The cottage was perfect! Everything we wanted to experience and enjoy on Sprucehead Island!
4.0 / 5.0
Almost everything about the cottage was outstanding: view, privacy, peacefulness, cleanliness, furnishings for kitchen, WiFi, outdoor accessories…super.
Two details are overlooked in the description. First, though modern, with decent hot water, the bathroom is tiny, hard to move around in or shut door without bumping into something. Shower stall itself also quite small.
Second, the upstairs sleeping area is built for decidedly shorter folks, I’m 6’4” and had a clear disadvantage. My partner, much shorter still suffered. The stairs are steep and tall folks must duck (both clearly advertised). Going downstairs was uniquely more hazardous, owing to a very close/steep roof over stairwell, especially the top 3-4 steps. What is not highlighted is the low ceiling and its sloping pitch in the entire upstairs bedroom. I could not stand straight up in the middle of the room, and on the twin bed side of the room the ceiling was so low as to make using them difficult. On the double bed side (with the windows) the roof sloped less but was still only about 5’ at the headboard. All in all, too cramped and tight for us. This may not be bad, but should be better highlighted in the description.

Our 4th year visiting the cottage. Very simple but all we need. Peaceful porch where we spent hours watching great blue herons and osprey (no bald eagles this year). Cove is perfect for exploring crabs, launching a kayak or SUP. We love being walking distance to McLoon’s for lobster every day and Giffords ice cream. Rainy weather this year so we played lots of “The Game of Life” and doing puzzles. Host Mike is quick to respond and makes the process very easy. Thanks for another great stay!

A real vacation cottage, not a city condo on the shore! Comfortable, clean and perfectly located. This was our second stay.

This is our third year staying at Mike’s cottage “Heaven Scent” and we’ve already booked next year. The cottage is “Maine rustic” but all that we need with a darling porch for perfect Maine sunrises. Walking distance to the greatest lobsters/lobster rolls and Gifford’s ice cream. The cove is perfect for tweens exploring for sea critters, fishing, and for watching the blue heron feasting, and osprey fly-overs. The construction noise from building the house next door was annoying but should hopefully be done by next summer. It’s just enough space for me, my sister, and my 13-yo son (if she ducks her head to walk upstairs). Be aware the bathroom is on the first floor if that matters to you in the middle of the night.

Cute house, however extremely damp, had issue for first two days with dozens of mosquitoes inside lots of bites on kids and myself. Also had a lot of mold in places. Uncomfortable beds and lack of bedding/pillows.
Neighbors dogs were in the yard often and even messed in the front yard.

This place is a great place to stay in mid-coast Maine. It’s close enough to amenities but far enough away to feel relaxing. Communication with Michael was great.

Our young family thoroughly enjoyed our week at the cottage. Even with the coastal haze, it was a perfect experience for all!

Beautiful area. Quaint cottage for my husband and I. Nice beach to go out kayaking and beach comb for shells. Loved watching sail boats and lobster boats come in and out of the cove.

My husband, 4 year old son, and I stayed for a week in this cozy home. The pictures and property description were very accurate and Michael was quick to answer any and all of my questions.
The home was just right for the 3 of us. There is only 1 bedroom, but we were happy to share for the week. The stairs leading to the bedroom are a bit steep with low ceilings, so anyone with mobility concerns should be aware. The bathroom is tight and can feel a bit damp without a fan, but useable for the week. We never had any issues with water pressure even when we took back-to-back showers. The kitchen was well stocked and we were able to cook a nice dinner one night and grilled another (we ate out a lot!). You can tell the property is on the older side, but we found it very clean and comfortable.
The real star of the property is the cove. The ocean is steps away and we loved walking out at low tide and kayaking out during high tide. There are only a few neighbors who were all absent or very quiet while we were there. It was very private without feeling spooky.
There is a Super Walmart about 15 minutes away and plenty of shopping and restaurants in nearby Rockland, Rockport, Thomaston, and Camden.
I would definitely recommend this property!

