About this cottage rental
Location, location, location! The 'Verdie May House' is an adorable 1930's cottage located in the heart of Lewisburg's Historical District - only a short 5 minute stroll to restaurants, cafes and shopping. Enjoy exploring the historical sites or relaxing on the spacious porch with a cool drink. This newly renovated home is the perfect place to enjoy Lewisburg!
This cosy 1930's cottage offers the opportunity to step back in time and immerse yourself in Lewisburg's roaring 30's (but with modern comforts!). This freshly renovated cottage has an amazing history - it was home to several local identities (including Eileen Kramer, an Australian National Treasure dancer and acclaimed local furniture maker Ozzi May and his wife, Verdie). The cottage is our favorite place for hanging out with family and friends - particularly as we can walk everywhere (and leave the car at home)!. We love using the cottage as a base for exploring Lewisburg and know you will too! It's the perfect 'home away from home'!
The house is small (great for 1-4 people) and has a spacious, well equipped kitchen (with new appliances), comfortable living area, study area with large desk, two comfortable bedrooms (with luxury linens) , separate laundry, a cute upstairs bathroom (with a clawfoot bathtub) and wonderful new large downstairs bathroom (featuring plush towels). .
Original artwork and crafts by local artists, (including my Dad, Ronald Refsland), is found throughout the house.
The large covered porch is perfect for relaxing anytime of the day (even when it rains), people watching or for outdoor dining. You will enjoy views of Old Stone Church and the cemetery (directly across the street), Carnegie Hall and other historical sites. We have beautiful and comfortable outdoor furniture, including an antique iron outdoor dining table.
The large patio (using original stone and local river rocks custom designed by a local artisan) behind the house is a more private space - with the original outdoor fireplace available for BBQ's or making s'mores.
The large front yard is perfect for playing a friendly (or competitive!) game of Molkky or croquet (we have the games for you),
The queen bed and two twin beds have brand new quality mattresses with quality linens and duvets and fluffy pillows. The towels are 100% cotton. We are particular about dust and cleanliness as our daughter has allergies.
The city water is perfect drinking water.
If you would like some tasty food waiting in the cottage for you on arrival or during your stay, my sister in law, Beth, has a bakery business (Fresh Flours – at the local Farmers Market). For my guests, she will take phone/email orders and deliver directly to the cottage. She does amazing quiche, granola and pies (about 20 different kinds – all fantastic!). If you are interested, drop her an email at [email protected] (she lives about 2 minutes away from the cottage) and she can email the menu. I know what it is like travelling and sometimes it is nice to have an easy (and delicious) local options waiting when you arrive (or during your visit).
The Verdie May Cottage is the perfect 'home away from home' to enjoy your stay in Lewisburg! Come and enjoy!
This property is non-smoking and isn't suitable for anyone with mobility challenges.

We enjoyed another great stay at the Verdie May house. The cottage has become an anticipated annual home away from home for us as we stay here each summer on an annual trip to Lewisburg. The house is perfect for us. The porch cannot be beat! We enjoy walking all over downtown, taking strolls through the neighborhood, going to the fair and so forth. Elinor is wonderful and we cannot wait to come back next year.

This is an old house. I'd estimate the original construction in the 1930's or 40's but it has been completely redone (probably gutted). All applicances are brand new. There is an addition for a full bathroom with a very nice shower. Keeping the original wood floors in the kitchen and second floor was a nice touch. The house is small but comfy. The 2nd floor bathroom (with claw foot tub) is quite small with only a 5'6" door so watch your head! We were 4 adults and had no problem. A family with active children may find it too small. The wrap around deck is HUGE.
I found the dishes from the 40s and 50s in a display case very interesting. There are a number of such period pieces throughout the house.
The house is located 2 blocks from downtown Lewisburg and we walked there for breakfasts and dinners. (Skip the Humble Tomato; not as good as its rating.) It is a short drive from Greenbriar. The parking spot in front of the house is big enough for 2 cars with a spot for a third car in a lot next door. The street in front was a little busy during the day but quiet at night. For those with electric vehicles there is a FREE charging station on Senaca Trail / Jefferson Street just Northeast of The Barracks on Randolph street.
Only negative is the desk drawers are stuffed to overflowing with applicance and equipment manuals. They need to be organized and put elsewhere.

This location was ideal for walking downtown, driving to the caverns and the renaissance fair and just spending time together. Couldn’t have chosen any better. Thank you!

My best friend from childhood and I met in Lewisburg with our elderly mothers for a reunion. The cottage was perfect for us. We found it well appointed with all of the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay and I love that the updates did not take away from the historic charm. I would love to stay again in my next visit.

When we first entered this cottage, we felt like we just walked into an adorable doll house. Everything was so perfectly decorated, maximizing space and giving off very relaxed vibes! It was close to all the shops and restaurants in town and has a great outdoor space to enjoy any time of the day! The bedding and towels were a very nice touch. We had a little problem with the coffee maker, but within 2 hours, a new one was delivered-very responsive hosts-and crisis averted. I would definitely recommend this cottage and Lewisburg for a great getaway.

Easy walking distance to the downtown, a number of restaurants close by and everything was reasonably priced. The host at the Smooth Ambler Distillery was very helpful and informative plus the bourbon was good.

My daughter and I rented the cottage for a few days during her Spring Break. We stay so busy during the school year that we sometimes long for relaxation and simple things. The Verdie May Cottage was the perfect place for this retreat and we were able to relax, shop, dine, and relax some more. The location is perfect, walking distance to shops and dining but somehow you still feel like you are away from it all. We look forward to staying here again in the future.

