About this house rental
The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!
Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping--all within walking distance. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.
The Recycled House sleeps 6. There's a king-sized bed in the main bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. The sofa sleepers are very comfortable. All the linens are soft and the towels are fluffy. There's a half-bath downstairs and a full bath upstairs.
The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a tree house feel, and another deck off the kitchen in the back yard.
A washer/dryer is available off the upstairs bath.
Free wi-fi access is available.
The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.
If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House! For a sneak peak, check out the video at recycled.house.

Our stay was short, but we enjoyed meeting Debra and hearing how the Recycled House came to be. The property is in a beautiful location. The amenities provided were perfect. We would stay here again.

The Recycled House has everything you will need for a visit to C'ville and is only steps from the historic downtown. Debra has included so many thoughtful touches and amenities. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, and in the evenings I watched deer and rabbits nibble the lawn while the fireflies danced. I appreciated having all the comforts of a home and great access to the best the city has to offer. I'll definitely be back.

My wife and I spent 4 nights at the fun, quirky Recycled House. Debra, our host, met us when we arrived and gave us a quick tour explaining all the recycled, reclaimed, refurbished and rescued pieces that made the home. The location of the house is great--walking distance to the downtown mall and many great restaurants and shops. Debra provided a list of recommended restaurants, several wine tours and information regarding UVA and Monticello. The house is only minutes drive from all of this. The house has a dedicated, off-street parking spot, a comfortable bed and a full kitchen if you decide against all the great restaurants.
When we come back to Charlottesville, we will try to book this place first!

My wife and I went for a week. We were told that the tv was available to take out of the closet and it never happened. After amazing days of visiting the sites and breathtaking wineries, we enjoyed the peace and quiet of this house. Located in the middle of everything, there was easy access to food, drink and shopping. Everything in the house was eye catching and a conversation starter. This was an amazing and much needed experience. When, not if, we come back, I will be doing my best to stay in this house again. Absolutely no complaints or concerns. Thank you for a wonderful week.

It was a privilege to find this place and be able to stay in it. It’s unique and one-of-a-kind, definitely a labor of love. The location is in the heart of historic downtown Charlottesville. You can walk to the market, restaurants, movies or music in the park. It’s perfect. Debra greeted us with cookies from the local bakery, fresh ground coffee and a few extras in the fridge. She was warm and friendly and we felt it was treat to stay in this place. Pictures are accurate but you must see in person. Very clean. Beds are high quality and comfortable. Sleeps 6. We will definitely return!

We stayed at the Recycle House in 2019 when visiting our daughter who was a first year student at UVA. We enjoyed it so much that we made sure to reserve it a second time in May 2023 when we came to see her graduate! It was just as we remembered it and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is a lovely and comfortable house with so much unique character. Debra is an attentive host with great communication. The house has everything you could possibly need or want and the location can’t be beat. The freshly ground coffee and delicious cookies waiting for us when we arrived were an extra special treat! We look forward to staying here again the next time we come to Charlottesville.

What a beautiful home! Debbie was gracious enough to meet us upon arrival to go through the history of the house along with pointing out where everything was. Before our arrival she pointed out some must-see features of beautiful Charlottesville! The house was whimsical, charming and had everything you could need, and our walks through the UVA campus, and dinner at C&Os was amazing for an intimate anniversary dinner. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality and an amazing stay at your Recycle House Jewel! David and Kristin

Cute and convenient
We had a great stay for graduation weekend here. Home is easily accessible to all parts of Charlottesville area, has parking and a well appointed kitchen. Debra left thoughtful
touches for our arrival-delicious cookies and coffee for the morning. Beds are comfy and access to laundry came in handy. Debra was also flexible and kind about our checkout when we had an unexpected ER visit with one of our sons.

Close To UVA Hospital (7-10 minute drive)
We rented The Recycled House to stay in while our son had major spine surgery at UVA hospital. The home was my haven after long days sitting in the hospital. Due to Covid restrictions only one of us could stay with our son, my husband spent his days at the Recycled House. He was thankful it was close enough to walk to Main St and many little shops and restaurants to occupy his time and mind. The owner, Debra, was so wonderful about communication and assistance. We had an issue with parking and one of the “Karen” neighbors who wasn’t happy with us parking across the alley where we’d been instructed to park. Debra responded immediately when I texted that the neighbor lady had confronted us. She meet us at the home and showed us an alternate location to park. Tip….. Don’t drive a big vehicle, we drove our Nissan Titan double cab truck, parking at the Recycled House and in the hospital parking garage, as well as, a majority of the little shops are not laid out to accommodate a large vehicle. This was the only hiccup during our stay. I appreciate Debra being close by and responding immediately. Debra said she keeps the house stocked as if friends are coming over to stay. She truly does a lovely job of accommodating your every need from her handmade laundry detergent to her bringing delicious cookies by to welcome us. The Recycled House is in a very populated neighborhood but inside it is so quiet you forget there are neighbors on all sides. This is a great home for reading a book and relaxing. Thank you Debra for allowing us to rent your home. It was 1000% better than staying in a hotel near the hospital!

Wonderfully Quirky
We can't wait to return to this wonderfully quirky - in the best possible way - home. Debra, the owner, has created warm, welcoming, and charming interiors filled with natural light. The location, just a short walk to shops and restaurants, can't be beat. Given it's in-city setting, we were surprised by the quiet and tranquility. If the somewhat steep stairs aren't an issue for you, this is a must-stay in downtown Charlottesville.

We loved the Recycled House!
Thank you, Debra, for sharing your amazing, quirky (in a great way) and very comfortable house with us. We enjoyed the tour and hearing the story of how it came to be. We were in town to visit our son at UVA and though we were on the go most of the weekend, we were able to find some time to enjoy and relax by the lovely fireplace. The bed is comfy, heated floors in the baths were cozy and the house had all of amenities we needed, including delicious cookies in the cookie jar! The neighborhood is nice, quiet and an easy walk from the downtown mall. We look forward to staying there again!
