About this house rental
A beautiful and historic stone house that has been lovingly renovated while retaining its authentic French style. It stands in the very best spot on the main square (along with the café/boulangerie/épicerie) in the picturesque Mediterranean fishing village of Bages, situated between vineyards, salt-water lagoons and sea. The house overlooks the village square and rooftops with views from every bedroom and from the roof terrace to the sparkling water of the Étang de Bages (lagoon) and the Mediterranean beyond. We fell in love with the French style and character of this house the very first time we saw it as well as the friendliness of the village and we are sure you will too; it is the perfect place to relax, switch off and enjoy a taste of the very best of France and French village life but also close to Narbonne, Perpignan, Collioure, Spain and Barcelona and a large choice of beaches plus every activity on land or on water.
The house is tucked away in the prettiest part of the village, peaceful and calm but with everything you need on the doorstep; watch the sun rise over the water from the terrace, then pop across the square for your morning baguette and stop by the café to enjoy a petit crème with your croissant. There is every activity close by; fantastic walking, beautiful cycle trails, sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking, rowing, fishing, bird watching (the region is famous for its bird life and flamingos), tennis, wine tasting, beaches, historic chateaux and cities – or just sit and enjoy the views and soak up the atmosphere of this friendly and authentic fishing village in the perfect climate of this part of the south of France.
Bages is that very rare thing, an unspoiled, authentic and picturesque Mediterranean fishing village in the Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie) situated between vineyards, lagoons and sea but that is utterly untouched by mass tourism and has managed to retain its traditional feel and way of life despite being just 15 minutes from Narbonne and on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Languedoc coast. One of the prettiest villages in the region, Bages dates from the 11th Century and is situated in the beautiful wine-growing area of Corbières, overlooking a vast lagoon, part of the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée natural park and home to flocks of pink flamingos and an extraordinary assortment of birds (350 species have been spotted here). There is still a small fishing industry here and the village is famous for eels, sold in nearby Narbonne and exported all over the world. It is an idyllic location in a wild, picturesque and lightly populated pocket of the otherwise crowded Mediterranean French coast and with over 300 days sunshine a year and temperatures constantly above 30o for four months every summer. (N.B Bages, our village has the postcode 11100 and is in the Aude – do not confuse with Bages in the Pyrenees Orientales, postcode 66670, which is further south and inland.)
The landscape all around is a spectacular mix of salt water lakes, sea, mountains, islands, lagoons, flora and fauna and vineyards covering 12,000 hectares of protected natural park. This provides a unique landscape and offers a wealth of outdoor activities for holidaymakers. You can walk around parts of the 75km Gulf Path, cycle along the numerous cycle paths, swim, sail, kayak, windsurf, kite surf, fish, row to the islands, spot flamingoes, herons, cormorants, storks, visit local vineyards for a wine tasting or just sit on the terrace and enjoy the views and the peace. It is the perfect place to stop, switch off, relax and re-connect.
The village itself sits in a protected rocky outcrop with spectacular views over the water; an utterly peaceful oasis of calm. In the village, everything you need is close at hand; there are two restaurants plus a third restaurant/café/epicierie/ with organic fruit and vegetables, fresh bread and general supplies. Thanks to its picturesque setting and charm, the village also attracts artists and there are a couple of lovely art galleries. A cycle ride away in Peyriac de Mer (6km) are more restaurants, a small supermarket, chemist and a choice of viticultures with wine tasting. The cycle tracks are spectacular and a great way to see the numerous birds on and around the lagoon. Across from Peyriac is the hidden beach of Doul and swimming here in the little Etang de Doul near Peyriac is an interesting experience as the water is 43% salt, similar to the Dead Sea. In Bages itself, you can rent out kayaks, dinghys or windsurfers at La Bateautheque and explore the lagoons or cycle around the water to the sailing club La Nautique where there are bigger boats, sailing and windsurfing lessons and another good restaurant. For something entirely different, just 15km to the south of Bages is the Sigean African Safari park with over 3,500 different animals and a great day out.
