Peregrine House is situated on a quiet road in a peaceful location with a lovely view of the bay and gorgeous sunsets. There is easy access to the town of Castine and the house is a short walk to the beach where we enjoyed swimming. The house was well-equipped. The beds and living area were comfortable. Mary Lou was responsive to our questions and needs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Our family of eight adults and two kids had a wonderful time in Castine! The house had a lot of amenities and was close to the town with boat launch and to a beach in walking distance. We visited Bar Harbor and Acadia national park but make note it is about an hour and a half drive. We checked out the Fort Knox in Bucksport and went to the top of the bridge tower. Mary Lou was very easy to get in touch with. Castine is a very historic town with a wonderful museum. We also got lobsters to cook at the house from Eaton’s boat yard at a great price. If you’re looking for quiet, relaxing, reading, swimming, having a lobster bake of your own and watching amazing sunsets, this is the place to go. if you want to be busy with shopping and lots of site seeing activity, you might want to stay closer to a bigger city.

The property location was lovely and peaceful. The main level of the home, loft, enclosed porch were very nice. I traveled with my husband, my sister, brother in law and their adult daughter. They stayed in the “lower level” bedrooms and really felt like they were in a basement despite the door leading outside. They ended up buying a blow up mattress and slept on the main level because of spiders and the overall atmosphere on that level. For what we paid for the week, we expected better. This is really a place for a couple and small child. With some updating, it could be a beautiful spot for a larger group such as ours. I was hesitant to write this but wished we had been made away of the lower level arrangements. We did let Mary Lou know as well.

7 of us, ranging in age from 7 to 72, spread out on all three floors, but watching the sunset from the screened porch or deck was truly spectacular and loved by all. The girls adored climbing on the rocks and kicking the soccer ball.
We all enjoyed strolls to the public beach, feeling the wind rustling through the trees, flowers nestled throughout the property, and picking ripe red raspberries. Just a note to future renters: We loved having 3 bathrooms! The owner, Mary, was always reachable when we had questions. We could tell this home had been treasured by her family for a long time. There were definitely tears when we took a farewell look at the waves and sky. Memories were made in this oasis by the sea.

Relaxing, wonderful stay. If you're looking for peace and quiet and a chance to get away from it all, this is the place. It is 45 minutes to the nearest lobster pound, Belfast or Camden and about an hour away from Acadia, but still easy enough to do day trips. The house was very clean and owner was responsive and helpful. Check-in was easy and we quickly made ourselves at home. It is a nice balance between a modern Maine home and quaint cottage to give just the perfect Maine-getaway feel. The sunsets are also beautiful to watch from the wraparound deck.

Lovely, quiet property on Coast of Castine. Plenty of room for two adults and two teens. Comfortable beds! Host was very communicative. Would definitely rent this property again if opportunity came up.

This had everything we were looking for. Heavily used the fleet of kayaks, the campfire, and the nearby beach just a two minute walk away. We enjoyed the open concept main floor for congregating.

Castine is beautiful and we couldn’t have asked for a better location. We were very close to a public beach, which our dogs loved. The view from the house is amazing and the yard is lovely. To be fair to future travelers, we have to be honest about the house. To say it needs updating is a huge understatement. The decor is old, but not quaint and cute, we’re talking 80’s garage sale. A lounge chair with duct tape on it hiding a tear. A deck chair that ripped as soon as my husband sat on it. The kitchen is ill equipped for much cooking. Limited tools and not one baking sheet or roasting pan. Plan to eat out although there are very limited restaurants in town. And there is no A/C. I suppose people in Maine know to look for this, but not people from Texas. It was horribly hot and humid on the second and third floors. The description said there were fans, but they were caked in dust so we had to go buy more. The basement was cooler because of the dehumidifier so we slept there by pushing the two twin beds together. There’s only one TV and it’s on the second floor so no curling up in bed and watching TV. It is a smart TV so there’s that. The beach behind the property was really just a bunch of huge rocks and seaweed. I’ve never seen bathrooms like these. I don’t really even know how to describe them, plastic, old grout, Formica. Let’s just say I stopped shaving my legs so I could get in and out as quickly as possible. Again, nice location, but not very comfortable for us.

The house is lovely and the views and sunsets are breathtaking! My grandsons enjoyed kayaking, lawn games and of course a fire and smoores. My daughter’s wedding was held at the Wilson Museum and family and friends came from all over the east coast to be with us. Also celebrated my birthday on the beach nearby with a lobster boil! We all had a wonderful time!

What a lovely spot in Castine! Tucked away on the back shore area, we enjoyed exploring the cove with the kayaks, made use of the well-stocked kitchen, played spirited games of Scrabble, and were wowed by the gorgeous sunsets. Mary Lou was incredibly responsive when needed. We hope to return soon!

The house was exactly as described, in a beautiful, quiet spot on the Maine coast, a short walk down from a sandy beach. We enjoyed paddling with the provided kayaks, exploring Castine and nearby towns, and just hanging out on the porches in by the fire pit. Mary Lou was very responsive and easy to work with.

