harbor, art galleries, restaurants and even a golf course. There is also a grocery store, 5 & 10 general store, and gas station.
Enjoy the real Maine coast!

We had another amazing summer vacation at Schoodic Surf Cottage! This place is a gem! This year we saw the eagle that landed in a tree on the front lawn for about 30 minutes, harbor seals playing in front of the property, and dear wandering through the lawn several mornings. It was a relaxing week, already looking forward to next year!

Well maintained, beautiful view and property! We couldn’t have had a better experience! The place had all the comforts of home and was very clean.

This property was perfect for our fall escape. You can see amazing sunrises, breathtaking ocean views and unbelievable star filled skies on the property. We enjoyed being away from the more populated areas of Maine but close enough to explore Schoodic peninsula, Bar Harbor and Jasper Beach. This house has everything you could ask for if you want to prepare your own meals. I highly recommend purchasing fresh lobsters off the boat in Corea. Everything you need to steam/boil the lobsters is provided, including instructions. Best lobsters I ever had! We also had some great food and drinks at the Pickled Wrinkle and the Treehouse Grill, both a short ride away. I would definitely rent this house again when we come back to Maine.

Our second stay and I would give this property more stars if it were possible. Great house, amazing location, and even better owners. Thank you Syler family, your home and hospitality have provided my family and I with two great vacations and fond memories for a lifetime.

We had a glorious time. Wonderful location, amazing views full of wildlife, tranquility and access to great hiking. The house is clean, well maintained, stocked kitchen, fresh white towels/bedding and comfortable beds (no sagging mattresses).
We saw eagles, loons, snow rabbits, seals, porcupine, porpoise, deer, frogs, spiders (not the scary kind), butterflies and a spruce grouse. The mosses are a floral category unto their own and so vibrant.
We experience a white sun along with the numerous moonrises.
We will be back.

This was our first visit to Maine in general for myself, husband, sister and brother-in-law, all in our 60s. This was the perfect house to base our week visit to the Acadia area after having traveled up the coast from Boston. The beautiful rocky coast water view and the updated kitchen and baths were the selling points for us. We loved sitting on the back deck for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. Such a quiet peaceful area. I much preferred this to staying right on Mt Desert. We drove over to hike some trails a couple days and the 1 hr drive was expected. Luckily the crowds seemed better after Labor Day weekend. We ferried over from Winter Harbor to spend the day at Bar Harbor one day and it was a really pleasant 45 min ferry to view the coast from the sea. Spent 2 days enjoying the quieter less visited Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia. The house is very clean and has all needed supplies, including paper goods, plastic baggies etc. I appreciated all the wonderful artwork on the walls! Would come back again for sure.

Here's a moral dilemma. Schoodic Surf Cottage is one of the, if not the, best VRBO's we have rented. (And we'ce stayed in many.) However, its booking schedule is so full that we had to reserve it two years ago to get our two August weeks this year. We are torn about making it look even more attractive and encouraging further competition for dates.
However, the truth should be told. We have been vacationing in Maine occasionally for almost thirty years. We kept wanting to find a place with rocky shoreline and crashing surf and never succeeded before. We finally found it here. (The waves are not always crashing but that's a nit to pick.)
In addition to the gorgeous view from the deck and the living room, SSC comes with its own dependable wildlife: harbor porpoises, snowshoe hares, sea otters, hummingbirds, a young buck deer, and, the most amazing, a pair of bald eagles, one of which regularly perched at the top of the trees in plain sight of the deck. (We have watched it there for an hour or more at a time.)
The house itself has very comfortable beds and great views from the two upstairs bedrooms (we watched gorgeous sunrises and the super blue moon from our bed). The kitchen is the best equipped of any VRBO we have ever stayed in. There's even a coffee grinder! (The knives are sharp and cut things. If you don't understand the importance of that, you've not stayed in enough VRBO's.)
In short, this is a phenomenal place. Please do not book it! :-)

Schoodic Surf Cottage is wonderful! This is our second stay in this house, which we highly recommend. It was clean, inviting, and gave us our own slice of the rocky Maine coast. It feels like home but with the added enjoyment of being in Maine close to Acadia National Park and Schoodic Point as well as so many other wonderful things to do and places to visit. If you need a place to recharge your batteries in a relaxing environment, this is the perfect place to do it. The hosts are very responsive and provide informational tidbits to make your stay that much better. The addition of air conditioning made the house a heavenly respite after a day of activities. Kudos to the hosts and those who help to make Schoodic Surf Cottage so welcoming.