We had a wonderful stay
Beautiful weather even in October!
Cabin was warm and comfortable even on chilly nights

We loved it, can’t beat the location and viewing the inlet as the sun comes up. Not far from lighthouses and lobsters. Only issue is the roof is a bit low upstairs, even for us both less than 6feet tall. But if you want the full Maine experience this is a terrific spot.

The location was ideal. Tucked away quietly from US-1, but close enough to take advantage of the local restaurants and brew pubs. Camden and Belfast were an easy drive. The views from the property are spectacular and we had all we needed for a relaxing stay. My wife and I are boaters and Spruce Head Marina was a convenient bonus to our stay. Would definitely return if just the wife and myself.

Clean, comfortable cottage. Loved looking at the water whether eating inside or on the deck. Nice to have an easy to use and effective heater for the chills of September! Planning to return next year.

This was the retreat we needed. The cottage is small and has its quirks, but the location, view and peaceful environment made up for it. The property is located next to quite a few houses on the cove, but all the neighbors were respectful and quiet.

We loved the view and access to the sea, and we enjoyed the porch. The stairs to the sleeping quarters are a bit much for old folks like us, but the bed was comfy. Too bad the well started to go dry and we had to move elsewhere in our last week!

Million Dollar view!
What a great little cottage - perfect for my husband and I to relax and unwind for a week. We had stayed in the area about 10 years ago so knew we wanted to be on Spruce Head. This location is quintessential Maine (and I'm a native Mainer) - just watching the tide come and go while sipping my coffee or a glass of wine was the best way to spend time. The cottage had everything we needed - we enjoyed the firepit and the deck, kitchen had everything you would need, bathroom while small was no problem, loved the upstairs bedroom with the cooling ocean breezes and the area was very quiet even though there were neighbors. We walked to Mcloon's for lobster and had a spectacular dinner at Primo. I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants to experience Maine!

A taste of paradise!
The whole area is breathtaking! Absolutely beautiful- grass yard - ocean front what more could you ask for! Cottage while may not have all the modern conveniences was still lovely and suited us fine. So peaceful-definitely would recommend to anyone who would like a little rest.

Relaxing cottage on Harbor Lane
The cottage is cute built in the 1940s. The view is beautiful of the cove / ocean. Fun watching the wildlife. Bring binoculars! Has a nice fireplace overlooking the water. Lobster shack down the road. Lots to do in the area. It was very peaceful! Mike the owner was helpful and easy to communicate with.

Quiet solitude
We had a wonderful, quiet and relaxing stay at Heaven's Scent. Had everything we needed. The location was perfect for exploring the coast- close enough to town yet far enough away for peace and quiet. We hope to return again!

The huge possibilities of Maine, in a cozy package
My wife, seven year old daughter and I came to this Spruce Head cabin with high hopes, and we were not disappointed in the slightest.
The property was clean and fresh the moment we got there and the property had just about everything you could need for the stay. But without a doubt the best part was the view. There is a small cove where some of the local fishing fleet stay and the surrounding area of rocks, shells and unique tides makes it great for a young child who likes to explore. (Bring rain boots or water boots!)
And if by chance it rains - there were plenty of board games and locations in the place to sit down and read a book while listening and watching the rain. Speaking of that we saw Loons, Turkeys, an Osprey and plenty more. Make sure to bring binoculars - we're glad we did because there was always something to see.
Also the towns of Rockland and Camden are only a 15 minute and 30 minute drive respectively - but you won't notice the time as there is just too much to see along the way.
If you want the big feel of Maine, in a small package - this is clearly the place for you. Thank you again Mike & family. We loved our stay and will certainly be looking to come back again!

Quaint cottage on the ocean
Perfect place for a family getaway, great views, feels secluded, great lobster shack a 10 minute walk away, cute towns nearby (Camden, Rockland and Boothbay Harbor). We rented a canoe for 5 days and had lots of fun exploring the cove and beyond. We also used the grill and fire pit most nights and made s'mores.

