It's a shame but this property is not well kept. I have been coming to Idlywild for many years staying in vacation homes. This is the first time I have stayed at a property that was unacceptable. Aside from little things I did not complain about, like the outside decks not being cleaned (covered with dust, pollen and no cushions put out), as well as cobwebs everywhere, window screens missing, no sliding door screen, meaning we could not open them because bugs, birds and critters can get in, along with little air ventilation because master fan was not working and it was hot - we were faced with mice in the house. Apparently this was not a new problem as we noticed later there were little traps of which one had a fresh dead mouse in it in the cushion closet. The mice we saw started late at night, running in the game room and middle dining room, one was in the closet climbing the walls. We noticed there is a gap between the garage carport wall and floor in the game room where they can come and go freely. The management company did find us a new place at 11:30 at night which was appreciated but they did not adjust the price as the other place was smaller and rented for much less per day. Needless to say, bad experience overall. Hopefully the problems at Moonlight have been addressed by now- ask before booking.

I hate to leave this review but I hope it will help other people when booking in Idyllwild. Due to windows and doors not sealing, we had an issue with mice starting the evening we checked in. New Spirit was very helpful by bringing traps to help take care of the problem. However, even with the additional traps, we continued to see mice throughout our stay. On the day before we checked out, there were baby mice in blanket used by our grandson.
On top of the problem with mice, the house was extremely warm due to not being able to open all the windows. Most of the windows were missing screens so they could not be used without letting bugs getting in the house. We were not able to utilize the upstairs bedroom with single beds. It was too hot to sleep in that room.
We were in communication with New Spirit Vacations throughout our stay. They were extremely helpful. The last night they moved us to a different house that was much nicer. I would not hesitate to rent one of their houses due to them making up for the issues during our stay. However, I would not stay in this house until they address the mice, screens, and a few other maintenance items.

The cabin was perfect for family of nine (5 teens, 4 adults). The best feature was the beautiful view on the ample deck. After long day, it was nice to be able to relax in the Jacuzzi, play pool, and enjoy a hot meal that we cooked in the well-stocked kitchen. We would return here in a heartbeat. Bring sleep eye masks so the sun doesn't wake you in the morning. There are no windows coverings in the bedrooms.

Moonlight Mountain Retreat accommodated our family of 8 with ease. Plenty of bedding and towels, and i was pleasantly surprised to find even the mattress cover on the pull out couches were clean! Kitchen was well stocked. It was quiet, peaceful, and really a beautiful setting, yet just a few minutes drive to town so it was easy to make as many trips as we wanted. We had lots of fun with the pool table and shuffle board, and the multiple TV’s were great. The house is so unique and all of the wood working is gorgeous. Even though it was extra hot weather and the house doesn’t have AC, the rental provided fans, there is actually quite a bit of shade over some areas of the house, and at night the temp was perfect for sleeping with the windows open. We would definitely stay here again.

Our family spent time between Christmas and New Year at the home. Everyone had a good time. We were a little caught off guard when the anticipated snow flurries turned into quite a blanket of snow and we weren’t able to get our All Wheel Car out of the driveway and down the hill without sliding. Fortunately a guy named Kevin, on the snow assist list available from the rental company, came and dug us out for a reasonable price. The rooms were a bit cold even though there are a number of portable heaters, but they also provide a lot of blankets. The kitchen has most items you would need, including a crock pot, pans, baking utensils and plenty of plates, bowls, etc. The coffee pot had some issues in draining the water through the filter, but we made it work. All in all, a lovely home. We may try again during summer months when we can take greater advantage of the outdoor decking. Finally, the work working features throughout the home are amazing.

PROS:
Excellent communication with the property management!
Check-in and out was quick and easy.
Loved the location. A little hard to find at first, and the directions they gave us from the check-in location to the cabin were incorrect, but once we found Foster Lake Rd., it was a breeze.
LOVED the layout of the cabin. Unique and spacious, yet cozy. Perfect for 10 people. We were all very comfortable.
Our ages ranged from 3 to 50 years old and we all loved partaking in the game room amenities and Smart TVs.
The record player and record collection were a nice touch. Even the 20somethings loved listening to the Doors and Eagles albums.
AWESOME views from the balcony and patio. So peaceful and quiet outside!
Woodwork and wood accents throughout the cabin are gorgeous.
Kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed.
Loved that there was a small market close by in case we needed food or supplies.
CONS:
Disrepair issues: Broken blinds, loose toilet seats, peeling paint and torn shower curtain in downstairs restroom (and shower curtain wasn’t waterproof), BBQ grill table is wobbly, torn patio cushions, broken oven door (bottom left door), worn carpet on stairs.
Cleaning issues: Cabin was tidy, but once we settled in we noticed dusty furniture and ledges, caked-on grease splatters on kitchen windows above stove, cobwebs in corners, windows & glass doors heading out to the patio needed to be cleaned/squeegeed, a leaf blower to porch and patio would have been nice, some ceiling light fixtures had dead bugs in them. Some of these issues could be alleviated by having a good bi-monthly deep cleaning.
Only a bottle of Windex was provided. No disinfecting cleaners for kitchen or restrooms, nor Pledge to clean the wood tables or wood accents.
Outside BBQ grill (small silver one) has no grease catch tray, so grease leaks onto the table when you use it. Also, one propane tank didn’t work.
Overall, we all had such an amazing time and created great family memories here! We’d definitely love to stay here again and would highly recommend it to others if the disrepair and cleaning issues are tended to.
RECOMMENDATIONS IF YOU PLAN TO STAY HERE:
Sleep masks (There’s no curtains/blinds in certain rooms), Keurig machine if that’s your jam, cleaning supplies, about 6 nightlights for those late night bathroom/kitchen runs, a metal grill spatula for grill outside, and at least one good knife for cutting food (the kitchen knives they had were very dull).