This was our 5th year staying at SSC. The slower side of Acadia National Park in the Schoodic Penninsula allows us to enjoy all things Maine at a relaxing and enjoyable pace. We especially love the ocean front location of the cottage and the great hosts. Looking forward to next year!

Everything about this home and property is perfect -- location, view, house and especially the thoughtful details from the owners, who clearly take great pride in both owning and hosting this magnificent little piece of Maine and want to make sure that you enjoy it as much as they do. The surrounding towns and nature opportunities are just what we wanted -- friendly, casual and off the beaten path. But also, don't feel bad if all you want to do is stay home, sit outside and enjoy the view. That's how we spent a lot of our week here, lulled by the sound of waves as we slept and enjoyed our days. We left refreshed and happy. A real find!

This is our third visit to Maine and our favorite house! The view is beautiful, the house decor and details are perfect. We love being close to Schoodic and driving over to the more crowded Bar Harbor when we desire. The kids loved fishing off of the rocks and even finding crabs and starfish after high tide. They equally loved the indoor and outdoor games provided. Just a perfect week thanks to the thoughtfulness of the owners. We will return!

From the moment you arrive at SSC you know you are in a special place. Hosts truly care about your stay and call upon your arrival to answer any questions. The property is wonderful, quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed exploring Schoodic, Acadia National Park and towns along the way. Take a puffin cruise on a lobster boat. Sit out and gaze at the stars at night. A perfect place. Thank you.

This home was perfect! It was very comfortable, clean and off the beaten path on the beautiful rocky coastline that is Maine. Right next door to the Schoodic Peninsula part of Acadia National Park, and not too long of a drive to Mount Desert Island.
There is an extremely well organized book the owners put together with TONS of information on where to go and what to do in the area. They checked in on us with a phone call shortly after we arrived and gave us even more helpful information about the area.
We experienced a power outage during a storm while there and they made sure that a generator was turned on while the power was out. We were well taken care of!
And, if the power does go out, or the weather isn't conducive to outdoor activities, there is a great variety of books on Maine, plenty of games to play and puzzles to do. Or, just sit and watch the waves hitting the rocks. Either way, it's relaxing and fun.
I would definitely come back to stay here.

We loved our stay at the Schoodic Surf Cottage! The location is stunning. The sounds and smells of the surf on the granite coast are healing. The amazing sunrise. The SSC has everything you could ever need and the hosts made the visit more like a stop at a friend's house than a run-of-the-mill house rental.

Our first time in Maine ever was a memorable one with this location. Easy to checkin, comfortable and the private beach was breathtaking. We wanted ocean front and this checked every box we had. Absolutely loved it. Waking up to the sound of the waves, no noise was wonderful. Hosts were very helpful and kind.

The Schoodic Surf Cottage is just delightful! We celebrated birthdays and retirements enjoying two weeks in this wonderful get-away. The location next to the rocks and ocean is what you might expect from a stay along the Maine coast. But the cottage (if you can call a three bedroom, two bath a cottage) was so much more. It felt like home as soon as you walked through the door. The kitchen is fully stocked with spices, utensils, pots & pans, cooking appliances, and a tea kettle that got plenty of use. There were lots of pillows and comfy items such as throw blankets on the chilly mornings watching the sunrise. The art and decor throughout the house was wonderful. You can tell the love and care that is taken inside the cottage. The outside gardens and seating areas (there are 4 different ones) is equally well maintained and offers spectacular views. And the use of the garage was an added bonus. Kent and Lynell were very gracious hosts, checking in to see if all was well and offering suggestions and recommendations. The Schoodic Surf Cottage was simply a joy!