Location is everything and Bages has so much on its doorstep; national park, historic towns, glorious vineyards and immense stretches of sandy beaches. It also has eight major airports within easy reach (see details below) including one within half an hour and the motorway for every direction is just a 15-minute drive. The south’s most attractive cities are all within easy reach: Narbonne is just 15 minutes/10km, Carcassone 30 minutes, Perpignan 30 minutes, Montpellier under an hour, Beziers 25 minutes and Barcelona two and a half hours. In addition, Bages is 20-25 km from all the famous golden beaches of the Languedoc; Narbonne-Plage, Gruissan and La Franqui and just an hour south is Collioure for an easy day trip (take the train from Narbonne to avoid the summer traffic and parking problems) with the Spanish border just beyond. So, if you’re looking for just the right blend of relaxed French village life mixed with Mediterranean beach holiday, a smattering of history, local flavour, wonderful food and wines, a friendly welcome and easy access across the south of France, Bages is the perfect place.
The closest city, Narbonne, is just 10km from Bages and is a vibrant and historic Roman city, an architectural gem. The historic centre concentrates on either side of the banks of the Canal de la Robine which links to the Canal du Midi, with a majestic pedestrianized, tree-lined avenue surrounded by quintessentially French buildings leading to the impressive cathedral of Saint-Just and the Archbishop’s Palace. All around are historic, narrow lanes of shops and cafés, bars and pretty squares of the old town. The town also has a distinctly Spanish vibe and an exceptional covered market, ‘Les Halles’ which sells fresh produce directly supplied by fishermen and local farmers. Anyone who visits Narbonne will not fail to be impressed by its sheer architectural elegance, its wonderfully cosmopolitan atmosphere, and its numerous cultural, gastronomic and historic offerings.
This is our second home with all the usual home comforts and we hope that we have thought of everything so that you can really relax. Downstairs, steps lead up to the front door and you come into a cosy sitting room with comfortable sofa, plenty of books and games and TV/DVD/Wifi/ipod dock. From here it is a step up into the large open-plan kitchen and dining room filled with light from the huge windows overlooking the village square. There is a large dining table seating 8 easily and the modern kitchen is very well equipped with a large American style double fridge/freezer, an induction hob, dishwasher, coffee maker, plenty of pots and pans and crockery and cutlery for at least 8 people. There is a separate back entrance into the kitchen from the little lane behind which is perfect for unloading the shopping and there is a small table and a couple of chairs here for another choice of sitting area. There is also an open fireplace in the kitchen, lots of storage and a separate wc.
Upstairs, on the first floor, is the master bedroom with double height windows that open to the south with views over the square and the lagoon behind. The room has a large king size bed which can be made into two single beds as required. This room manages to be cool in summer and cosy in winter. There is a large closet area with its own sink. There is a second double bedroom with two sets of windows facing east over the square and views of the lagoon plus a large wardrobe/storage area. Across the hall is a very large, family bathroom with sink, bath and Italian shower plus there is a utility area with washing machine.
Upstairs again, on the top floor, is a further double bedroom with king size bed (can be made into two singles) facing south with beautiful views of the village, the lagoon and the surrounding landscape. Next door is a shower room with wc and sink.
Also on this floor is our favourite room; the sunny top sitting room with sliding French doors onto the terrace and spectacular views of the lagoons and the sea beyond. It is the perfect place to enjoy an early morning cup of tea, watching the sun rise over the water or a relaxed breakfast as the village wakes up below. Perfect too for an evening aperitif or just a heavenly place to sit and admire the ever-changing, panoramic view of the fishermen at work on the water, the sailing boats, the windsurfers the famous flamingos and birdlife of the region and French village life. Out of the end window, you may even spot snow-covered Canigou in the far distance.