We really enjoyed the quiet beauty of this property. The sunsets alone are worth coming for.

We had such a fantastic week here! Mary Lou was really great with communication before and during our stay. The house was very clean and it was very well suited for our family of 6 in terms of sleeping arrangements and amenities (kayaks, games, etc.) for the kids. We are so grateful that we found this place!

Really enjoyed 10 days at Peregrine House. Easy place to stay. Plenty of room for 6 adults and a dog. Great views, easy access to Castine which is quiet and lovely. Short walk to small beach nearby and steps down to rocks behind the house. Kayaks were a plus. The fans and blinds kept the house cool day and night, even tho there is no air conditioning. Evening breezes ensured a comforable night. The beds were comfortable. A couple of twin beds were past their prime and the host very quickly replaced them. Kitchen was well stocked. Could use a veg peeler and a salad spinner, otherwise we had everything we could possibly need including a large refrigerator that could hold a lot of food and made good ice. House was easy to spread out in. Excellent washer and dryer made staying clean a breeze. All in all a terrific house for a small crowd. Easy to entertain both inside and outside with lots of room to spread out. Located on quiet street just outside of Castine on Penobscot Bay, Real value for the money and the host is easy to reach and very responsive.

Perfect Peregrine
Oh how we have missed spending time at Peregrine House and how how happy we were to return! Our week was sheer bliss, as always. Everyone slept like babies, read lots of books, kayaked, found a big chunky seal lazing around in the cove, ate lobsters and steamers for supper several evenings, took long walks, long naps.....Perfect Peregrine.

Great house on the water down the street from the beach
We had a great time at the property with its large deck overlooking the water and stairs down to the cove. We used the kayaks in the cove and saw porpoises off blockhouse point. Swimming at Wadsworth Cove Beach was very nice. Check in was easy. Good communication with Mary Lou. You can walk to Witherle Woods where there are nice trails. House was well provisioned. Downstairs twin beds were a little soft but great for kids.

Views, views and more beautiful views!
We just got back from a perfect vacation at the Peregrine house!
The house was very comfortable with views from every window.
Sitting out on the deck, watching a neighboring bald eagle fly by during a spectacular sunset or spying on sea lions with your morning coffee was all the reason you need to stay at this lovely home.
Mary was a great host by making sure that everything was to our liking. Our only complaint and it was a minor one, was the need for the lawn to be mowed. It was nearly 8 inches long during our week here and could be blamed on a shortage of landscaping crew, thanks to Covid or the heavy rains they experienced the previous week. Small issue however, since we'd be eager to spend another week in the future.

Beautiful spot
Enjoyed our stay at the Peregrine House. The sunsets over the bay from the house were different each night but always beautiful (rain or shine). The area is pretty remote with restaurants operating sporadically (covid hangover?) but Mary was very helpful in terms of recommending grocery stores. Highly recommend the bioluminescence kayak tour from castine kayaking, taking the boat to isle au haute (from Stonington), and hiking Barred Island and Edgar Tennis preserves. Kayaking from the house was also a lot of fun with calm water. Great place to vacation in nature!

Beautiful view, sleepy town during COVID vacation
I miss those unbelievable sunsets. We travelled to Bar Harbor twice and it is only about 1 hr 15 minutes away. House was perfect for us and had large yard and gas grill.

Absolutely amazing!
The Peregrine House was absolutely perfect. From the stunning views to the beautiful home there was nothing that you could want for. The home is supplied with everything you might want or need. Must say though that the epic moment for us was kayaking in the little inlet and having 2 seals come and join us. Wonderful memories made here.

Maine Get Away
This is a beautiful place to have a vacation. Incredible view of the water, star-filled skies at night, and access to the ocean. The homeowner was very generous with providing bikes, and kayaks to use while there. My husband and daughter went kayaking in the bay and saw seals and starfish. My daughters were amazed at how many stars were in the sky. They enjoyed toasting marshmallows and looking up at the sky. It was a wonderful relaxing break from our daily lives.

Peaceful spot to relax! Wonderful views of the water!
The house was very clean and comfortable for a family of four and our two dogs. We were very pleased with all the location had to offer. My sons enjoyed kayaking on the calm waters. Watching the sunset We really enjoyed our stay here.

A True Treasure
My family stayed for about a week around the 4th of July weekend. It was probably one of our most enjoyable/memorable trips. The house/location were great, the town of Castine unbelievably charming, the area of Maine stunning. Mary Lou's home was a home-away-from home, spacious/comfortable but then so much more. We agree that the pictures don’t do it justice. A big highlight for us was the bay, kayaking, and exploring the rocky shore when the tide was out with our dog who could not get enough of the clear, crisp water! In the evenings, we'd cook a big dinner, have a glass of wine on the deck, and sit around the outdoor fire pit later in the evening. It was all just very relaxing and fun. Mary Lou couldn't be more hospitable and accommodating. Had a few questions along the way and she was always available to help. This was her family's home for many years and the care she has put into it shows. Thank you, Mary Lou for a great family memory.