I’ve stayed here for a number of years now, and every time is better than the last. Lynell & Kent are lovely and the home is beautiful. There is nothing so peaceful as listening to the water lapping on the rocks - it is truly restorative. Can’t wait to return next year!

The house is beautifully situated for enjoying the surf with a gorgeous view of the water, occasional lobster boats, and a visiting eagle all within easy access to the villages of Winter Harbor and Corea plus Schoodic Point. The hosts go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and comfortable in their idyllic getaway.

Kent and Lynell have a beautiful home! One of my favorite things is the large bedroom windows which allows the sunrise to greet me every morning! I find it invigorating!
Maine is such a beautiful place to visit. Depending where you stay, it can be touristy. Acadia is a short drive to visit.
Kent and Lynell’s house gives us the seclusion and privacy we are looking for. A true relaxing vacation!
The Schoodic Peninsula is right up the road from the house. We love it! It has all of the views, the rock formations to climb on without all of the people!
It is tranquil and breathtaking!!
The pictures hardly do it justice!
We are looking forward to our return to your house in 2024!!

Wonderful two weeks!
We had the best two week vacation in Schoodic! Thank you to Kent and Lynell. Kent and Lynell have a beautiful piece of property and beautifully updated and modern home. Kent and Lynell think o f everything and keep it stocked in the house. - very nice touch. Air conditioning was newly installed and we used i on a couple of hot days. Most days the sea breeze was more than enough. We loved the quiet of the prospect harbor area and ventured to MDI a few times. We loved visiting close by Corea and winter harbor. Thank you Kent and Lynell for sharing your home with us!

A lovely, quiet cottage close to Schoodic
This was a lovely cottage with a great view and quiet setting. The bedrooms were all of ample size. A lot of work was clearly recently put into the beautiful bathrooms and kitchen. The kitchen had all of the necessities for a large family: plenty of pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc. The owners were extremely helpful and responsive. They called us upon arrival and gave us some nice local knowledge about where to explore, restaurants to try, hidden places in the Prospect Harbor to find, etc. If you enjoy watching the fisherman haul traps within 50ft of the shoreline, viewing the shorebirds dive in the cove, exploring pools along the rocks, and listening to the eagles cackling...this is the cottage to stay in.

Simply Perfect
Everything about our stay was perfect - the place is set up for guests' comfort. Adirondack chairs are placed outside for perfect views. Inside the rooms are arranged to take advantage of outside views. Kitchen is well appointed, too. Owners are wonderful and responsive. Highly recommend.

PERFECTION
Schoodic Surf Cottage is exactly as advertised and then some. The cottage is clean, in great condition, well-equipped, well-laid out, comfortable, cozy, and with beautiful views from many vantage points both indoors and out. There were five adults in our group, three working virtually, and there was always space for work and recreation to proceed simultaneously, as well as plenty of WiFi power for all. From playing games and reading, cooking inside or grilling outside, walking on the rocks, enjoying the view from the deck, or walking the dogs in the neighborhood or to town, we always felt comfortable and at home. SSC's location is also terrific for venturing to Schoodic to hike, watch the ocean on calm days or during gales, and to cross-country ski (all of which we did). It is also an easy hop to Mt, Desert Island and points in between or points further north (which we also did). In addition, Kent and Lynell could not have been more welcoming, informative, and gracious. We felt as if we have made new friends and look forward to our paths crossing again in the future. We would definitely return to Schoodic Surf Cottage and recommend it with the highest scores and without hesitation.