We had a wonderful time here. This is a delightful home oozing French character and charm, and you immediately feel immersed as a local in sleepy little Bages. Being right on the village square is a treat - pop across for croissants and coffee in the morning, a cold drink in the afternoon, and then a choice of the handful of restaurants in the evening. Also the centre of Narbonne is a short drive away with it's marvellous food market and plenty of boutique shops & restaurants. Nadia was efficient with communication and made the experience seamless. Definitely highly recommend!

This well equiped property, is very much at the Centre of Bages. And lives up to it reputation. We had two lovely weeks here, and spent, much time on the roof terrace. The Etang is fabulous, with much wildlife, walks and the swimming in the salty waters a delight.
We played Petanque by the water. and the closeness to the Super city of Narbonne was a joy. Much to Like here

Family of 4 stayed here with two young children and we were very pleased. The unit was well stocked, clean, secure, and the patio on the top floor was the perfect place to relax at the end of the day. Bages is a lovely town, we were visiting before the high summer season (we were there in June) so the town itself was quiet and restaurants weren't open during our days there. But it served as a great home base to explore the area, including day trips to Narbonne, Beziers, and down the coast to explore some beaches. Would recommend this property.

The property exceeded our expectations upon arrival! The top floor terrace and room off of it were the perfect setting for a morning coffee and our afternoon wine. The view was second to none. We enjoyed the tranquility of the area and the feeling of not being rushed! As someone who likes to cook, the kitchen was well stocked with everything I needed! The space was fantastic for the whole family - kids had their space to unwind as did us parents (bonus!!).
An easy starting point for day trips to the beach and oysters as well as a drive to Carcassonne.
We would stay again if we are ever in the area, so great! Thank you Nadia and Mark for the welcome rose, it was a lovely treat upon arrival!

We enjoyed our stay very much. Loved the outdoor space. Very spacious with all the required amenities. Lots of space for a group of four. It was a very convenient location for us to tour around the area. Very relaxing place to come visit.

We selected this apartment in Bages to relax for a few days after sending home 4 friends with whom we’d been traveling for 2 weeks. We wanted to explore the Roussilon area and it’s wines before heading home. The apartment was perfect for this. As it was October, 2 restaurants on the square were closed, but MC Burger’s hamburger was very good. We ate at Restaurant Le Portanel and had excellent meals. The location allowed us to visit several local wineries with really nice wines. The only negative is that when we looked at the description of the place before renting is that there was o mention that the apartment is on 3 floors! This caused some problem as my wife is going to have knee replacement surgery in 2 weeks! It was not easy for her to go up and down the narrow staircase from the kitchen-living room to the bedroom.

We had a great time in a great place. Bages is a beautiful little village and the house is situated on the best place there.
Everything we needed was there and in very good condition.
Thank you for a beautiful week, we would love to be there again.

Been back a week and we cannot stop thinking about No1 Place Juin. If you are lucky enough to secure a booking of this most wonderful location and accommodation with its surroundings you will not be disappointed, this is one of those experiences we dream about having and the hosts allow this to come true. It certainly exceeded our expectations.

Peaceful and Welcoming
If you are looking to slow down your pace of life and just relax, this is a gorgeous place to do so! The house is a great combination of old charm and modern conveniences. The owners have been very thoughtful with stocking the house with everything you may possibly need. There is plenty of space for multiple couples or families with kids. The terrace on the top level is pure joy and beauty. The village is lovely and lively. You can walk out the front door for drinks or a meal. You might hear music until 11:00 at night, but it is what makes the village vibrant. We hiked from town and also rented bikes from the nearby town of Peyriac de Mer. Both experiences were great - we even spotted the famous flamingos!
Nadia was so helpful, rebooking our stay twice as we waited for green lights with Covid. She checked in with us on arrival too. Good people!
We loved our stay in Bages! Great house, sweet town, peaceful area, and wonderful hosts! Enjoy!

Sehr empfehlenswert!!!

Glücklicher Aufenthalt in wunderbarem Haus

Pleasant vacations in the nice area out of the beaten tracks..
Totally randomly rented this location as did not have much time for the research and it was the first result appearing in the research. Nevertheless of the fact that location is rather far from the sea : Gruissan plage 30 min by car , Leucate plage 35-40 min by car we enjoyed it 100 proc. It made us discover something new, very cosy, local, original. Loved it. Just a small note to put wd40 on the doors of the bedrooms. Some locks on the bathrooms would be nice as well.

