The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. While not super fancy, it doesn’t have to be. It sits on a hilltop with beautiful views. Oak trees surround you as you sip coffee in the morning and watch the sunset on the porch in the evening. Cute little fountain in the front. We loved it!

Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth and fall ardently for this enchanting inn that poetically speaks to your heart and soul simply to remind you that magic still exists in this world. Once you have stayed, you will never look at the world in the same way, having been reminded that the whole universe is actually in love with you! The care and beauty of this place wraps you in comfort, peace and belonging. It's as if you fell down a rabbit hole in time and discovered fairytales do exist when you allow yourself to become the story. Abandon your phone and linger in the grass, eyes skyward in awe under 300 year oak trees. Walk through the coveted garden and taste the "sweetest" of apricots or blackberries (or whatever else is growing). Nestle on the porch in the evening and be caressed by the late afternoon ocean breeze. There's really no need to rest, it's truly a dream of dreams. I did not want to leave any review as I don't want the place to be found at all, but I owe Mr. O'Malley the truth and elegance of his efforts and work. He is simply the kindest of souls on top of this remarkable inn. Please don't book in September (I will be back for my birthday!!!).

We had a great stay at Portola Inn last weekend. Tom is an excellent host and he is very helpful and responsive. The location is so beautiful and serene with the views of the mountains and the garden. I was traveling with my dad and it was the perfect place to relax and recharge. Thanks Tom.

The grounds are stunning with the majestic oaks and rolling hills in the distance! Shared wine between friends and family at sunset in that setting on the cottage deck was just delightful! The cottage was accessible for my elderly father with his walker. The kitchen was stocked with all the basic things you need on a holiday. Our stay was made even better by Tom and Peggy’s welcoming ways! We are looking forward to staying again on our next trip to A-town!

Fourth time at Portola Inn Guest House for my wife and I and our dog.

Lovely, private retreat. Good wi-fi for remote work, comfortable bed for sleep, lovely property for walks with the dog. Tom was very responsive to the one request we did make.
The only, very slight, disappointment was that the kitchen was not outfitted very well or stocked with basics. Beautiful stove/oven but a ragtag assortment of pots and pans with a handle that fell off, no mixing bowls, no way to make ice.
As the host of a vacation rental I can be hyper-critical but this beautiful retreat should be above these little flaws!

We loved our stay at Portola Inn. It is a very comfortable accomodation located atop a beautifully landscaped property with lovely views. There are many trees (including some gorgeous oaks!), gardens, paths, and herb plantings to enjoy. The open concept guest house was well equipped with everything we needed for our weeklong stay. The porch is perfect for morning coffee, reading a book, or just enjoying the views. The hosts are very gracious and attentive to requests. Our pup Finn gives the property an enthusiastic two paws up. He had walks every day through the trails, lots of quality porch time, and even met his first goat. What a luxury to have such a dog friendly accomodation! We came to the Central Coast to help with a family crisis and are so grateful to have found this oasis of peace and nature to return to after a long day. Many thanks to the O'Malleys for their kind hospitality!

My parents used this guest house to winter in from Idaho. We now live in Idaho also and need to come visit our family that is still in California. My mom suggested I check the Portola Inn and thankfully it was available. A cozy house in a beautiful property. It does need a bit of updating (utensils, pots and pans, bedding) but we had a fabulous time. Would stay here again for sure!!

The guest house in in the back of the property surrounded by beautiful oaks. The view from the porch is so serene and relaxing. You feel like you are in the country and only a short drive to a cute town. We were greeted by the host, Tom who was friendly and informative. There are walking trails and a charming garden. Would definitely stay again

This was an excellent locations for our needs, as it has easy access to main streets and a 20 min scenery drive to the coast, where we spent most of our time.
the unit is very clean and safe, and our host was courteous, and generous by waiting for us with a bottle of wine for our 25yr. anniversary. Thank you!
I would definitely stay again.

We stayed for a quick weekend for a wedding. Tom was so helpful and sweet! Bed was comfy as well as the pullout sofa for our son. Beautiful views, and we loved the swing and picnic area below. So appreciated the laundry available! Wonderful to have clean clothes to take along. Thank you so much, we hope to be back your way soon! 10 out of 10!!!

Wonderful place to stay
My wife and I and our dog stayed three nghts during a heat wave. Very much appreciated the excellent AC. Sitting on the porch in the evening for wine and meals was great. The host, Tom, was very responsive and helpful. The guest house is on five acres that are beautifully landscaped. Anyone who stays should visit the garden and see th apricot trees planted in 1913. Very quiet. A great loction to explore and enjoy the central coast.

Perfect Quiet Retreat
From the moment I booked, Tom’s communication was spot on! I was greeted by family members when I arrived and then Tom gave me a tour of the property. I was then left alone to enjoy the beautiful, peace and quiet with my pup. Everything was wonderful. Thank you Tom and Peggy! Miles and I will be back!

Cal Poly Graduation
We usually stay in SLO but decided to stay a little farther out for graduation. The guest house at Portola Inn was a perfect get away from the craziness of SLO and all the people and activities. It had a kitchen so we could have prepared breakfast there and a great swing in the front where we could end the day with a glass of wine. Dog friendly and a great grass area for the dogs. We’ll be back to explore more of Atascadero and the nearby wine country!

One of the most pleasant property we have been!!
The owner Tom, has a keen eye for beauty in every corner of his property. The only Guest House, is nestled in behind were events take place. With a beautiful views of robust trees, mountains and grass where we took some sun with our 4 legged Babies. Morning coffee in the porch seeing birds using the 2 turtle fountain was a delight! The beautiful property has well thought trails full of trees, flowers and plenty of places to sit and relax. We thank Tom and family for such a memorable time and well deserved R and R!! We will come back without hesitations.

Cozy in the Countryside
The guest house at Portola Inn was just what the doctor ordered! This place was absolutely stunning! We rejuvenated in the peaceful and private countryside while enjoying all that Atascadero had to offer! We walked the beautifully manicured grounds and felt right at home. Tom is a wonderful person! We enjoyed this place so much and can't wait to come back again :)

Cozy, quiet retreat
This guest house was perfect for the quiet getaway we were looking for. The grounds were lovely with nice paths to stroll with our dog. The house itself had ample extra bedding and washer and dryer. We cooked a lot during our stay. The stove was very nice. The pans and utensils were a bit basic for what we needed but still worked out pretty well. The host, Tom, went out of his way to be helpful. He loaned us an Ethernet cable and gave us good recommendations for a local seafood market/restaurant. He was available by phone for most of our stay and got back to us pretty quickly to answer our questions. The location was a short drive to Morro Bay and SLO for the days we wanted to be out and about. There’s not a lot going on in Atascadero itself but there’s a cute downtown area with shops and restaurants that we enjoyed. Overall we had a wonderful stay and definitely recommend this property.