Beautiful Ocean Front Home - with Granite Stone Boulders
Extremely beautiful home that is a fantastic mix of beach & rustic finishes complemented by an exterior that is very New England nautical. We enjoyed the house and ocean views it offered. The host / owner is fantastic and they have a thick binder book of places to go and helpful info that certainly will be appreciated by those who stay there. They even provided a gift bag that had 2 kitchen towels which was also a nice touch. There is no sand or sand & pebble beach that was our only disappointment. Be aware that those granite boulders are very unstable when walked on and very slippery when wet. There are stairs that go down to them and once your down there you can get even better views of the neighboring property and shoreline along wirh the cove that your on. Just be careful when you walk around if you chose to. Two of the 3 bedrooms are upstairs (both have a water view where you can hear the ocean) and downstairs is one bedroom that has no water view (it looks out at the front yard and driveway to garage, still a nice view with the pine / balsam trees). Gravel road to the cottage is short, well maintained, and no degree of steepness (no issues whatsoever for any vehicle type). The cottage is updated and modern with no issues. The stairs are very steep, so something to be cognizant of for any disabled folks or elderly, although our son with cerebral palsy who walks on tippy toes managed it with no issues.
There is several restaurants nearby and a convenient store and and grocerie store that all within 8-15 minutes away. The restaurant Salt box was definitely the closest to fine(ish) dining vs the others however was kinda weird as they didn't provide any to-go boxes or a to-go menu. We went during a time when many of the places were closed for the season so something to be aware of too in case you go during a similar time your travel time could be a lot longer to find a nice place to eat at. There is also a co-op nearby (about 7-10 min away) that you can buy lobsters, crab,, and other seafood,, right off the boat called Corea. (Lobster was $12/lb). We also got Amazon delivered there wirh no issues or delays. All together great place and gave us a better idea of the area.

Idyllic Week For Small Family
Visited with my wife and two young children (8 and 5 yrs old). Great owners, very communicative; clean home and beautiful location; away from tourist hotspots but only a 30 min ferry ride or hour's drive to Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, and other Mount Desert Island attractions. Enjoy!

Another Great Vacation By the Sea
This is our 3rd summer at Schoodic Surf Cottage. We love this lovely cottage and feel so fortunate to be able to spend time right on the ocean. It is obvious that the owners, Kent and Lynell, take great pride doing all they can to make sure their guests have the best stay possible. We are looking forward to returning next year!

Ideal Maine Retreat
From the quaint but spacious home, to the shoreline views and wildlife, this property was the heart of all our Acadia adventures. Our family of 5 made the most magical memories here, and I left a piece of my heart in the beauty of the surrounding National Parks. I can not wait to return.

Wonderful, beautiful home!
The location of this property is truly spectacular, and it was perfectly relaxing to sit on the deck or out on the rocks at water’s edge. It is beautifully decorated and had everything we could have needed for our stay. Our hosts were very welcoming and very helpful. It’s proximity to the Schoodic portion of Acadia was ideal. It is also quite close to Bar Harbor. We enjoyed hiking several trails at both. The view from the Schoodic Head Overlook was our favorite! We enjoyed viewing all the lighthouses in the area, especially walking to Prospect Harbor Light only a few doors down. We enjoyed our daily trips to Grindstone Neck where we were able to catch glimpses of Winter Harbor and Egg Rock lights, saw many seals sunning on the rocks, and distantly viewed young osprey in their nest. The Pickled Wrinkle was a great place to grab a bite (delicious food), and the Corea co-op was a great place to pick up fresh lobster. We saw many deer nightly near the lighthouse, were visited daily by a snowshoe hair, and a few evenings had to yield to a very good sized porcupine..we appreciated all the wildlife. We had so many wonderful daily adventures , and the most scenic, relaxing home to return to. We would love to stay here again!!

The cottage is great, just what we needed to unwind from our go go go lifestyle. Kids spent countless hours exploring the rocks out front, and the tidal pools by the beach at the end of the lane. Wonderful communication from owners.

Beautiful and Relaxing Environment for Work or Play
My spouse and I needed a work from home change of scenery and this was the perfect escape. This home is charming, comfortable and clean, with an incredible view of the ocean. Even in March we had a couple of warm days to enjoy the grounds. The frosting on the cake - we could bring our 2 dogs who also enjoyed the stay! The location is perfect - a short drive to the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia and less than an hour to Acadia Park on Mount Desert Island. The owners were wonderful - helpful, kind, responsive and welcoming. We can't wait to return!
