Great staff. Would have liked a little more choice for breakfast

The room was very small I thought it was the size of a large closet

Nice small boutique hotel in popular residential area. Close to many restaurants and points of interest.

The rooms in the main part of the building are pretty. Clean and nice bathrooms. Hotel is not on a busy street. In walking distance of nice restaurants and bars. Staff all friendly and accommodating to quests needs.

A little oasis of calm in the bustling centre of the new town in Quito

We spent 4 nights here. The staff were excellent and very helpful and friendly and the property, although old, was clean. At first we had a very spacious room but unfortunately we asked to be moved to another room because of noise such as air-con or pump or generator (?) throughout the night. But they moved us without a problem. Otherwise it was pretty quiet at night.
We also found the location to be a little inconvenient as we had to get taxis most of the time to go where we wanted. We had been told by a few people that walking around the streets at night was a bit dangerous, and as there weren’t restaurants close enough to walk to safely, taxis were the way to go.

I stayed at La Cartuja for a week, while on a business trip. La Cartuja started to feel like home. I talked to all the people that worked there, who would ask me how my day went.
My room was very large with 2 beds and a fake fireplace. The beds were well-made and comfy to sleep on. My room was right next to the lobby, which made it a little loud (buzzers and people in the hallway). The room could also be a little cold at night with the tile floors, so bring some socks and a sweater!
The big bummer was that the Internet didn't work that well in my room. That meant that I often used my phone to hotspot or call abroad.
Breakfast was decent with eggs (made fried/scrambled), toast, fruit, and some yogurt and granola. There was always fresh juice and coffee/tea.
The location was pretty good. The hotel's right next to the Ecuadorian national museum. It's a 15-20 minute walk from the heart of La Floresta and about 10-12 minutes from La Mariscal. The only thing is that it's not super safe to walk at night, so in the evening I primarily got around by taxi.
Overall, a great place to stay when looking for something a little low-key and homey.

Conveniently located but in a nice quiet spot with a lovely outlook. The only thing I can fault is that the hot water in the shower was tepid at best.

The staff are amazing and will go out of their way to support you. The room was clean and the shower had plenty of pressure and hot water. The location is close to a supermarket and restuarnts but ask for directions

THIS sleepy nice old style hotel, with a nice courtyard was not your typical hotel. 1st they are understaff, they are trying to save money. they have 1 cook who is also a waitress and house keeper. they have a owner who comes over maybe everyday with a baby , sits around and feeds baby and does not work, there are no male security guards at nite. not one. they dont even have cold beer or nice wine for sale. The word on the street is they are some kind of Christian Group with Gods money and running a hotel. I will never stay there again. any christians wanting to stay there well come on down and check in.

Conveniant area to stay. Friendly staff, but the female manager needs some training in customer relation skills. The rooms are tiny, and the rates too high because of that and for what you get.

Staff went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Helped us out after we were drenched in a Quito thunderstorm.

I had been awake and travelling for more than 24 hours when I arrived late at night. Once realising google maps wasn't quite accurate and it was a bit further along the road the reception staff greeted me nicely. He knew my name (on the booking I said I would arrive late) and was welcoming, he also spoke some English which is helpful. The room was exactly as in photos, very clean and cosy, the whole hotel was beautifully designed. I believe it used to be an embassy building so has a safe gate at the front. They were happy to store bags after you checkout so you can go site seeing (walkable distance) and helpful with maps and directions/bus routes. The breakfast was a bit minimalistic (eggs some toast a small plate of fruit and coffee tea and juice) probably the only downside.

Reasonably close to the tourist precint - a 10 minute walk or a cheap three minute taxi ride.
Rooms comfortable but a bit chilly.
Miguel and the staff were very helpful.
If you need a driver to get you to the sights, ask for Luis.
As this is basically a three star option it lacks the facilities we usually have a higher star hotels. However, for three stars this is pretty good!!!

The problem was bad wi fi, tv not working, breakfast minimum and I paid more than any hotel in ecuador. Room dated but clean, management friendly.