We chose this location based on proximity to various family members, and a peaceful getaway for us to spend time together. This rental lived up to every expectation we had for eight people and two small dogs. the bedrooms are spacious with fold-out space as the number of members expanded for the weekend. The deck provides a beautiful view to relax with a beverage. We never felt cramped, yet we could gather in small groups without interfering with the rest of the group. Perfect for family dynamics in a wooded setting.
P.S. when they tell you to ignore GPS and follow provided directions, believe them.

The one complain we had was that the back door did not lock, and we had to use a chair to improvise. Otherwise it was perfect for our weekend getaway.

The Deck is amazing with a great view. The house is big with lots of space to hang out. It was clean and the beds are comfortable.
It is confusing how to get to it, the sign is placed after the turn and hard to see. But once you know where you are going it's fine.
It was really hot in the main living area and had no AC. but if you open all the windows and doors it does cool down a little.

The Pros outweighed the Cons. The house was open with ample furniture. It has a pool table, shuffleboard, games a plenty, and a turntable with some great albums. There is an awesome deck and beautiful view. The location is great...less than a mile to town and close to some of the best hiking spots. The Cons: We stayed here in late June and the outside temps were around 85 degrees. The house does not have any A/C nor many window coverings, so it was miserably hot except for the entry way room and the room with the pool table. The upstairs bedrooms got terribly hot even with fans. It helped to open windows, but there were not many that had screens, so you couldn't or you'd be eaten by bugs. Also, with no window covers, expect to be awakened around 5:30-6:00 am (not necessarily a bad thing if you're on vacation I guess). This may be a better rental for winter than summer. We checked out a day early, simply because it was too hot to spend another night. But the check-in process was easy and it really is a nice home. Just don't think about staying there when it's hot out.

Fun Family Weekend
The house was amazing. Our group of 10 had plenty of room to share meals and hang out on the deck with more than enough seating. The kitchen had everything we needed to make full meals, even the pots and pans were really nice. Most of the time in Rentals the pots are horrible. Snow Trip
This is our second time staying in the Moonlight Mountain Retreat. We loved our stay, both trips we were lucky to have it snow one day before our trip. This last trip our family gathered to celebrate my father in law’s birthday, we were a party of ten and this house was perfect for our party size. The kids enjoyed the snow, the surrounding property provided us with a private snow play area. We look forward to coming back next year. The check in process was quick and easy. Communication with property agency was also a breeze. Highly recommend staying at Moonlight Mountain Retreat.

Breath of Fresh Air
My family, mom, mom's boyfriend, brother, brother in law, son (18), son (15), and I stayed here for a weekend. Celebrating my 18 year olds bday, we spent the weekend relaxing,competing, and playing games. The home is charming and well laid out for space. My dog and I really enjoyed the deck and the skylight in the card room. The kitchen is well situated as it's close to the deck and a living room and also well equipped. I only took a few prefered kitchen tools. This home offered many nice touches. We all enjoyed the turntable and LPS of ranging classic to contemporary sounds. The game room was an instant hit. We all played pool and shuffleboard. One wall in the game room had no power. We didn't mind though as we didn't need TV and just moved the heater to the other wall. I slept on the couch upstairs and in both of the twin beds, both were comfortable. Our weekend there was totally awesome. I would stick to walking on the roads rather than inbetween the homes though. I attempted to walk down to see the boulders and the neighbor lady scolded me for being on her property. I was 25 yards away from her home walking my dog, coffee in hand. I did not think I was close enough to bother nor looked like trouble. That was the only low, but not related directly to the home. I recommend this retreat to all.

Lovely Thanksgiving getaway
We LOVED our stay at this cabin! The game rooms were super fun, we build a fire, had hot chocolate, used the hot tub, hiked, played pool, and it has a cabinet full of board games we explored. My son loved the reading nook. Beds we comfy! Cabin didn't have curtains, but after the initial adjustment period, we got used to it and it's so secluded we didn't need them. It is hard to find though, and there are 2 different entrances to Foster lake road. So if you don't know that and miss the 1st entrance (which we did obviously) then the directions from the key pick up are wrong. The direction can be a little more in depth even, noting this. we ended up in a ditch and needed to call AAA like idiots, so don't be like us (Don't turn down the hill to the quarry!). AND google does not help you find the cabin, it's WRONG. So just really talk to the people at checkin, and the printed out instruction they give you are pretty sparse. You take a right on the 1st foster lake road, it's right after a White House on a hill, and the blue "PINE COVE" sign, and it come REALLY fast. and it's not just a hard right, but almost a U-turn up a hill. Then you turn LEFT before you pass the new spirit reality sign. Once we were stuck in a ditch though they sent someone from the office to take the kids and myself to the cabin and show us where it was while my husband waited only 20 mins for the tow truck, so all good!

Highly recommend staying in this lovely cabin/home. The house is beautiful and in a great location to town, hikes, and lakes. You won’t regret your stay here. Prior to arriving ask the management team about the side road you have to take to get down to the house because it’s not on the main road.

True Mountain Retreat and Perfect Town
The pictures and descriptions of the house and town exceeded expectations. The cabin and location on the hill was truly a mountain retreat with character at every corner. The vacation rental company were so friendly and available with ease if we ever needed them. We would come to this town again without hesitation and would also love to rent through the vacation rental company.
