The location and the view

No outside lights, steep, dangerous stairs, old kitchen, door and cupboards jammed, no wifi, significant health and safety issues

What a view! All the back windows, the deck and yard have an outlook that spans the snow-capped Kaikoura range on the left across the beach and ocean. It's a quirky house with large master bedroom downstairs and an extension that's added two bedrooms upstairs. Upstairs bedroom access is by a very steep stairway (probably could be described as a ladder) which was great for our teenagers but might be a challenge for some Downstairs also has a large and comfortable lounge, kitchen, bathroom, and a separate toilet accessed through the laundry. There's no drier which might be a problem if the weather isn't kind, but we found the clothes dried nicely outside in the sea breeze, and it gave another reason to go and hang out with that view The table outside on the deck got a lot of use from us. The kitchen is simple and old, but still encouraged us to cook at home. There's a full set of pots and pans etc if that urge strikes you too. The house is actually quite close to a railway line that had a few trains each day. None of us heard them from inside and it was only one morning I was on the deck I heard one or we'd have thought the track unused. When you back the car in it's easy to access your gear through the garage door, straight into the house. The location is pretty amazing. You overlook the main shopping strip of Kaikoura and it's under 10mins walk to get there via a path at the end of the street. Heaps of choices for cafes, a dairy, icecream, bars, the museum and of course the beach. The seal colony is just over an hour's walk if you're keen too.

We really couldn't fault it, though there was some concern from the boys that it doesn't have wifi if we were to return for a longer stay next time

taps terrible and leaky, dark dirty garage open in to house, dangerous power cords can t be compliant, kitchen not inspiring to cook in - ruff, no recycle bins, fly plague upstairs

Great location; enjoyed the garden and back yard areas. Some outdoor furniture would have been nice to have to sit out and enjoy the view. Lounge and dining areas comfortable as was the bed.

Some outdoor seating in back garden other than picnic table would be appreciated by guests. Although we did not use the upstairs bedrooms access by steep stairs would be a problem for many.

The view!

This property needs deck chairs and a shade umbrella for the large sunny deck! Impossible to use unless the sun went in. Nowhere to sit except a picnic table. Very frustrating.

A good place for a group to have a relaxed stay. Lots of room at a reasonable price. It's a classic old bach with a family feel. Everything was clean.

A lick of paint, some more kitchen stuff and bit more maintenance would have gone a long way towards making this place shine. There was some sort of leak in the toilet and not enough chairs in the dining room (and one less, after one of the chairs collapsed under my husband). Although everything's clean, parts of the house look a bit tired and shabby.

Lovely views and good location close to town.

The stairs to the other two bedrooms were very steep, difficult at night to use. Also, only 2 dining chairs for a house that sleeps 5, so we couldn’t all eat together.