The house was so clean! We enjoyed our stay and getting a quiche delivered from her relative's bakery waiting for us was a great touch! The beds were comfortable. Everything we could need was there.

Just what we were look for to celebrate our 38th anniversary. We rode bikes on the Greenbrier River Valley Trail and enjoyed the shops and restaurants in town which were so convenient to walk to. House was clean, comfortable, and easy to get used to with the great porch.

Came into town for a friend's wedding. We could walk everywhere which was the best. The porch is wonderful and tons of space. Communication was A+ and the emails had all the information needed. Would stay here again!

The cottage was perfect for our stay to visit the State Fair. The size was just right and the porch was fun! Easy to find and easy to communicate with the owner. The only thing we didn’t like was that the upstairs bathroom door had slits in it like window shutters. We were only comfortable using that bathroom if everyone was downstairs. Lol we ended up propping a towel up over it for privacy. Everything else was gorgeous! The beds are comfortable and we would have happily stayed longer. Thanks!

We enjoyed another great stay at the Verdie May house. We simply love this home, the neighborhood and the Lewisburg area. The house truly feels like home and is a nice mixture of older home charm and modern amenities. It has everything we need for a visit to the area. The porch is AMAZING and we spend a lot of time enjoying it. The house is in easy walking distance to all the great restaurants and shops in Lewisburg and sits just on the edge of downtown in a quiet, easily walkable neighborhood. We have already booked our next visit. Can't wait!

My husband and son stayed here while attending the LIV golf tournament another town over. They enjoyed their stay as it was conveniently located near everything this town had to offer. The house was small and quaint but offered everything they needed for their stay. The porch was a nice place to relax and the lights added to the ambiance of the house. The owner gave some great recommendations of restaurants and places to visit in town. The house was just as described online and we would definitely recommend it to others.

Maybe it’s because yellow is my favorite color, but really it’s because this quaint cabin had everything we needed for our stay to visit our daughter in Lewisburg. Close to downtown, a useful kitchen to make a family meal, a roomy and comfortable outdoor area to make many fond memories in…thank you for sharing your property with us.

Our stay in Lewisburg, West Virginia, was very enjoyable. The bungalow had everything we needed, and was very comfortable. Its location within blocks of downtown Lewisburg was ideal for walking to all the best restaurants, downtown shopping, and the North House Museum, which is like a true treasure for Greenbrier County. The large porch was a delightful spot to spend some time relaxing.

We went to Lewisburg for the annual chocolate festival. After a couple of hours walking the streets (and eating chocolate) it was nice to have a warm bath and soft bed to collapse into. The rental is about 2 blocks to the main streets of the quaint little town.

Absolute pleasure. Elinor is the consummate host. We needed to reschedule due to a medical issue and she was so accommodating. Attention to every detail. Property was immaculate. Great location in very nice neighborhood close to downtown. Highly recommend.

Perfect little cottage for a fall visit to WV. Everything was clean and we really enjoyed the outdoor space of the porch and fire pit out back.

The house is very convenient to walk to restaurants and stores in downtown Lewisburg. The bedrooms were small, but the bed was comfortable and the house had everything we needed.

We like everything about this house, cute, convenience, and cozy. For just a weekend stop, we did quite a bit of sight-seeing and adventure here. The house is within walking distance to museums, shops and restaurants. The town is quite charming. It's a good mix of rural and urban, in my opinion. There are also a lot of outdoor activities around the area, hiking, kayaking, biking, and swimming in the river was lots of fun. The latter part of our trip was pretty much raining, but we enjoy spending time on the porch, sipping tea, enjoy the view, listened to rain drop and bird chirping (very peaceful). We felt like we need to spend more time exploring the area so we will definitely put this location on our returning list. Thank you.

Wonderful place! Great location! Love sitting on the porch! So relaxing.

Very nice and comfortable home just a block away from the downtown Lewisburg main street with shops and restaurants. Easy drive to the interstate and Wal Mart if you need anything substantial. The fire alarm is very sensitive and we hope that we did not alarm the neighbors when we were fixing meals in the kitchen.

We truly enjoyed our stay at this quaint cottage. It has a very "homey" feel with personal touches throughout. The porch and yard are spectacular! The location can't be beat....only a short walk to historic Lewisburg. The house was just as represented and Elinor is quick to respond to questions. We hope to stay here again.

We have enjoyed another great visit to Lewisburg and the Verdie May cottage. This house has become our home away from home after several years of staying here. We love the house and can't get enough of enjoying the porch. There is so much to do in this area regardless of your interests and it means so much to have this comfy home to get back to each evening. This year we spent a day at the Greenbrier and one at the New River Gorge. We always take time to enjoy a few of the great Lewisburg restaurants including the Livery, French Goat and Stardust. No matter what type of food or price range you have, there are such good options in Lewisburg and White Sulphur. The farmer's market was excellent as always and we loved going home with a cooler full of goodness to enjoy this week. We are already booked for our next stay and can't wait to return.

This was our second stay at the cottage. We love sitting on the porch and the short walk to town. My 2 year old daughter loved running around in the backyard and playing in the fountain downtown. You have everything that you will need in this house. I highly recommend tickets to the Greenbrier Valley theater. We were able to walk to the show from this cottage. We loved our baked goods from Fresh Flours! We already booked our stay for next summer! Elinor keeps a great house and it is beautifully decorated! We feel so comfortable staying here!!