Lovely converted mansion with a courtyard in a convenient neighborhood. Overall clean with hot water but spotty wifi. TV screen was small and didn't immediately work (the onsite technician needed to be alerted). Breakfast was delicious. Service was excellent. Next to the foreign consulates.

What a wonderfully convenient neighborhood, close to the big museum and Casa Cultura (a must-do, free admission and really top-notch), and the park with art shows on weekends, three blocks from in-town artesan's market, and close the some of the bigger, more touristy-hotels if you need a "fix" in one of their bars. La Cartuja staff outstanding- friendly, kind, completely helpful with everything requested. The rooms just right for the price, and a comfy living-room/library style public area, not to mention the garden. We were only there for three days, and busy all the time, but when we come back Cartuja would be our first choice as a base for a longer visit to the region!

It is not an extravagant hotel but who needs luxury anyway.
For the price it is excellent, so is the location and the staff.
Highly recommended.

I was very pleased that the staff spoke English, as I don't speak Spanish. They sent a driver to pick me up from the airport on my arrival and arranged for him to take me back to the airport for my departure. I was especially pleased to be able to check in right away (at 9am) instead of having to wait until later in the afternoon, which allowed me to sleep off my jet lag. Breakfasts were not fancy but delicious, plenty of hot water for a shower. One staff member gave me a map of Quito and some suggestions on things to do (and how to get there) and places to eat. My only complaint might be the street noise (including occasional sirens) I heard even though I had the room upstairs facing the courtyard. But for my 2-day stay, this was a great choice.

This hotel is nice and rooms are clean. Staff are somewhat friendly depending on who you are dealing with. I was looking for a laundry and asked the lady at the reception desk her response was 'we don't do laundry service you must go outside the hotel' I said i understood and could she recommend one she responded saying 'just walk outside the hotel and you will find one somewhere'. That was disappointing although later that evening I asked the gentlemen at the reception desk and he gave me a recommendation and an address.
My other problem was late check out. Even for 2 hours extra they will charge you 50% of a one night stay. Disappointed.
I probably wouldn't stay her again myself as I think you can find better bang for your buck as well as better service elsewhere.

For the price, it's clean, safe, good location, near McDonald's for late night snack, $3 taxi to old town, near market.
Complete breakfast, good, pleasant service.

We had a lovely stay at this very nice hotel. It was within walking distance of the Old Town, and very close to the National Museum. The decor was charming, and the staff was extremely helpful in terms of telling us where to get various items of interest and suggestions of where to go. The "continental" breakfast was basically a full breakfast with eggs, toast, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. Free Wifi too. The room was quiet and clean. We booked this based on good value for the money and on reviews from other Expedia members--great choice!

Hotel La Cartuja is a wonderful place to stay!!! The hotel has beautiful architecture and wonderful, helpful staff. They served an amazing breakfast, and were always willing to help with calling taxis, general city information, etc. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The hotel is located on the edge of La Mariscal, about a five-minute taxi ride from the center of La Mariscal, but I preferred this location to being in the "heart" of La Mariscal, and felt very safe.

Two nights spent here either side of a tour. I was impressed with hotel factoring in the location, customer service and price. It may not be the most bling hotel but it has charm and character...
4.1
As far as hostels are concerned, the hotel itself was quite good (opposed to a regular hotel), good room (no central heating for cool Lima), clean, good beds, secure, good "included breakfast," etc. However, it was the most expensive of all of the hostels we used. In fact we discovered a suite hotel a stone's throw away offering more for less money so we were bummed out about what we paid.
The location is problematic: far from the historic downtown and not close enough to the tourist district which still requires a 20 minute walk.
On the positive side re location, the hostel is a 5 minute walk to the giant Casa de la Cultura national museum worth a visit as well as an artisan market, and if you're into American styled fast food (we were not) there's a McDonalds and a KFC a couple blocks away though we enjoyed some excellent meals at the Hilton Colon also nearby.