Empfehlenswert!

Amazing renovated character home in the best location in Bages..just steps down onto the small central plaza complete with a restaurant and epicierie from which we availed ourselves of fresh bread and croissants each morning.
Well appointed with modern appliances ( huge fridge, dishwasher) and more than ample dishes and cutlery.
Immaculate condition and pristine.
Huge bathroom on second floor with tub and shower.
All needs have been anticipated to facilitate a worry free stay.
Communication with owners and prompt responses to all questions and concerns was greatly appreciated and...in ENGLISH ...seamless.
We thoroughly enjoyed the large terrace on the top floor, with its sunny exposure until about 3 p.m. and the protection from the wind as well. A great place to enjoy the french wines.
Our favorite restaurant was located in Peyriac de Mer, ...10 minutes by car.
Would suggest making reservations....extremely busy place even in October.
Location near beautiful Narbonne is also a definite asset ...only 20 minutes to the lovely centre ville, train station and huge market, Les Halles.
Only “downside” is the necessity of utilizing a vehicle to experience this idyllic little piece of heaven ....and the outlying surroundings for day trips.
Thank you for sharing your home, Mark and Nadia,
Your explanations and descriptions were extremely accurate ...so ....absolutely no disappointments....just sheer joy and anticipation of a future stay.

A very special place
We loved being in this lovely village. The house, the view from the terrace, the birds, the friendly bric a brac wine bar, eating the freshest possible oysters under the shade of olive trees. The lagoon. We have already booked to come back next year.

We spent a wonderful holiday in this beautiful, spacious house, perfectly located on the square in Bages.
Lovely local restaurants and amenities.( car advisable) Perfect location for walking/ cycling and exploring Languedoc- Roussillon.
We walked most mornings to see the flamingoes and other bird life.
Special feature of house is the roof terrace overlooking the square and lagoon.
Highly recommended.

Wunderbare Zeit - wonderful time !
Dear Nadia,
dear Mark,
yesterday in the morning we had to leave your wonderful house in pittoresque Bages.
We spent three relaxing weeks there, and enjoyed the people in the village, the landscape, the wineries, the Katharer´castles , Abbaye Fontfroide and much more very much. In particular we have often and with pleasure bought food in Les halles, prepared it in your well-equipped kitchen and then ate it on the terrace. Oh, that view !
The weekly concerts at Place Juin were entertaining, and the party went on into the early morning every time. You just have to join in! Les Beaux Arts were closed, no one told us why, but Les Jardins de Bages was great and unique in its concept, épicerie, bar and restaurant.
We have eaten with friends for one time in Le Portanel, a real recommenation for those who like fish. We were also in Le Nautique, a great atmosphere and proper food. If we were in the village we had our evening apéro at Jérome the broccante and winebar owner, here we got to know most of the people of the village. Wine always connects !
After all, we often enjoyed riding the bikes to Peyriac, Plages de Doul, Chateau d´Ille, down at the Étang or up through the hills. Once we had a Bicycle tube in the hose, we replaced it after we bought a new one at Décathlon. The tours have always brought a lot of joy.
In everything, it was a wonderful time.
Kind regards,

This is a beautiful house in a friendly, quiet, traditional French village. It feels as though you are in the middle of nowhere but within a 10 minute drive you have any convenience you could possibly require on the outskirts of Narbonne.
The bedrooms are well appointed with comfy beds and beautiful linen. The kitchen has all you could need to cook interesting finds at Les Halles in Narbonne. The terrace looks out over beautiful views and the village square. Really lovely.
The Bagois people are friendly and welcoming, even when you’re inadvertently driving the wrong way up their one way street!
Highly recommended.

