About this cottage rental

Pedro Herrera Casita, Est. 1857 The premier historic rental property in Tubac, this charming territorial-style adobe casita, built in 1857, was home to the village’s first postmaster, Pedro Herrera. Unfortunately, Pedro and the rest of the residents were forced to flee the town for Tucson in 1861, due to repeated raids by Cochise's Apaches out of the nearby Santa Rita Mountains. The first postmaster never returned to Tubac. Today, the Pedro Herrera Casita has been lovingly restored and updated by the current owner, an internationally known novelist. It offers a comfortable, romantic retreat with all the modern conveniences, including central heat/air conditioning, and evaporative cooler, Roku streaming service, and wireless internet connection. A complimentary signed copy of one the owner's novels is offered to renters upon check-in. Set on a terraced and beautifully landscaped half-acre lot, shared by the owner’s residence, the casita is shaded by old-growth deciduous and fruit trees and is only minutes from the Santa Cruz river and the Anza Trail, offering wonderful walking, hiking, biking, and birding through magnificent old-growth cottonwood and mesquite forests. Less a desert landscape than it is a riparian one, the area is a favorite vacation destination for birders who come to see the incredible diversity and fecundity of both resident and migratory species. The 750-sq. foot casita is furnished in Colonial-style antique furniture, and includes one bedroom/one bath; a queen sleeper sofa; fully-equipped kitchen; separate laundry room with washer/dryer and utility sink; brick patio with gas grill and umbrella-shaded dining table. Although only steps from Tubac’s lively shopping streets, the Pedro Herrera Casita is its own private enclave, offering our guests tranquility and serenity in an Old World atmosphere. We loved our time at the casita in Tubac - everything was very clean and well laid out for a comfortable, relaxing vacation. The host was kind and met us promptly when we arrived, and we couldn't imagine staying anywhere else in Tubac.

Great little historical casita in a wonderful location in Tubac. It had everything you would need and beautiful little oasis in the back to sit and enjoy some fresh air. The decor was cute as well and everything was very clean. Thank you.

If you enjoy staying at historic properties and are planning a trip to Tubac, I would highly recommend this property. The home is within walking distance to Tubac which is a plus. We loved everything about the property and Jim, the host, has thought of everything visitors might need for their stay. We enjoyed sitting on the covered front porch and the lovely side porch. And the inside of the home is comfortable and artistically decorated. The kitchen has absolutely everything you need, so on our next visit, we plan to cook more meals there. There is a water filtration system, so that was a big plus too. Although we didn’t use it, there is a lovely back patio with a grill for cooking outside too. The home has a washer and a dryer, something else that is a plus. The bed was comfortable and there were wardrobes and a dresser for clothes if you are staying longer (which we absolutely plan to do next time). There is air conditioning, but we only used the swamp cooler since it kept the home very comfortable. TV streaming had lots of choices and the sofa, desk, dining table and reading chair in the main room was very comfortable and functional. Jim, the host, is an author and enjoys making sure his guests have a wonderful experience! He made my husband’s birthday memorable and enjoyable. This was our best VRBO property yet and we are looking forward to staying again in the near future!