Avery cozy place to relax and enjoy what the coast can be
We had a lovely stay there. The view onto lobster Cove it is very serene. And we got to watch the great blue heron‘s fishing and the young ducklings coming into the Cove to feed. The Adirondack chairs are light and are easily taken down to sit on the ledge to read a good book. The owners are very charming and very responsive anytime we contacted them!

The cottage was perfect for our vacation. You could not ask for a nicer spot, right on the cove. We had quiet, bird watching, back yard kayak launching, lovely views. The neighborhood is quiet yet friendly. The location is handy to what mid-coast has to offer but still has that get away feeling. I have been coming to this area either renting or visiting family for decades and never tire of Spruce Head and its environs. The cottage met the needs for three adults very well - clean, comfortable (ocean breezes made for sound sleeping), kitchen adequately provisioned, and with reliable wifi. The staircase height did not trouble us, we just paid attention when using it. Every place has its quirks and this is the kind of thing that adds charm and uniqueness. By far and away preferable to a box motel!I will finish by saying that Mike was amazingly responsive to whatever question or comment we had.

Relaxation!
What a beautiful spot on Spruce Head Island! Close to everything and well appointed, a great little place on a very quiet cove. Cozy and comfortable and plenty to keep you busy in the cottage and nearby. Great for small children, low tide presents lots of exploring and deep enough to swim. Lovely spot on the Maine coast!

Perfect for our little family
We had an absolutely wonderful time @ Spruce Head! The cabin was clean, well maintained, and well-stocked. Our 3 year old loved the selection of children's books and the info about shells and wildlife, and we all slept well in our beds. The location on Sprucehead Island was quiet and completely beautiful in its own right, and was also a great mid point for exploring up and down the coast.

Our stay in Spruce Head
We could not have chosen a better place to stay. The cottage was nothing short of amazing and so down to earth. The views and nature was so beautiful to experience. We loved the serene feeling of seclusion at the house and the solace we felt staying on the island. The beach area in front of the house was perfect to walk along and spot shells or sit along the rocks and enjoy the outdoors. Communication with the owners was great, location was excellent, and the house was very accessible and convenient. We loved building a fire in the cool evenings with the sunset in view and enjoying coffee and breakfast on the porch while the sun came up. We thoroughly enjoyed the down home feeling of the neighborhood and being able to drive down to McLoon’s for amazing seafood and ice-cream. This was a top notch experience!

My wife and I have rented all over Maine for many years so we knew the area quite well and were looking for a quiet, comfortable place on the water. We rented for two weeks. The cottage was very clean when we arrived and Mike is great about getting back to you with questions. The location is on a cove with nice views and very good kayaking. The fire pit is wonderful and the wild life is exceptional. Being only two people the cottage was comfortable in terms of space. If there was a third adult or teen ager or 2 other people it would be very cramped, especially if you had to use the futon which would take up a large part of the living area and would have to be opened and closed up each day. Our main and ONLY significant issue with the cottage is the bedroom with a queen bed upstairs in a converted attic like space with a VERY low ceiling. The stairs up and down, from the bedroom are unusually steep and the first step leading to the staircase on the ground level is also very high to step up and down from . We are Sr. citizens in good shape, kayaked every day. I am 5ft. 11" an my wife is 5ft. 8" . We also owned a cottage on a lake in Maine for many years so we are used to making do and roughing it - up to a point. Walking up and down the stairs is challenging given the very low ceiling height at the top and bottom of the stairs. I and my wife hit our head multiple times. We get up to go to the bathroom once or twice a night and navigating the stairs when you just get up can be difficult even though there is a night lights on the first floor. This issue alone has eliminated us from returning. Others may be able to manage the climb up and down better. The only other comment is the kitchen lacks one good frying pan or sauce pan to cook. The frying pans are old and with teflon mostly worn off- which is not safe. We went out and purchased a frying pan to use during our stay. The sauce pan had electric tape wrapped on the handle which is also not safe. Buying a few pots and pans would help a lot, especially if you are renters that like to cook a lot, which we do. Having said all this some may not be bothered by the above but I felt obliged to mention it for future renters which is the main purpose of giving a review.