Great house but somewhat noisy spot
The property was a lovely traditional French house and very nicely furnished and equipped however it overlooked the main square of the village which supported a popular restaurant. This we were not told in the details until we got there which advised you might like to join in the music evening on Thursday and book table as it goes on till 11. This was the worst night with noise till 2 am! The general noise from the restaurant might be considered ok by some and the music concert welcomed as it was a friendly restaurant but we wanted peace and quiet on holiday and if we had known would not have booked. Two nights we also had someone in the other restaurant (currently closed) cleaning his furniture with ahouse pipe about 3 am. All in all we didn’t get much sleep in the week with only 2 quiet nights.

We spent two weeks in Bages. The house is wonderful with a unique charme. On the technical side, all worked very well. Our hosts were absolutely helpful and efficient.

Lovely house that lived up to expectations.
This is a really smart conversion of a very old house in the centre of the village. It’s next to two of the three village eating places, one of which doubles as a small grocery. We used all three. They’re very different but all have something to offer. We loved the house which is spacious and well equipped. There is a huge master bathroom and all three bedrooms have lots of storage space. The third floor lounge is large and there is a small open terrace which we used extensively. The cooking facilities are excellent and converted me to induction.
Parking in the village is restricted and you have to park a short walk from the house.
Narbonne is 10-15 minutes away. We used the splendid daily market at Les Halles for most food and there are several accessible hypermarkets. Narbonne is an interesting town with Roman and Medieval sites and the Canal Robine running through the middle and lots of good eating. We’ve been in the area many times and revisited various places by car and train from Narbonne. Bages itself is an old village with lots of lived in charm. The locality pleased us with the wildlife in the Etang and the visually striking walks.
However what we enjoyed most was having family members and friends staying for some of the time, entertaining them and traveling around the area. The house and its location were perfect for this. We all loved the place and were in a consistently self-congratulatory mood at having found it.
It was all helped by the friendly and informative efficiency of Nadia, the owner who could not have been more supportive. All in all it made for as successful a rental as we have had in forty years of holidaying and I’d recommend it unreservedly.

Beautiful house in a great location in the village.
We arrived in Bages 9pm Saturday night and managed to get a table at the smaller restaurant in the square - Les Beaux Arts ignored our requests to book a table by phone/facebook/email!!
The house is great, with everything you would need for a stay, including beach towels to borrow, all the kitchen essentials, DVDs and games, internet and above all - plenty of space. 3 great double bedrooms (2 with kingsize beds and one set up as a twin bed. 2 bathrooms, 3 toilets. The top floor "sun-room" is great too - it opens out onto a terrace which overlooks the square and has great views over the rooftops to the lagoon.
Bages itself is a quiet village - 3 restaurants with mixed opening days/times - a small shop within one of the restaurants - only a couple of galleries to spend your money at.
The speciality of the area is eels and you could go wild and have a full "eel-fest" at La Portanel reataurant with every course being eels in one form or another. We had lots of seafood, with the Dorado Royale my favourite (sea bream in other words), and if you can catch the fisherman down by the dock in Bages, then you can buy them fresh everyday but Sunday.
Just down the road (3 mile walk/drive) from Bages is Peyriac de Mer, where you can find a few shops and a Tapas bar and a restaurant.
Nearby beaches are of the wide open, flat sand variety, with Gruissan Plage the best of the bunch especially if you have kids as the water is shallow for quite a long way out.
We visited Narbonne (20 mins away), and enjoyed the food hall and the river. We went to Carcassonne (1 hour away) and loved the Old City, which for some strange reason is decorated in yellow stripes at the moment? We travelled down the coast towards Spain for an hour to get to Collioure which is a lovely little arty village around a fortified harbour.
We also went into the hills to visit the gorge town of Minerve, and walk up the gorge then moved onto La Grasse for ice-cream and drinks and a visit to the Vinegar shop - you can taste them all if that floats your boat?
We also enjoyed a trip to Fontfroid Abbey - beautiful wines and walks around the grounds.
We flew into Beziers airport which is the nearest to Bages and I nervously drove a brand new car through the Peages, numerous roundabouts and the narrow streets of Bages. I deserved the beer I had when we arrived!!!
You will love the house in the square in Bages, you will have to visit to see if you love Bages and the are too.