Stunning Views and Comfortable/Cozy Home
We had a wonderful stay! It is one of those homes that makes you feel comfortable as you walk in the door. It had every thing we needed with the most tremendous views of the bay. We loved watching the seals daily and my children even named one "Sir Sergio the Seal". Castine was a sweet little town with gorgeous homes and small markets/stores and the beech was quiet and clean. Went to Stonington which has a lot of artists and cute stores as well. Had the most amazing dinner at 'Fin and Fern', so check it out if you are in the area. We also went to Holbrook Island Sanctuary, Acadia NP and walked around Booth Bay with all its quaint stores. Although our time there was brief, we enjoyed every moment of this wonderful home and the surrounding area. I would highly recommend.

Peregrine House
Incredible view, cozy, immaculate house located in a peaceful and quiet neighborhood. There is a lot of love the was put into Peregrine House to make it as special as it is. The house is spacious enough that 8 people weren’t bumping into each other, we were all comfortable and in awe of the view the entire time. I loved how it was almost hidden from the road but then the property opens up to a large yard right on the bay.

Idyllic Cottage Close to Town
We had a wonderful stay at Peregrine House in July. Even though we were there on the hottest day of summer, the ocean breezes kept us cool enough.
This cottage is perfect for walks and quick trips to town, golf, access to Wadsworth Cove and Beach, The Maine Maritime Academy, and all that Castine has to offer including must-have meals at Markel's and Castine Variety.
We used it as a base to do the classic Maine stuff-
Bucksport (where I grew up)
Lobstering out of Stockton Harbor (with an old high school buddy) along with a trip to Sears Island
Kayaking to Holbrook Island
Blue Hill
Bar Harbor/Acadia
and more
The cottage is very well equipped with everything you need, for example fans, kayaks, life preservers, deck/porch/lawn seating, lobster cooking and eating utensils, to name a few. The owner takes pride in making sure everything is in tip top shape for guests.
We will likely go back as it is that good and well located.

Perfect Quiet Getaway!
We really enjoyed our stay in Castine! The house was clean and beautiful! We have two children and they loved the big yard and exploring the shore line at low tide. The view is priceless, especially at sun set. This house is perfect for sometime away from the hustle and bustle, and to rest and relax! However it is quiet a drive to some of the more popular tourist spots like Acadia, Bar Harbor, etc. I highly recommend this home!

Excellent Location
What I like most about the property is the view and the screened porch, which enhances your ability to enjoy the view! The proximity to Castine and other area attractions is a major plus. The house is accessible and private, but not isolated. All things considered, it is a very pleasant place to enjoy the sunsets.

Second Summer
Our second summer at Peregrine House didn't disappoint!!! It truly is like coming home! We enjoyed gorgeous sunsets, long walks, napping, day trips to Lincolnville and Blue Hill (had to pick up a few rosa rugosas to bring home), cooking lobsters in the outdoor cookers, reading books, playing games and just relaxing in peace and quiet. We cannot wait to return to Peregrine House next summer!!!

Lovely Home in Castine
This location of this home is fantastic. Although the approach down to the water is pretty steep, there is a very accessible beach within easy walking distance. The home was very clean and well-equipped and the owners provided more paper products and supplies than most rentals. We spent a lot of time on the sun porch just watching the water and the birds. There were 2 of us plus a dog for 4 nights, plus an extra 2 people for two nights, so we used all 4 bedrooms at some point. Our only negative comment would be that the mattresses in the basement rooms were in need of replacement. We could hear springs popping and they were not very comfortable. The queen beds in the loft bedroom were a little better. We enjoyed the whirlpool tub in the loft bathroom. The owners provided lots of towels, extra blankets and pillows. We were looking for peace and quiet and we found it. Apparently we hit the sweet spot between Maine Maritime graduation and the onset of tourists. Castine was very quiet, and while we wouldn't have minded a couple more restaurants and a shop or two, we were very happy with it as it was. The neighborhood was mostly quiet and very quiet at night. There were some dogs in the neighborhood that were not fenced which stopped us from walking our dog on the road. Never could catch the owners outside long enough to see if their dogs were okay with dogs walking by, so we kept our dog on leash in the yard. The cable TV and internet worked well. We did experience some spotty cell service (on Verizon). We enjoyed a hike in Witherle Woods to the top of Blockhouse Point. It was an easy hike with a beautiful view to reward our efforts. We visited the lighthouse and downtown Castine. Loved the food at the Castine Variety so much that we went twice. The crab and lobster were so fresh; the owner says she gets it right from the fishermen every morning. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, this is the place (at least this time of year!)

exceptional location and accomodations
A most wonderful time at Peregrine cottage. We drove to Ellsworth and Deer Isle, as well as to Bucksport and the observatory. Plenty of time to enjoy the sunsets and relax. The house is very comfortable and quiet, with a short distance to the center of Castine, and restaurants, as well as driving through the quaint little village. Thanks so much for providing a special week...Leo Martin-Joyce Martin-Donna and Paul McNamara
